Book Lectures on Theology Vol 4 of 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Theology Vol 4 of 4 Classic Reprint written by John Dick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 4 of 4 The procedure of God towards the saint has been compared to the manner of proceeding under the ceremonial law, in re ference to a house infected with leprosy. The priest shall break down the house, the stones of it, and the timber thereof, and all the mortar of the house; and he shall carry them forth out of the city into an unclean place. In like man ner God destroys the earthly house of our tabernacle, which is polluted with sin, and commands it to be carried to the grave. It has been remarked too, that under the ancient economy earthen vessels which had been defiled were broken, but those which were formed of a more solid or a more precious sub stance, were only washed with water, or purified by fire. Our souls are vessels of gold, and for this reason, although polluted, he does not destroy them, but he reduces our sinful bodies to dust. These, however, are merely illustrations, and I believe fanciful illustrations, of the fact, and they give us no assistance in discovering the reasons of it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 3 of 4 This I consider as the true account of the purity of the hu man nature of our Saviour. It was not owing simply to his being born of a Virgin, although this is commonly assigned as the cause, but to his not being included in the representa' tion of Adam. But all were included in it who were derived from him by the ordinary mode of continuing the species; and hence it was necessary that, in order to distinguish him, our Lord, who never was in Adam as a federal head, should descend from him in a miraculous manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 2 of 4 When we speak of truth as one of his perfections, we as sume, that the communications which have been made by him to men accord with the nature of things, and are genuine ex pressions of his views and intentions. Falsehood consists in designed misrepresentation of the subject of discourse, and in creating expectations which we do not mean to realize, in affirming that that is which is not, and that we will do what we have resolved not to do. There are different ways in which God has made declarations to us; by our senses, by reason, and by revelation. On each of these we shall bestow some observations and with respect to the last, in which we are so deeply concerned, I shall consider the doctrines which it proposes to our faith, the promises which awaken our hopes, the threatenings which are addressed to our fears, and shew that these, as well as the invitations, entreaties, and expostu lations with which the Scriptures abound, are characterised by veracity and sincerity. Book Lectures on the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans Vol 4 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans, Vol. 4 Theology has its steeps and its altitudes - pin nacles far out of sight, or shooting upwardly to heaven till lost in the cloudy envelopment which surrounds them. Yet this does not hinder that there should be a most distinct and discernible path which winds around its basement, and by which the lowliest of Zion's travellers may find an ascending way, that at length when the toils of his pilgrimage are ended, will land him in a place of purest transparency, where he shall know even as he is known. There are some whose vision can carry them more aloft among the heights of ardu ous speculation. Yet let none be discouraged for there is a way of duty that may be practised and of doctrine that may be understood which is accessible to all - a way the entrance upon which requires but the union of a desirous heart with a doing hand - a union this that is often realized by the veriest babe in intellect; who, wholly unable though he be to scan the awful mysteries of a pre destinating God, yet can lift the prayer both of affection and confidence, while looking to Him in the more legible as well as more lovely aspect of a God that waiteth to be gracious. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 1 of 2 Tm: subject of the following memoir was the son of the Rev. Alexander Dick, of Aberdeen, Scotland. His father was descended from a very respectable family in the county of Kinross, and connected with the church of Scotland. He pura sued his literary course at the University of St. Andrew's, and prepared for the ministry at the Theological Seminary of the Secession Church at Glasgow, then under the care of the Rev. James Fisher. Shortly after his licensure he was in stalled pastor of a church in Aberdeen. At the time of his settlement in that city, the spiritual condition of the north of Scotland generally, and of this city in particular, was lament able indeed. Beside himself, there was not' known to be another minister who preached the gospel in its purity in that place or the immediate neighbourhood. Mr. Dick was not dis tinguishcd for his extmordinary talents nor his extensive literary attainments; but he was eminent for what is far better - holi ness, and devotion to the cause of Christ, for primitive simpli city of character, and unwearied diligence in the duties of his ofice. His life, according to the inscription on his monu ment, was a perpetual commentary on the purity of his doctrine. After labouring in that city successfully for thirty. Four years, he died in 1793, universally lamented. His memory, as the writer of this memoir can