Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Works the Genius of Washington Allston The Lectures contained in this volume are given to the public, as they were left by the author, at his death. There might, perhaps, be some question as to the propriety of giving to the world an unfinished work of criticism upon such a subject; but the words of the author himself, in speaking of the great unfinished picture of the Artist, whose name and fame it was his object, so far as it was in his power, to make more extensively known and honored among us, furnish a sufficient apology. It seems to be, "a work from which lessons may be drawn of use to society; too valuable, too beautiful, too much of it near its completion, too instructive, in many ways, to be rolled up forever, or seen by a few and hidden from the common eye." Book The Correspondence of Washington Allston

Download or read book The Correspondence of Washington Allston written by Nathalia Wright and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington Allston (1779-1843), the first major American artist trained in Europe, produced important paintings, explored sculpture and architecture, and published poetry and art criticism. On his return to America he became influential in the cultural and intellectual life of New England. Allston "knew everyone" and corresponded with many of the leading figures of his day, including Wordsworth, Longfellow, Irving, Sully, and Morse.Nathalia Wright's edition is the most comprehensive work to date on Allston, bringing together all known letters by and to him and describing his principal activities in years for which correspondence is lacking. Allston holds an important place in the history of American culture and European art and has long deserved such a volume, which offers a fascinating view of the world of arts and letters during the early American flowering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of the "sister arts" of the nineteenth century by younger scholars in art history, literature, and American studies presents a startling array of perspectives on the fundamental role played by images in culture and society. Drawing on the latest thinking about vision and visuality as well as on recent developments in literary theory and cultural studies, the contributors situate paintings, sculpture, monument art, and literary images within a variety of cultural contexts. The volume offers fresh and sometimes extended discussions of single works as well as reevaluations of artistic and literary conventions and analyses of the economic, social, and technological forces that gave them shape and were influenced by them in turn. A wide range of figures are significantly reassessed, including the painters Charles Willson Peale, Washington Allston, Thomas Cole, George Caleb Bingham, Fitz Hugh Lane, and Mary Cassatt, and such writers as James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and William Dean Howells. One overarching theme to emerge is the development of an American national subjectivity as it interacted with the transformation of a culture dominated by religious values to one increasingly influenced by commercial imperatives. The essays probe the ways in which artists and writers responded to the changing conditions of the cultural milieu as it was mediated by such factors as class and gender, modes of perception and representation, and conflicting ideals and realities.
