Book From Counterculture to Cyberculture

Download or read book From Counterculture to Cyberculture written by Fred Turner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1960s, computers haunted the American popular imagination. Bleak tools of the cold war, they embodied the rigid organization and mechanical conformity that made the military-industrial complex possible. But by the 1990s—and the dawn of the Internet—computers started to represent a very different kind of world: a collaborative and digital utopia modeled on the communal ideals of the hippies who so vehemently rebelled against the cold war establishment in the first place. From Counterculture to Cyberculture is the first book to explore this extraordinary and ironic transformation. Fred Turner here traces the previously untold story of a highly influential group of San Francisco Bay–area entrepreneurs: Stewart Brand and the Whole Earth network. Between 1968 and 1998, via such familiar venues as the National Book Award–winning Whole Earth Catalog, the computer conferencing system known as WELL, and, ultimately, the launch of the wildly successful Wired magazine, Brand and his colleagues brokered a long-running collaboration between San Francisco flower power and the emerging technological hub of Silicon Valley. Thanks to their vision, counterculturalists and technologists alike joined together to reimagine computers as tools for personal liberation, the building of virtual and decidedly alternative communities, and the exploration of bold new social frontiers. Shedding new light on how our networked culture came to be, this fascinating book reminds us that the distance between the Grateful Dead and Google, between Ken Kesey and the computer itself, is not as great as we might think.

Book Legacy from the Stars

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are children of the stars. This is our legacy and our heritage. In the history of the cosmos, Earth is a young planet. Our souls, on the other hand, have been around forever and will continue to be around forever. Thus Earth is not our only home. We have lived many lives in unusual environments before deciding to journey here and learn the lessons of Earth. After our schooling is completed on this planet, we will journey onward to discover new worlds to explore. The memories of these soul journeys are recorded in our subconscious, and in Legacy from the Stars hynotherapist Dolores Cannon shows that they can be retrieved through regressive hypnosis. She reports dramatic cases where the subjects relived other lifetimes in strange environments -- inhabitants of other planets. After reading her latest book, you may agree that "we are all extraterrestrials," and Earth is merely a stop-over in our long adventure.

Book Beta Earth Legacy

  • Author : J.R. Napier
  • Publisher : CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2014-10-25
  • ISBN : 1494719428
  • Pages : 561 pages

Download or read book Beta Earth Legacy written by J.R. Napier and published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-10-25 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our heroes from - Beta Earth: Between Worlds return. The now legendary status Clave. The stronghearted Lana. The ever vigilant Vin. The young prodigy Anul. The increasingly ambitious Gaidon. The hopelessly desperate Abel and the alloy enhanced enigma Kamon. All of them now older and more skilled. Will be put to the ultimate test as they are dragged into an ever growing war for Paradise. --KIRKUS REVIEW-- The search for Paradise, which people believe will be the only place to survive the fated collision between two inhabited planets, leads to endless battles in Napier’s (Beta Earth: Between Worlds 2.0 Edition, 2014, etc.) latest sci-fi outing. This collection comprises three stories, each drastically shorter than the last. In the first, “Awakening,” Theia, or Beta Earth, initially the “second chance” planet, has fallen prey to crimes and criminals that plague the original Earth. The new utopia is Paradise, which proves elusive. Factions such as the United Federation, a global military force, and Final Bloodline, a cult, are hunting members of Project Guardian. The members, free of “limiters” (which block people’s true potential for power), are more susceptible as vessels for Tryle, a dormant “messenger” who will lead the way to Paradise. Mercenary Clave tries to protect Raph, who survived a UF attack on Beta Earth, from succumbing to Tryle while dodging bounty hunter Gene, who’s out for revenge. “Awakening” is sometimes disjointed, coming across as a series of smaller battles with little story progression. There likewise isn’t resolution by the end, which feels like the conclusion of a chapter rather than a story. The sometimes lethal clashes, though, are entertaining, resembling Dungeons & Dragons games; those in confrontations, generally one-on-one, will often “score” a hit or blow. The second story, “System Failure,” is more focused, zeroing in on Montello (a small but notable character in “Awakening”), who helps hackers work remotely. He recruits them for an assault against the government and incurs the wrath and eventual retribution of Kid Vicious, whom Montello embarrassed during a display of skills. The exhilarating “System Failure” features numerous references to earlier characters. The much shorter final yarn, “A Boy and His Cat,” spotlights Travis, a significant character in a prior story (under another name), who endures a tragic event that ultimately leads to his powerful status later in life. Disjointed storylines don’t diminish Napier’s endearing and contagious adoration of the sci-fi genre. ---- The book is not your average read. If I may use a tree analogy. It's like reading different branches that form into a solid structure and dig to the roots. Be brave. Give it a chance and it will take you to the heights of euphoria. -JR Napier

Book excerpt: Colony Earth is Book 1 of the Alterran Legacy Series In ancient human history, an explosion of knowledge of agriculture, building, and steel weapons occurred suddenly, without explanation, and the human population prospered and grew into civilization. According to clay tablets found at ancient cities of Sumeria, the cities were founded by "those who came from the skies," who dwelt there and gave knowledge to the citizens. The tablets reveal that "those who came from the skies" had lived on Earth far longer than the age of Sumeria. The principal leaders of "those who came from the skies" were half-brothers Enlil and Enki, who reported to their father, Anu, who ruled on their home world. The beginning books of this series serve as a prequel to the decision of this race to take an active interest in managing the development of humankind, and imagines why an advanced, technological society could have been governed by a small ruling family, while weaving in ancient mythology and recent geological discoveries.