testify, is still precious in Aberdeen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology The writer of the Memoir takes pleasure in acknowledging his obligations for valuable aid to Rev. John E. Tyler, to whom, it will be noticed, several of the letters relating to his father are addressed. Special acknowledgments are also due to the writers of the letters. Nearly all of them have been received since the Memoir was written; they may be regarded, therefore, as so many independent witnesses to the correctness of the estimate there given of Dr. Tyler's char acter and work. It can not escape the notice of the reader, that there is a remarkable agreement in the letters as to the main features of Dr. Tyler's character, the same expressive terms being often used by different writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 2 of 2 Predictions of the Messiah prior to the Appearance of Christ - Their Import - Evidence that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah. Ive have seen that Jesus Christ is the Surety and Mediator of the New Covenant; and, in speaking of him in these characters, it was impossible to avoid references to the mysterious constitution of his person. This, however, is a subject so important, as to be entitled to distinct consideration, both be cause it is the foundation upon which the whole scheme of redemption de pends, and because some men of corrupt minds have, in all ages, and in various forms, exerted themselves to overthrow it. But, before we enter upon it, it will be proper to attend to the notices which were given of the Saviour to the church prior to his manifestation in the flesh, and then to show that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Lectures, Etc: Upon Select Topics in Revealed Theology This volume, as its title imports, consists of Essays, &c., from the pen of Dr. Taylor upon various topics in Revealed Theology. Dr. Taylor did not leave a fully Written system or course of Theological lectures. The notes and briefs from which he lectured are so full indeed, that it would not be dif ficult to give to the public his views in the form of a com plete system of Revealed Theology. But this would involve the necessity of expanding, by another hand, the heads of argu ment which were sketched by him. In many of these views there is little that is original with him, except the arrange ment and development of the reasoning. There seems there fore, to be no sufficient reason for publishing arguments with which theologians are already familiar. It would not how ever be just to the memory of the deceased, nor to the cause of truth, to withhold any discussions which may promise to throw light - upon important scriptural doctrines, or to advance in any way the science of Christian Theology. Download or read book Lectures on Christian Theology Classic Reprint written by George Christian Knapp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Christian Theology This was a state of things which Spener de plored. Others before him, especially pious lay men, had noticed these evils, but had withdrawn, like the mystics of a former period, and sought in private contemplation that satisfaction of their spiritual wants which they could not obtain from the learned jargon of the pulpit; or if, like An dreas and Arndt, they had lifted up a voice of rem onstrance against the prevailing disorders, it had been drowned in the noise of angry pole mics. But the reputation and influence of Spener were too great to allow his remonstrances to pass unnoticed. Without aiming at the name, he performed the work of a reformer. In the unpretending form of a preface to an edition of Arndt's Sermons, he published in 1675 his Pia Desidert'a, in which he urged the necessity of amending the prevailing mode of instruction and preaching. It was his great object to divert attention from the symbols, and direct it to the scriptures. He wished every student to derive his system for himself directly from the Bible; and to feel and enjoy the truths thus learned, rather than contend about them; and especially he wished the teachers in the universities, and the preachers in the desk, abandoning for ever their foolish questions and subtle dialectics, to labour to promote the solid instruction and the true piety of those committed to their charge. Download or read book Popular Lectures on Theological Themes Classic Reprint written by Archibald Alexander Hodge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Lectures on Theological Themes The Lectures which compose this volume originated in the request of a number of ladies in Princeton to be formed into a class for instruction in theological subjects. This class was continued for two winters, the method adopted being entirely oral. In the fall of 1885 a few ladies in Philadelphia proposed that the Lectures should be repeated to a similar class in that city. Large audiences of both men and women were attracted to hear them, and the reports published in the Presbyterian and the Presbyterian Journal awakened a desire for their repetition elsewhere. The reports published in The Presbyterian were for the most part from manuscript furnished by the author, which in some instances was prepared after the delivery of the Lectures; and the courtesy of The Presbyterian in permitting the author to use these, with revision and amendments, is gratefully acknowledged. In 1886 it was proposed that a shorter course be prepared to complete the presentation of subjects, and that the whole should be issued in a volume.
