Download or read book Lectures on Theoretical and Physical Chemistry Vol 1 written by J. H. Van 'T. Hoff and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theoretical and Physical Chemistry, Vol. 1: Chemical Dynamics The following work reproduces the lectures given by me at the University of Berlin, under the title of 'Selected Chapters in Physical Chemistry.' It really includes somewhat more, for in the strictly limited time it was only possible to pick out certain leading points, in order to cover the whole subject, in one-hour lectures, through the course of four semesters. So this little book may perhaps be a welcome guide to those who wish to possess themselves of the latest acquisitions of physical chemistry. Book Physical Chemistry of Fast Reactions

Download or read book Physical Chemistry of Fast Reactions written by B. Levitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book are devoted to the elementary reactions of small molecules in the gas phase, with some emphasis on reactions important in combustion. The first three chapters cover experimental measurements made at high temperatures, mainly using shock waves and flames; the final chapter describes discharge flow methods near room temperature. The authors-all active in the fields they describe were asked to aim at a level intermediate between a textbook and a review, designed for readers not already familiar with this branch of chemical kinetics. We hope the book will prove especially useful to research workers in related subjects, to research students, and perhaps as source material for the preparation of lectures. The examples have been chosen to illustrate the theoretical basis of the topics rather than attempt a complete coverage. Professors Wagner and Troe describe the remarkable progress made in recent years in measuring dissociation rates for small molecules. Tests ofunimolecular reaction theories are usually made in the 'fall-off' region of pressure: the kinetics change from first order to second order as the pressure is reduced. For large molecules this region lies below atmospheric pressure and is relatively easily accessible. For molecules with four or less atoms, however, the fall-off region lies well above atmospheric pressure: it has been explored using the high pressure shock tube techniques developed by the authors.

Book Intellectual Mastery of Nature Theoretical Physics from Ohm to Einstein Volume 1

Download or read book Intellectual Mastery of Nature Theoretical Physics from Ohm to Einstein Volume 1 written by Christa Jungnickel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1990-09-15 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christina Jungnickel and Russell McCormmach have created in these two volumes a panoramic history of German theoretical physics. Bridging social, institutional, and intellectual history, they chronicle the work of the researchers who, from the first years of the nineteenth century, strove for an intellectual mastery of nature. Volume 1 opens with an account of physics in Germany at the beginning of the nineteenth century and of German physicists' reception of foreign mathematical and experimental work. Jungnickel and McCormmach follow G. S. Ohm, Wilhelm Weber, Franz Neumann, and others as these scientists work out the new possibilities for physics, introduce student laboratories and instruction in mathematical physics, organize societies and journals, and establish and advance major theories of classical physics. Before the end of the nineteenth century, German physics and its offspring, theoretical physics, had acquired nearly their present organizational forms. The foundations of the classical picture of the physical world had been securely laid, preparing the way for the developments that are the subject of volume 2.

Book Encyclopedia of Chemical Physics and Physical Chemistry

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Chemical Physics and Physical Chemistry written by John H. Moore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 986 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics introduces possibly unfamiliar areas, explains important experimental and computational techniques, and describes modern endeavors. The encyclopedia quickly provides the basics, defines the scope of each subdiscipline, and indicates where to go for a more complete and detailed explanation. Particular attention has been paid to symbols and abbreviations to make this a user-friendly encyclopedia. Care has been taken to ensure that the reading level is suitable for the trained chemist or physicist. The encyclopedia is divided in three major sections: FUNDAMENTALS: the mechanics of atoms and molecules and their interactions, the macroscopic and statistical description of systems at equilibrium, and the basic ways of treating reacting systems. The contributions in this section assume a somewhat less sophisticated audience than the two subsequent sections. At least a portion of each article inevitably covers material that might also be found in a modern, undergraduate physical chemistry text. METHODS: the instrumentation and fundamental theory employed in the major spectroscopic techniques, the experimental means for characterizing materials, the instrumentation and basic theory employed in the study of chemical kinetics, and the computational techniques used to predict the static and dynamic properties of materials. APPLICATIONS: specific topics of current interest and intensive research. For the practicing physicist or chemist, this encyclopedia is the place to start when confronted with a new problem or when the techniques of an unfamiliar area might be exploited. For a graduate student in chemistry or physics, the encyclopedia gives a synopsis of the basics and an overview of the range of activities in which physical principles are applied to chemical problems. It will lead any of these groups to the salient points of a new field as rapidly as possible and gives pointers as to where to read about the topic in more detail.

Book Physical Chemistry Experimental and Theoretical

Download or read book Physical Chemistry Experimental and Theoretical written by G. Van Praagh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1950, this textbook was intended for school students with the aim of providing an introductory understanding of chemistry. The book introduces physical chemistry through multiple and diverse experiments; each experiment designed to reinforce a new topic and reflect theorems, approaches and historical development. Notably, the treatment throughout is from the point of view of the kinetic-molecular theory rather than that of the laws of thermodynamics, whilst emphasis is also placed upon physico-chemical phenomena and their significance in various branches of science, such as metallurgy, chemical syntheses and mineralogy. There are twelve chapters in total, with chapter titles ranging from 'Atoms and molecules' to 'Mass action and the ionic dissociation theory'. Various diagrams and plate sections are also included for reference. This book will be of value to chemistry students and scholars as well as those interested in the history of education.

Download or read book Electrodynamics written by Wolfgang Pauli and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, the distinguished theoretical physicist Wolfgang Pauli delivered a landmark series of lectures at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of classical and modern physics was painstakingly recorded not only by his students but also by a number of collaborators, whose carefully edited transcriptions resulted in a remarkable six-volume work. This volume, the first of the series, presents a brief survey of the historical development and then-current problems of electrodynamics, followed by sections on electrostatics and magnetostatics, steady-state currents, quasi-static fields, and rapidly varying fields. As does each book in the series, Volume 1 includes an index and a wealth of helpful figures, and can be read independently of the series by those who wish to focus on a particular topic. Originally published in 1973, the text remains entirely relevant thanks to Pauli's manner of presentation. As Victor F. Weisskopf notes in the Foreword to the series, Pauli's style is "commensurate to the greatness of its subject in its clarity and impact. Pauli's lectures show how physical ideas can be presented clearly and in good mathematical form, without being hidden in formalistic expertise." Alone or as part of the complete set, this volume represents a peerless resource invaluable to individuals, libraries, and other institutions.
