Book excerpt: In early 1864, Robert E. Lee began experimenting with tactical innovations for the upcoming spring campaign. To this end, he ordered the organization of sharpshooter battalions. In Lee’s Sharpshooters Dunlop chronicles the training processes, the ordnance tests and the marksmanship exercises the soldiers went through to become skilled and confident skirmishers. Robert E. Lee’s decision didn’t turn the tide of the war, but it did give rise to the specialized soldier whose “intelligence, marksmanship and unfaltering courage” was remarkable. Contributions from other battalions such as those of Lt. Robert F. Ward from Davis’s Mississippi brigade provide first hand accounts of the sharpshooters’ part in the battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania.

A story of Mississippi sharpshooters, by their commander, Capt. Robert F. Maj. W. S. Dunlop, Little Rock, Ark. Dear Comrade: Your having asked me to contribute a sketch of the operations of the company of Lee's sharpshooters which I had the honor to command, it affords me much pleasure to comply with your request, and the more so because you grant the esteemed privilege of incorporating in my contribution the letters of the correspondent of the London Morning Herald, cantaining an account of the battles of the Wilderness and of Spottsylvania, as witnessed by the correspondent with Gen. Lee, and as he learned the facts from other general officers. The letters appeared in the Richmond Enquirer, in May, 1864, and the papers containing them have been in my possession ever since, and so far as I know have never been republished in any form. I have desired ever since the close of the conflict between the Federal and Confederate armies, that I might enjoy the privilege of making a statement for publication of a part of what came under my observation, especially during the campaign of the Wilderness, which, as historically known, embraces the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania and second Cold Harbor, from the 3d of May to the 3d of June, . 1864, one month. The company of sharpshooters which I commanded covered the front of the forty-second Mississippi regiment, of Davis's brigade, which was in Heth's..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lee's Sharpshooters; Or the Forefront of Battle: A Story of Southern Valor That Never Has Been Told The author proposes to add to the great volume of American war history a mere postscript, setting forth in systematic detail the operations of a single battalion of Lee's sharpshooters, whose services on the field of battle entitle it, as a distinctive organization, to some historical consideration. This to be followed by such sketches of its co-ordinates in the same service as may fall within the scope of his own personal knowledge or may be gathered from other legitimate sources. It is not designed to disturb the record, or detract one iota from the renown achieved by the gallant brigades of which these battalions were proud to compose a part; but only to rescue from oblivion and the shadows of a fading memory, the story of their exploits upon the historic hills of Virginia, is this difficult yet pleasing task undertaken. They were, as Kingslake puts it, "the spike heads" or case-hardened steel points attached to the brigades, whose duty it was to crush the outer lines and admit our columns to the inner lines and strongholds of the enemy. How well they met the purposes of their organization, this volume proposes to tell.

Book Searching for Black Confederates

Download or read book Searching for Black Confederates written by Kevin M. Levin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 150 years after the end of the Civil War, scores of websites, articles, and organizations repeat claims that anywhere between 500 and 100,000 free and enslaved African Americans fought willingly as soldiers in the Confederate army. But as Kevin M. Levin argues in this carefully researched book, such claims would have shocked anyone who served in the army during the war itself. Levin explains that imprecise contemporary accounts, poorly understood primary-source material, and other misrepresentations helped fuel the rise of the black Confederate myth. Moreover, Levin shows that belief in the existence of black Confederate soldiers largely originated in the 1970s, a period that witnessed both a significant shift in how Americans remembered the Civil War and a rising backlash against African Americans' gains in civil rights and other realms. Levin also investigates the roles that African Americans actually performed in the Confederate army, including personal body servants and forced laborers. He demonstrates that regardless of the dangers these men faced in camp, on the march, and on the battlefield, their legal status remained unchanged. Even long after the guns fell silent, Confederate veterans and other writers remembered these men as former slaves and not as soldiers, an important reminder that how the war is remembered often runs counter to history.
