Book The Leeds Liverpool Canal

Download or read book The Leeds Liverpool Canal written by Mike Clarke and published by Spotlight Poets. This book was released on 1990 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magnificent, illustrated history and guide of Britain's longest and arguably most important canal. Mike Clarke lived on the canal for 5 years, and his knowledge and in-depth understanding of the subject have led him to produce a wonderful book. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is England's longest and arguably most successful canal. Originally conceived as a way for Bradford merchants to reach the rapidly expanding port of Liverpool, it was begun in 1770 from both ends simultaneously, and was finally completed only in 1816. The canal runs through or near some of the most significant industrial towns of the North - Liverpool, Wigan, Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Bradford and Leeds - and for many years carried a large proportion of the goods that fuelled the industrial development of the entire region.

Book Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Yorkshire

Download or read book Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Yorkshire written by and published by Archive Photographs: Images of England. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Leeds & Liverpool is the longest single canal in Britain and arguably one of the most successful. From its completion in 1774 to the last commercial delivery, it served for nearly two hundred years as a main artery of trade across northern England, meeting the industrial and commercial needs of Lancashire and Yorkshire much as the M62 motorway does today. It offered healthy competition with the railways until well into the twentieth century and today provides a wonderful corridor of tranquillity to the rambler, cyclist and pleasure boater alike. In The Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Yorkshire Dr Gary Firth has collected over two hundred photographs of the canal's eastern section from Leeds to Barnoldswick, as well as contemporary documents and reports. Accompanied by evocative commentary, these show the changing face of the Leeds & Liverpool - its vanished industries, its forgotten branch canals and a Yorkshire boating culture that has passed into the mists of time.

Through his own experiences and meticulous investigative reporting, Orwell exposes the harsh living conditions, poverty, and social injustices faced by coal miners and other industrial workers in the region. He documents their struggles with unemployment, poor housing, and inadequate healthcare, as well as the pervasive sense of hopelessness and despair that permeates their lives. In the second half of the The Road to Wigan Pier Orwell delves into the complexities of political ideology, as he grapples with the shortcomings of both socialism and capitalism in addressing the needs of the working class. GEORGE ORWELL was born in India in 1903 and passed away in London in 1950. As a journalist, critic, and author, he was a sharp commentator on his era and its political conditions and consequences.

Book excerpt: For a hundred and fifty years, between the plod of packhorse trains and the arrival of the railways, canals were the high-tech water machine driving the industrial revolution. Amazing feats of engineering, they carried the rural into the city and the urban into the countryside, and changed the lives of everyone. And then, just when their purpose was extinguished by modern transport, they were saved from extinction and repurposed as a 'slow highways' network, a peaceful and countrywide haven from our too-busy age. Today, there are more boats on the canals than in their Victorian heyday. Writer and slow adventurer Jasper Winn spent a year exploring Britain's waterways on foot and by bike, in a kayak and on narrowboats. Along a thousand miles of 'wet roads and water streets' he discovered a world of wildlife corridors, underground adventures, the hardware of heritage and history, new boating communities, endurance kayak races and remote towpaths. He shared journeys with some of the last working boat people and met the anglers, walkers, boaters, activists, volunteers and eccentrics who have made the waterways their home. In Britain most of us live within five miles of a canal, and reading this book we will see them in an entirely new light.
