Book Legal and Economic Basis for Performing Mining Activities in Southeast Europe

Download or read book Legal and Economic Basis for Performing Mining Activities in Southeast Europe written by Thomas Heise and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-11-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2009 in the subject Law - Civil / Private, Trade, Anti Trust Law, Business Law, , language: English, abstract: Mineral resources are essential for the existence and the development of our modern society. Metal resources are used for the production of a wide range of merchandise. Industrial minerals are broadly used for pharmaceuticals and chemical products. Energy is provided on a large scale by non-renewable mineral resources, such as coal. The European Union represents a territory of low mineral potential. Of course there are several exceptions, like Poland having a high production of copper. The European Union is not able to cover the needs of the industry from domestic deposits and is therefore highly dependent on imports. The mineral potential of Western Europe has been used on a very high scale because the mineral wealth was already known in ancient times, whereas the deposits in Southeast Europe have not been exploited on such an extended scale as in Western Europe. Both economic and legal situation of many Southeast European countries are not well known in the Western world. This fact is caused by the changing political situation during the last decades, the therewith connected underdeveloped mining industry and a high complexity of legal requirements. In 2007, Bulgaria and Romania became members of the European Union. They represent the first Southeast European countries being accepted into the European Union. Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey are considered candidate countries, all located in Southeastern Europe. The increasing importance of Southeast Europe for the enlargement of the European Union may upgrade the European economic situation and the mining sector, resulting in reduced import dependence. However, it is essential to upgrade the Southeast European mining industry, which should preferably be done by foreign companies already having experience in mining. Two parameters are essential for investments in the mining industry: the existence of mineral deposits and a consistent legal framework. This books deals with both issues. The aim is to give general and detailed information on the overall economic, mineral economic and legal situation in Southeast European countries as well as to evaluate and compare both issues. This book combines information and research data, which was collected for more than two years and forms the basis for a solid line of discussion as well as for horizontal and vertical integrated evaluation and comparison.

Book General and International Mineral Policy

Download or read book General and International Mineral Policy written by Günter Tiess and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for mineral resources (iron ore, cement, etc.) has increased substantially in recent years, a development which can be traced back to the economic growth of heavily populated newly industrializing countries. More than fifty percent of the total world population is now interested in the same resources. This change of structure has caused enormous price increases on international commodity markets. In Europe this process can also be noticed in shortages of some mineral resources. National mineral resources policies play a decisive role here, and developing special policies is vital to creating a mineral resources strategy and ensuring a competitive mining industry. This book discusses the mineral resources policies and strategies of important mineral resources importing and exporting countries, examines the status quo of European mineral resources policy and puts forward proposals for the implementation of such a policy for discussion.

Book The Law and Governance of Mining and Minerals

Download or read book The Law and Governance of Mining and Minerals written by Ana Elizabeth Bastida and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a disciplinary matrix for the study of the law and governance concerning mining and minerals from a global perspective. The book considers the key challenges of achieving the goals of Agenda 2030 and the transition to low-carbon circular economies. The perspective encompasses the multi-faceted and highly complex interaction of multiple fields of international law and policy, soft law and standards, domestic laws and regulations as well as local levels of ordering of social relations. What emerges is a largely neglected, unsystematised and under-theorised field of study which lies at the intersection of the global economy, environmental sustainability, human rights and social equity. But it also underlies the many loopholes to address at all levels, most notably at the local level – land and land holders, artisanal miners, ecosystems, local economies, local linkages and development. The book calls for a truly cosmopolitan academic discipline to be built and identifies challenges to do so. It also sets a research agenda for further studies in this fast-changing field.

Book Law and Regulation of Commercial Mining of Minerals in Outer Space

Download or read book Law and Regulation of Commercial Mining of Minerals in Outer Space written by Ricky Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph addresses the legal and policy issues relating to the commercial exploitation of natural resources in outer space. It begins by establishing the economic necessity and technical feasibility of space mining today, an estimate of the financial commitments required, followed by a risk analysis of a commercial mining venture in space, identifying the economic and legal risks. This leads to the recognition that the legal risks must be minimised to enable such projects to be financed. This is followed by a discussion of the principles of international space law, particularly dealing with state responsibility and international liability, as well as some of the issues arising from space mining activities. Much detail is devoted to the analysis of the content of the common heritage of mankind doctrine. The monograph then attempts to balance such interests in creating a legal and policy compromise to create a new regulatory regime.
