Book excerpt: Contrary to our perception of the centrality of the churches in English life in the nineteenth century, the disappointing results of the 1851 Religious Census led religious leaders to seek a variety of ways to increase religious allegiance as the century progressed. The apparent apathy and lack of interest in formal religion on the part of the working classes was particularly galling, and the various denominations tried hard to attract them through evangelical missions as well as social and charitable ventures which sometimes competed with religious concerns, to the latter’s detriment. This book traces the motivations, concerns and efforts of the churches, particularly in the period between 1870 and 1920, and the ambivalent responses of ordinary people. The Education Act of 1870 led to the churches losing their hold on the education of the young, a consequence foreseen by many church leaders, but unable to be prevented. By 1920 it was apparent that the churches’ optimism regarding an increased role with a war-weary population would not be fulfilled. The focus is on the city of Leeds, representative of the industrialised urban areas with burgeoning populations which proved to be such a challenge to the churches, at the same time stimulating them to ever-greater efforts.

Book excerpt: Although Leeds State Bank opened in 1910, the small city's history as the primary population center of the Cahaba Valley started by 1810, when European woodsmen came through Tennessee to live along the Cahaba Trail with the Cherokee Indians. By 1821, Henry Little, a Scottish descendant, built his log home near an existing gristmill. In 1857, he rebuilt the mill as his version of the regionally famous Fuller's Mill. Early settlements consisted of Europeans and Cherokees who remembered the American Revolution and who fought in the War of 1812, which they believed was a second revolution. Free African Americans arrived in the 1880s with the building of the railroad, bringing added ingenuity. All founding groups were Americans who demonstrated their sense of community, value of education, and reverence for God as they began a Leeds heritage that includes three Medal of Honor recipients, as well as famous statesmen, scholars, athletes, entertainers, and builders.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the remarkable changes made to the built environment in Lancashire’s main textile district – essentially the eastern and central parts of the county – during the Industrial Revolution (c1780-c1850). A case-study approach is taken, with findings from investigations at six different types of site being presented. The sites included are water-powered mill remains in the Cheesden Valley, near Rochdale; Barrow Bridge factory village, near Bolton; the former handloom weavers’ colony at Club Houses, Horwich; Preston’s Winckley Square; Eanam Wharf at Blackburn; and, to the north of Bolton, the road between Bromley Cross and Edgworth. The case studies show how, in rural and urban areas alike, developments in industry, housing and transport greatly extended the built environment and brought striking new features to it. Emphasis is placed on interpreting the physical evidence the sites provide, linking it with that taken from various types of documentary source, especially historical maps. By making comparisons with developments occurring at similar types of site elsewhere in Britain, as well as in Europe and North America, the forms the changes took are explained and their significance assessed. Additionally, insights are provided into the economic and social impact the changes brought, especially on the everyday lives that people led.
