Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1833 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX N. I. OBSERVATIONS ON STYLE. (See titpra, pp. 45, 118.) The use of writitig, as of speaking, is to express our thoughts with certainty and perspicuity. But as writing is a permanent thing, it is requisite that written forms of speech have a greater degree of precision and perspicuity than is necessary in colloquial forms, or such as very well answer the purpose of common conversation. Style, therefore, which is the manner of writing, may be deemed perfect, when it adequately expresses the whole of what is intended; and every other fault or imperfection in a composition ought to be charged to the account of the thought or conception. But, since every defect in the meaning is indicated by the style, all critics, in their observations on style, generally comprehend under this term, what, strictly speaking, belongs to the other: and, as I approve of their reason, I shall, after their example, use the word in the same latitude. The correspondence between every person's thoughts and language is perhaps more strict, and universal, than is generally imagined: for since there can be but few perceptions or ideas existing in the human mind, which were not, in their very rise and first impression, associated with the words that denote them; it is almost impossible, but that ideas and the symbols, or expressions of them, must arise in the mind at the same time; and if any person will but attend to his own mental operations, he will be conscious that, even when he hath no use for words, he cannot so much as meditate or think without them. Whether their attendance be necessary or not, the ideas of words will accompany the ideas of things; and whenever a man's meaning cannot be expressed in words, he hath, in fact, only a confused apprehension...

Book Language and Problems of Knowledge

Download or read book Language and Problems of Knowledge written by Noam Chomsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1987-08-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language and Problems of Knowledge is Noam Chomsky's most accessible statement on the nature, origins, and current concerns of the field of linguistics. He frames the lectures with four fundamental questions: What do we know when we are able to speak and understand a language? How is this knowledge acquired? How do we use this knowledge? What are the physical mechanisms involved in the representation, acquisition, and use of this knowledge? Starting from basic concepts, Chomsky sketches the present state of our answers to these questions and offers prospects for future research. Much of the discussion revolves around our understanding of basic human nature (that we are unique in being able to produce a rich, highly articulated, and complex language on the basis of quite rudimentary data), and it is here that Chomsky's ideas on language relate to his ideas on politics. The initial versions of these lectures were given at the Universidad Centroamericana in Managua, Nicaragua, in March 1986. A parallel set of lectures on contemporary political issues given at the same time has been published by South End Press under the title On Power and Ideology: The Managua Lectures. Language and Problems of Knowledge is sixteenth in the series Current Studies in Linguistics, edited by Jay Keyser.
