Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largely unknown except in a few law enforcement circles, Jelly Bryce was at the forefront of the conflict during America’s gangster era. As an Oklahoma State Game Ranger, Oklahoma City Police Detective, and FBI Agent for over 30 years, Bryce was the man responsible for creating the FBI’s first firearms training program, developing their concealed holster and their fast-draw techniques, and personally training hundreds of their agents. Hired by the FBI without any college, he was involved in 19 shootings in the line of duty and was electronically timed at two-fifths of a second to draw and fire accurately. It was said if a criminal blinked at Jelly Bryce, he died in darkness. If you ever wondered who the anonymous men with badges and guns were who really lived the lives depicted in the movies and on television, this is the story of one of those unique men.

Download or read book Birth of a Legend written by LtCol Leon E. Braxton USAF and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition for Army acquisition funding in the betrween wars depression years was fierce. The opposing camps of Fighter Supremacy versus Strategic Bombing played out at the Air Corps Tactical School (ACTS), at GHQ, before Congress and in the media. Military exercises pitted the Navy and the Air Corps in operations with real cloak and dagger background gambits, each trying to gain the upper hand. When leaders such as Benjamin Foulois, Billy Mitchell, and Frank Andrews eventually were able to foster a bomber competition to replace the Martin B-10, Boeing's four-engined Model 299 was a clear winner; but then it crashed at Dayton, and the Army opted for the Douglas B-18. Somehow, Frank Andrews had enough faith in his convictions and managed to have 13 Y1B-17s produced and sent to the 2nd Bombardment Group at Langley Field, VA. There Robert Olds and his three squadrons enthralled the country with long range goodwill flights, transcontinental speed runs with an obscure 1st Lt Curtis leMay navigating the way, and a thrilling movie "Test Pilot" starring Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy. Fortunately for the trials of WWII, these daring young men of the Army Air Corps put their careers on the line, and made the B-17 one of the iconic weapons of that conflict. This is the untold story of the aircraft development and the men who made it happen.

Book Legendary Locals of Pelham

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Pelham written by Diane Chubb and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its start as a farming community, Pelham has been a place for dreamers and visionaries. It has been home to NASA astronaut Richard Linnehan and current NASCAR host Meghan Lamontagne, who made her television debut winning Americas Funniest Home Videos. Pelham has many other residents who may not have reached for the stars but instead focused on making a great community. Harry Atwood ran Atwoods Store, which housed the post office until 1965. Aunt Molly served as librarian at the Pelham Public Library for more than 55 years. The Harris familys Pelham Inn has always welcomed visitors from all over the region. Originally a parade group, the Starlighters Drum & Bugle Corps was soon participating in world open competitions. Twins John and Charles Steck buzzed above the town from their plane but also performed search and rescue missions. Longtime resident Eleanor Burton remembers all her students, served on every committee, and still actively volunteers. These legendary locals are people who, in their own comical or poignant way, have shared their vision to create our community.
