Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of Allston-Brighton, individuals have dreamed, struggled, and created a remarkable piece of American culture. Legendary Locals of Allston-Brighton features people representing an amazing mix of talents and activities, sometimes with far-reaching effects. In response to a plea from George Washington to feed his army, father and son Jonathan Winship I and II created what became Allston-Brighton's thriving cattle industry that remained part of Allston-Brighton until the mid-20th century. David Stoia, the present-day owner of Boston Lock and Safe, succeeded his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather in the company, which can be traced back to Colonial times. Intriguing stories continue with Boston poet laureate Sam Cornish, owner of Sunset Grill and Tap Marc Kadish, owner of Caf Brazil Valter Vitorino, state representative Kevin Honan, award-winning documentary filmmaker Liane Brandon, owner of Mr. Music Sal Barone, artist Richard Salvucci, Olympic gold medalist Harold Connolly, and baseball great Ted Williams. These images and narratives of the legendary locals of Allston-Brighton represent a vibrant community of Boston.

Book Arthur Origins Identities and the Legendary History of Britain

Download or read book Arthur Origins Identities and the Legendary History of Britain written by Jean Blacker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoffrey of Monmouth’s immensely popular Latin prose Historia regum Britanniae (c. 1138), followed by French verse translations – Wace’s Roman de Brut (1155) and anonymous versions including the Royal Brut, the Munich, Harley, and Egerton Bruts (12th -14th c.), initiated Arthurian narratives of many genres throughout the ages, alongside Welsh, English, and other traditions. Arthur, Origins, Identities and the Legendary History of Britain addresses how Arthurian histories incorporating the British foundation myth responded to images of individual or collective identity and how those narratives contributed to those identities. What cultural, political or psychic needs did these Arthurian narratives meet and what might have been the origins of those needs? And how did each text contribute to a “larger picture” of Arthur, to the construction of a myth that still remains so compelling today?

Book The Legend of Veronica in Early Modern Art

Download or read book The Legend of Veronica in Early Modern Art written by Katherine T. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Legend of Veronica in Early Modern Art, Katherine T. Brown explores the lore of the apocryphal character of Veronica and the history of the “true image” relic as factors in the Franciscans’ placement of her character into the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) as the Sixth Station, in both Jerusalem and Western Europe, around the turn of the fifteenth century. Katherine T. Brown examines how the Franciscans adopted and adapted the legend of Veronica to meet their own evangelical goals by intervening in the fabric of Jerusalem to incorporate her narrative − which is not found in the Gospels − into an urban path constructed for pilgrims, as well as in similar participatory installations in churchyards and naves across Western Europe. This book proposes plausible reasons for the subsequent proliferation of works of art depicting Veronica, both within and independent of the Stations of the Cross, from the early fifteenth through the mid-seventeenth centuries. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, theology, and medieval and Renaissance studies.

Book Complete UK Hit Albums 1956 2005

Download or read book Complete UK Hit Albums 1956 2005 written by Graham Betts and published by HarperCollins (UK). This book was released on 2005 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most complete guide to every artist and album that has ever charted in the UK Album chart, with details on over 14,800 albums and biographies on every one of the 3,180 acts that have appeared since the chart first started in 1958. From a Top Ten in 1958, the album chart has grown in both size and stature over the years. Increased to a Top Twenty in 1960, the chart grew to a Top 30 by 1966, a Top 40 later that year, a Top 50 in 1971, a Top 75 in 1978 and a Top 100 in 1981. By 1989, when compilation albums and soundtracks were a major factor in the chart, a decision was taken to produce two charts; a Top 75 artist chart and a Top 20 compilation chart. Every single entry on all these charts is included in Collins Complete UK Hit Albums. 3,180 acts have registered just over 11,300 hit albums; also listed are the approximately 3,500 soundtracks and compilation albums that have also hit the charts. Hit Singles: a brief biography of each of the 3,180 or so artists who have had hit albums, details of BPI awards, Platinum Europe awards and RIAA Diamond awards and details of BRIT, Grammy awards and US Number Ones. Just as with the single chart, the album chart is not without its peculiarities and so you will learn of the album that took nearly four years to hit the number one spot, the album by Sigur Ros that had no title as opposed to that by Fiona Apple which registered the longest title (all 89 words), the artists whose chart career consists of a single week at position 100 as opposed to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours which has spent 477 weeks on the chart, including one week at number one.

Book Helena of Britain in Medieval Legend

Download or read book Helena of Britain in Medieval Legend written by Antonina Harbus and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2002 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Helena, mother of Constantine the Great and legendary finder of the True Cross, was appropriated in the middle ages as a British saint. The rise and persistence of this legend harnessed Helena's imperial and sacred status to portray her as a romance heroine, source of national pride, and a legitimising link to imperial Rome. This study is the first to examine the origins, development, political exploitation and decline of this legend, tracing its momentum and adaptive power from Anglo-Saxon England to the twentieth century. Using Latin, English, and Welsh texts, as well as church dedications and visual arts, the author examines the positive effect of the British legend on the cult of St Helena and the reasons for its wide appeal and durability in both secular and religious contexts. Two previously unpublished vitae of St Helena are included in the volume: a Middle English verse vita from the South English Legendary, and a Latin prose vita by the twelfth-century hagiographer, Jocelin of Furness. Antonina Harbus is Professor in the Department of English at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

Book Subject Matters

Download or read book Subject Matters written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we currently make of ‘the subject'? Under the sway of structuralism and poststructuralism, critical thinking took a distinctly negative turn, effectively disqualifying any form of subjectivity as a reference point in discussions of textual or literary meaning. Since the mid-1970s, however, throughout the human sciences, human agency has been restored as both a methodological principle and an ethical value: a phenomenon broadly designated as ‘the return of the subject'. Yet the returning subject bears the traces of its problematization... The present collection of essays explores the ways in which the subject now ‘matters', both in principle and in the variety of critical approaches in authorizes. Essays, which are both literary and theoretical in character, cover authors, texts and issues in French literature from Descartes to the present. A wide range of types of writing is examined, from established forms such as the novel to relatively marginal and generically unsystematized discursive practices such as automatic writing and the ‘récit de rêve'. Though it shuns ‘closure' in a matter which remains ultimately elusive, this book offers some account of the types of answer which remain open and of those we have learned to leave behind.

Book Transnational Business

Download or read book Transnational Business written by Galen Spencer Hull and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1999. Small Businesses Trickling Up in Central and Eastern Europe argues that micro-, small, and medium-sized enterprises in selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have been the key to economic growth rather than privatized large-scale enterprises. Small businesses have come to constitute the most dynamic element of growth in the emerging markets of the CEE region in the last decade. In 1989, most of the countries of the region were still under the political and economic domination of the Soviet Union. Since then a process of liberalization has been unleashed in the region to dismantle statist economic policies and replace them with free market policies. This has involved programs of privatization and restructuring of state-owned enterprises, as well as the promotion of policies to enable a private sector to develop. Small businesses are creating thousands of new jobs while large companies are retrenching and downsizing their workforce. In some countries of the region this process is much further along than in others. In each country, however, the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector has developed at a more rapid pace than has the privatization of the large public companies. The privatization of small and medium-sized state-owned enterprises has been rather more successful. With the economic transition there has been a flurry of new enterprises springing up throughout the region, some registered as legal entities but many micro-enterprises often remaining unregistered in the informal sector. Micro-enterprises are increasingly seen as an important element of this SME sector, although they were traditionally treated separately as belonging to the informal sector and a detriment to economic growth.
