Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Origin and Growth Psalms The following lectures were delivered at the Johns Hopkins University, during the winter of 1878-79, before a general audience. The form in which they were given was probably not that in which their author would have finally embodied his researches, or have permanently submitted them as a subject of scholarly criticism. It has seemed, however, to many beside the publishers of this volume, that these lectures should be placed before a larger audience; not simply as the only completed work left by a scholar of very remarkable independence and promise, but as a most valuable contribution to the study to which his life was devoted - the reverent and critical investigation of the History and Literature of the Hebrew Scriptures, It is entirely certain that Professor Murray's early death, occurring but a few days after the closing of this course, took from his branch of learning one of the most earnest and able students it has counted in America. Before the publication of these lectures, it was necessary to add to a few passages brief explanatory notes, verifications of references, transliterations, &c., such as the author himself would have supplied to aid the general reader unacquainted with Oriental languages. This scholarly service has been very kindly performed for the volume by the Rev. Dr. C. H. Toy, who has, however, in every case, affixed his initial to the note thus furnished. Book The Story of the Psalms Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Psalms Classic Reprint written by Henry Van Dyke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Psalms We ought to be grateful that it did not fall down from heaven like the fabulous statue of Diana of the Ephesians; nor was it whispered into any man's ear by a pigeon after the fashion in which Mahomet said that he received the Koran but God caused it to grow upon the earth, and to draw into itself all that was noblest and purest in many generations of our fellow men. We ought to remember that there is not a book in it, and hardly a chapter, the threads of which are not interwoven with the actual experience of a human life. Download or read book A Fresh Approach to the Psalms Classic Reprint written by W. O. E. Oesterley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fresh Approach to the Psalms The following chapters do not make any claim to originality. There is nothing they contain which is not familiar to Old Testament scholars but it is hoped that they may be of interest and use to many who are not experts, for the writer has been at pains, apart from his own researches, to consult a number of the most modern commentaries on the Psalms, as well as some which are not of recent date. Moreover, some subjects are dealt with, which, for Obvious reasons, are not discussed in Commentaries; but which, nevertheless, have a certain bearing on the study of the Psalms. Readers who are not in a position to consult many books, may be glad to have these subjects placed before them we mean, such subjects as the music of the ancient east; music among the Hebrews; the liturgical use of the psalms the psalms in the worship of the ancient synagogue the origin of the synagogue; the psalms in the Christian Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Practical, on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 1 of 3 It is of more interest to me than it can be to the public to say that I cannot close these labours, continued through so many years of my life, without deep emotion. The very fact that any work of life is ended, however humble or unimportant it may be in itself, is fitted to suggest solemn reflections to a man's own mind. The nature of the work In which I have thus been engaged is such as to give great additional solemnity to these reflections. He undertakes a work of great responsibility, who engages in the task of endeavouring to explain the Word of God, and who may thus give direction to the views, perhaps, of thou sands, ou subjects that may affect their destiny for ever. Book Ten Studies in the Psalms Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ten Studies in the Psalms Classic Reprint written by John Edgar McFadyen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Studies in the Psalms There is, perhaps, no part of the Old Testament which speaks so simply and directly to the universal heart as the Psalter. Yet even the most familiar psalms come home to us with increased freshness and power when, by sympathetic study, we have traveled back to the world in which their writers stood, and learned to look out upon it with their eyes. The short studies in this volume are an attempt to interpret, in this way, a few of the psalms that deal with important aspects of the religious life, and to show their vital bearing upon the life of to - day. In their doubts, struggles, and aspirations, those ancient men are very near us, and they speak to us with an accent that is strangely modern. I have tried to make this plain in the course of the exposition, and to illustrate their kinship with us by quotation from modern writers. The treatment of the psalms here selected is expository. But, without. Being didactic or homiletic, I have at the same time sought to make it practically helpful, by gathering up the study of each psalm in a series of personal questions, which are intended both to carry the reader into the heart of the psalm, and also to enable him to search his own inner life. I desire here to express my obligation to Messrs. Charles Serib ner's Sons for their generous courtesy in allowing me to reprint, from my volume on The Messages of the Psalmists in The Mes sages of the Bible Series the paraphrase of the psalms here selected for study. Book Studies in the Book of Psalms Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Book of Psalms Classic Reprint written by Lincoln Hulley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Book of Psalms To call job a tragedy and Solomon's song a comedy is literary trifling and is confusing. If no better name exists, it were better to rec ognize the new type and to invent a new name. The poetry of the Hebrews is so dif ferent, in respect to even the poetic elements, from other poetry as to require a unique analysis and a unique description, and why not its products? The Hebrews acted as diflerently from Europeans in this as they did in the matter of tense, and as in the case Of the tense, it results in as much confusion to speak Of Hebrew drama. Solomon's song is a single poem or a series of poems grouped into a unity, on the subject of love and would better be called an idyl. Book Christ and His Church in the Book of Psalms Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christ and His Church in the Book of Psalms Classic Reprint written by Andrew A. Bonar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and His Church in the Book of Psalms Few of the Books of Scripture are richer than the Book of Psalms, that Hymn-book for all times, as it has been called. There, says Luther, you look right down into the heart of saints, and behold all man ner of joys and joyous thoughts toward God and his love springing lustily into life Again, you look into the heart of saints as into death and hell! How gloomy and dark their mournful visions of God. An other has said, The Psalms teach me to prize a much tried life. And Tholuck (who gives these quotations) remarks, Songs which, like the Psalms, have stood the test of three thousand years, contain a germ for eternity.
