Book A Pragmatist and His Free Spirit

Download or read book A Pragmatist and His Free Spirit written by Susan Chan Egan and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pragmatist and His Free Spirit portrays the unconventional love between a Chinese social reformer and an American avantgarde artist. Hu Shi was a student at Cornell when he first met Edith Clifford Williams. They exchanged some 300 letters between 1914 and 1962; these, alongside Hu's diaries, poems and other correspondence, provide the substance of this book. In Williams, Hu met his intellectual match. She helped him reconcile his selfimage as an independent thinker with his acquiescence to an arranged marriage. Best known for his contribution to China's Literary Revolution, Hu's experimental vernacular poetry was partly inspired by his exposure to Williams's avantgarde art. In reconstructing their romance, the authors deftly exemplify the dilemmas which confronted a generation of Chinese intellectuals, particularly those educated in the West. Although Hu shared his contemporaries' patriotic hopes for China, he never subscribed to the prevailing ideology. Sustained by Williams's unflinching honesty, he advocated John Dewey's pragmatic approach, one which has recently regained acceptance in China. Although the romantic ardor dwindled, the two retained, in each other's eyes, an image of their idealistic youth.

Book Nietzsche s Free Spirit Philosophy

Download or read book Nietzsche s Free Spirit Philosophy written by Rebecca Bamford and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging and inspiring volume of essays explores Nietzsche's philosophy of the free spirit. Nietzsche begins to articulate his philosophy of the free spirit in 1878 and it results in his most congenial books, including Human, all too Human, Dawn (or Daybreak), and The Gay Science. It is one of the most neglected aspects of Nietzsche's corpus, yet crucially important to an understanding of his work. Written by leading Nietzsche scholars from Europe and North America, the essays in this book explore topics such as: the kind of freedom practiced by the free spirit; the free spirit's relation to truth; the play between laughter and seriousness in the free spirit period texts; integrity and the free spirit; health and the free spirit; the free spirit and cosmopolitanism; and the figure of the free spirit in Nietzsche's later writings. This book fills a significant gap in the available literature and will set the agenda for future research in Nietzsche Studies.

Book Free Spirit

Download or read book Free Spirit written by Thomas W. Gross and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Brunswick, New Jersey, stands as a memorial to one of Rutgers University’s most influential leaders. Gross started teaching at Rutgers as an assistant professor of philosophy in 1946, but quickly rose through the ranks to become the university’s provost in 1949 and finally its president from 1959 to 1971. He led the university through an era when it experienced both some of its greatest growth and most intense controversies. Free Spirit explores how Gross helped reshape Rutgers from a sleepy college into a world-renowned public research university. It also reveals how he steered the university through the tumult of the Red Scare, civil rights era, and the Vietnam War by taking principled stands in favor of both racial equality and academic freedom. This biography tells the story of how, from an early age, Gross came to believe in the importance of doing what was right, even when the backlash took a toll on his own health. Written by his youngest son Thomas, this book offers a uniquely well-rounded portrait of Gross as both a public figure and a private person. Covering everything from his service in World War II to his stints as a game-show personality, Free Spirit introduces the reader to a remarkable academic leader.

Book More Lives Than One The Extraordinary Life of Felix Dennis

Download or read book More Lives Than One The Extraordinary Life of Felix Dennis written by Fergus Byrne and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canny, infuriating, cynical and generous by turns, Felix Dennis was a true one-off. When he died in 2014 he was a multi-millionaire. Yet he spent his last months writing poetry and planting the millionth tree in his own forest in Warwickshire. Journalist Fergus Byrne got to know him well in this time and was granted exclusive access to Dennis's archives and papers. He found everything had been kept and, along with hours of interviews with girlfriends, family, staff and friends the world over, he has now written the only authorised biography of a man who described himself as lucky to have led several lives. His early rebellious days started with dropping out of grammar school, playing in a rock 'n' roll band, and being imprisoned (with Richard Neville and Jim Anderson) for charges of obscenity relating to a priapic Rupert Bear in the 'schoolkids' issue of the magazine Oz. The launch of Kung-Fu magazine, created when Dennis spotted a queue at a Leicester Square cinema for a Bruce Lee film, changed his fortunes. An industrious and self-destructive era then followed. He moved to America, added the magazines MacUser and Maxim to his portfolio, but also discovered crack, hookers and S & M. When his lifestyle led him to hospital, he gave up the drugs overnight and took to writing poetry. He acquired a mansion in Warwickshire, bought a much loved home in Mustique from rock star David Bowie, gave generously to charities, planted the largest broadleaf forest in Britain, and published several volumes of verse promoted by very well received readings nationwide. This is a hugely readable account of one of the most extraordinary characters of our time.

Download or read book Natural Expressions written by Andrea J. Parham-Shannon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Expressions "A Family Affair" truly reflect "Gods" favor on me. "Gods" hand is a hand of power and "He" has continued to keep me in "His" hands as I go forth in "His" name with Natural Expressions. Since Natural Expressions "Up Close and Personal", many changes in my life have come but, through Christ Jesus and His Angels "Grace and Mercy", I've been able to endure the challenges. As the elders would say "what don't kill us only makes us stronger" and boy ain't that the truth. "A Family Affair" is dedicated in memory of my husband Rudolph who passed away in September 2010. The memory of him enjoying my poetry will always be an inspiration. My favorite book of romance is the Bible's Old Testaments "Song of Solomon". God's love is powerful. "Look at God". Another collection, another blessing. Oh, I look to the hills and I defi nitely recognize where and whom my help comes from. Since Natural Expressions "Up Close and Personal" I've relocated to the hometown of my family in Warrenton, North Carolina, a drastic change from Washington, DC but, I welcome the change and the folks are wonderful. "A Family Affair" was inspired by everyday living, family, friends, church and romance. A chance fi nally to share my children's (April and Vernon) school days poetry. How surprised I was to fi nd a suitcase tucked away that contained much of my children's school work, pictures, and report cards and yes, poetry written by them. What an honor to share their expressions. As always, "To God be the glory". I pray that you have found one if not many poems in this collection to uplift and encourage you along your journey. If so, than our writings are not in vain. Peace and Blessings, Andrea J. Parham-Shannon
