In Successful Leaders of the Bible, the Bible's most exceptional leaders come alive in fictionalized form to help readers understand that the lessons God imparted in the Bible millennia ago are just as applicable today as they were then. For example, if David lived today and continued to chase after God, how might God help him rise to a position of great power just as he did eons ago? If Moses was alive, imagine how God might use him to advocate for others. These stories are perfect for those who want to better themselves and see biblical characters in a whole new light.

Book A History of the Bible

Download or read book A History of the Bible written by John Barton and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literary history of our most influential book of all time, by an Oxford scholar and Anglican priest In our culture, the Bible is monolithic: It is a collection of books that has been unchanged and unchallenged since the earliest days of the Christian church. The idea of the Bible as "Holy Scripture," a non-negotiable authority straight from God, has prevailed in Western society for some time. And while it provides a firm foundation for centuries of Christian teaching, it denies the depth, variety, and richness of this fascinating text. In A History of the Bible, John Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. Barton shows how the Bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for Jews and Christians alike, yet argues that it must be read in its historical context--from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries. It is a book full of narratives, laws, proverbs, prophecies, poems, and letters, each with their own character and origin stories. Barton explains how and by whom these disparate pieces were written, how they were canonized (and which ones weren't), and how they were assembled, disseminated, and interpreted around the world--and, importantly, to what effect. Ultimately, A History of the Bible argues that a thorough understanding of the history and context of its writing encourages religious communities to move away from the Bible's literal wording--which is impossible to determine--and focus instead on the broader meanings of scripture.

Book excerpt: Join author and minister David Murray as he introduces you to Jesus through the lens of the Old Testament. When you think of a son trudging uphill, carrying wood for his own sacrifice because his father has decided to give him up to death, what biblical event does this bring to mind? Is it Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22, or is it Christ's passion in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? The kinship between these two stories is deeper than mere coincidence, and the similarities don't end there. In fact, Murray argues that Christ isn't just present in the story of Abraham and Isaac--he's present on every page of the Old Testament. In Jesus on Every Page, Dr. Murray guides the reader down his own Road to Emmaus, describing how the Scriptures were opened to him, revealing Jesus from Genesis 1 all the way through Revelation 22. Dr. Murray shares his ten simple ways to seek and find Christ in the Old Testament, diving deep into: Christ's planet--discovering Jesus in the story of Creation Christ's people--discovering Jesus in the characters of the Old Testament Christ's promises--discovering Jesus in the covenants of the Old Testament Recognizing Jesus in the full breadth of scripture is important for every Christian. In this step-by-step guide to discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Dr. Murray provides a framework that will help you start practicing this wonderful way of enjoying Jesus throughout the Bible. Download or read book Bible Characters written by Alexander Whyte and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Whyte's classic biographies of Biblical characters are accurate and spiritually respectful - this volume begins with Adam and concludes with Achan. The author uses depictions and quotations from classical literature together with the Old Testament to describe each character of the Bible. His own professional experience as a minister working in Free Church of Scotland, and the theological study which underpinned his education, allow Whyte to maintain accurate and canonical depictions. The characters are chronologically arranged by their appearance, beginning with the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible and one rich with characters and their roles in mankind's early history. Individual chapters and verses from the Bible are explained with a finesse stemming from Whyte's longtime role as an educator. By the time this work was published in 1896, the author had decades of experience in education, recounting the lives of Biblical figures to parishioners and students of Christianity. Readers can thus expect a thorough and informative account of Old Testament characters, their deeds and place in the sequence of events.

From that first sentence of Genesis, the story of salvation unfolds in strange and wonderful mingling of the commonplace and the miraculous, the human and the transcendent. But if you were born after the baby boom, chances are the Bible seems more like an item of passing interest than a book of depth and meaning for the twenty-first century. Meet the Bible introduces you to the full, epic sweep of the Bible -- the characters, the places, the times, the stories, and the meanings of this Book of books -- and shows you that even the most obscure passage can hold relevance for your life once you understand what to look for. Award-winning writer Philip Yancey and author Brenda Quinn are your guides on this one-year reading tour of the Bible. Each day's reading includes Scripture, contemporary commentary, and questions for contemplation -- all designed to offer insight into how the passage fits into the overall story of the Bible, and how it can speak to your life today. Meet the Bible takes you through the twists and turns of the Bible's many narratives, the high points and the low points, the good characters and the bad, as well as the eternal thoughts and descriptions of God and his Son, Jesus Christ. Here are stories to remember, images of real people and circumstances closer to your own life than you've ever imagined. By the time you've finished the year's worth of reading, you'll have gained a panoramic view of the whole Bible and a firm understanding of its ideas and teachings. Book Leadership In the River

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Leadership In the River written by Chris Walsh and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In God we trust? It is a pertinent question answered by this book, for trust comes from believing something, and belief is another word for faith. The Bible says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, so the purpose of this book is twofold: To equip ministers to better understand the often brutal law of the jungle that the business world has become and to see Jesus as King of the Jungle, a mighty warrior who fights for our families, our businesses, and our churches. To further equip successful business owners in their growth in mature Christian leadership. I believe the greatest need in the world is seasoned Christian leaders, who honestly care about the people they lead and the impact they have on their communities and society as a whole. Yet, in many cases there has been a great disconnect between successful business leaders and the local churches they attend. There are legitimate reasons for this in many cases: I have met successful business-people that have honestly stated: "If I ran my company financially the way that they run this church, I would be bankrupt in 30 days Where does a Christian leader go for help? Are there relevant answers in the Scripture for real world challenges? To the pastor trying to effectively minister to the business community in their area, AND to the business owner honestly determined to make an eternal difference in their calling through their business, this book is written for them. The heart of this book came from an encounter the author had with his pastor in 2007. A wealthy businessman had come forward for prayer at a church service at Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, led by the legendary Billy Joe Daugherty. Pastor Billy Joe asked the author to join him in praying for this beleaguered businessman, and he looked the man in the eye and said: "Sir, why don't you join one of our small group Bible studies?" The leader looked Billy Joe in the eye and said: 'Billy Joe, you know I can't do that. I have money, and every time I give Christians access to my life, they treat me like a walking ATM, constantly looking for me to pay for their latest missions trip or outreach. I would rather stay home and watch a movie with my family' I interjected: '" Exactly! Seems that about every missionary in town drops by my office when they are in town looking for a donation, it would be good if there was a Bible study where leaders could actually study Gods Word for answers, without getting hit on for money." Then Billy Joe looked me in the eye and said: 'That's a great idea, why don't you start something'. So I did. With one of my business partners initially, we began to meet Tuesday mornings from 7:30-8:30AM at the local coffee shop, and in 2008, we met until the summer of 2021.We read the book together, "The Richest Man Who Ever Lived: King Solomon's Secrets to Success, Wealth, and Happiness' by Stephen K Scott. The gist of his book is this: find a group of 6-10 people who will commit to reading a chapter of Proverbs every day, and putting it into practice in their homes and businesses. Since there are 31 chapters of Proverbs, it puts you through this book every month, our weekly Bible studies were simple to schedule: .If that a particular Tuesday falls on the 15th of the month, we read Proverbs 15 that morning, each of us reading 2-3 verses, and at the end, each person shares what they got out of that particular reading, or anything else the Lord might put on their heart. Over that 12 year period, meeting weekly with leaders in both business and ministry, and reading the chapter of the day, and deliberately seeking God for wisdom.Prayer has been answered and God gave us a portion of His excellence, Holy Spirit-led leaders, fully grounded in the Word of God, are the greatest need of this generation.
