Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures, on the Literary History of the Bible There lies before me a volume called the Bible that is, by way Of eminence, the Book. It claims to be of divine origin. Its antiquity is very great. Its con tents are of the deepest interest; and it has exerted a more decided influence over the condition of men, than any other, or perhaps all other books united. I know not how I can better perform the part assigned me in sustaining these Lectures, than by presenting an outline of the literary history, present state, and future prospects Of this Book. Download or read book The Literary Character of the Bible written by H. Bucher Swoope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Character of the Bible: A Lecture Delivered Before the Wilmington Institute at Wilmington, Delaware, January 8th, 1857 Hence, to form even a proximate idea of the true liter ary value of the sacred writings, we are compelled to adopt some such process as that by which we determine the dis tance and magnitude of those bodies too far above us to be directly estimated, as the stars by their parallax. And in attempting, briefly, to carry out this design, let us eschew the method ordinarily adopted in critical essays on the Bible, and instead of dividing the books of which it consists into Historical, Prophetical, and Poetical, let us rather re gard it as one beautiful whole, composed of the three grand elements of all literature - History, Philosophy, and Poetry; for we find the facts of History, the truths of Philosophy, and the gems of Poesy, blended together on every page of the great volume, from the first startling announcement in Genesis, to the last words of John's sublime vision on the isle of Patmos. Book The Old Testament Student Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Testament Student Classic Reprint written by William Rainey Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Student Plainly a reconstruction must rest at first upon a critical restoration of the text both of the Bible itself and of outside sources. It requires also a most exact and historical inter pretation of these sources. Hence the cry of real scholarship in Germany is, Back to the sources! And this Quellen kritik is producing a large mass of technical literature. Hence it is that Prof. Dillmann lectures on d104 Geschichte des Alten Testaments and lays Special emphasis in his Seminar upon emendations Of the Hebrew text and its comparison with the Septuagint; that Prof: Harnack edits a series of d104en und Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Alt Christlichen Literatur, and that in this series Prof. Weiss has just published a very careful and scholarly discussion of the text of the book of Revelation. Prof. Harnack too in his Seminar for Church History discusses only the origi nal patristic texts. The appearance however at recent dates of so many new introductory works to both the Old and New Testaments, as well as lecture courses on Introductions (which are more frequent here than in America) is an evidence that teachers and scholars are endeavoring to bring into more general notice this effort to construct a new background for the biblical literature. The same reason brings Prof Pflei derer to combine in his lectures the two subjects of New Testament Introduction and New Testament Theology in order to bring the literary development of the New Testa ment literature more forcibly into connection with the progress of Christian doctrine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book About the English Bible Tms volume is simply what its title indicates, A Book about the English Bible. It has grown out of a series of lectures delivered to students in the University of Pennsylvania, the purpose of which was to give a brief account of the English Bible, its immediate sources and their contents, their literary background and surroundings, the forms and characteristics of the constituent books and their relation to each other. To the chapters, in which these subjects are suggested, rather than discussed, have been added several others containing a short history of the translation of the Bible into English, from Saxon times to our own day. Attention is called to the differences between the commonly used English versions as regards contents and translation, and to the reasons for the differences. Will a] ways recur with sentiments of grateful regard. W i It is very true that I have long been desirous to see the Branch of Learning, to' which you refer, introduced more fully into our Literary Institutions. The aspect of the times, and Opinions recently promulgated, have also greatly strengthened my convictions of its importance. An impetus has been given to the minds of men within the last thirty or forty years, which has rendered progress in Science rapid beyond example. Nature, m her whole varied extent, is fast yielding up her secrets. But the harmony and connection of these discoveries with the lead ing truths Of the Scriptures do not yet seem to be rightly understood, or fully appreciated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Humor of the Bible: A Literary Study While many have taken in hand to set forth in order the pathos and sublimity of the Bible, those literary elements comprised under the title of this book have rarely been mentioned. Feeling that here was a field untraversed, the author of this little volume began an investigation whose results were originally embodied in an article published some years ago in an Eastern review. That article is given in Poole's Index as the only one extant upon the subject. Since its publication, additional study has brought to light other examples of the use of Wit and Humor by the writers of the Bible. These later results were embodied in a course of lectures delivered last winter before the students of Lombard University, Galesburg, Ill. They are now given to the public in the present volume. It would be presumptuous to claim that these few pages exhaust the subject. Such a claim the author does not wish to make. Further research would no doubt bring to light instances that have escaped him. It is hoped, however, that these studies may be sufiicientlv complete to awaken interest in a long-neglected side of our sacred literature. It is a pleasure to assign to Dr. Franklin W. Hooper, director of the Institute, whatever credit the work may merit. Certainly it would not have been undertaken without his kindly urgency. Book The Literary Characteristics and Achievements of the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Literary Characteristics and Achievements of the Bible Classic Reprint written by W. Trail and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Characteristics and Achievements of the Bible It is not without considerable hesitation that I present this volume to the public. The subject, in detached parts, has been treated by far abler pens; but, so far as I am aware, the attempt has not been made, in any single volume at least, to exhibit the subject with the same comprehensiveness and system. Where I had the labours of preceding writers to direct and aid me, I felt less hesitation; where I had not these guides, the importance of the subject not unfrequently caused me to doubt my own ability to handle it, so as while gaining the ear of those who are of literary taste and culture, there should be nothing to offend the sensibilities of a pure and simple piety. I had an abiding conviction that a free exhibition of the literature of the Bible is calculated to strengthen our belief in its divine inspiration; but, on the other hand, it needed caution, while freely exhibiting its literary characteristics, not to present the Bible as merely a literary production. This, of course, does not mean that they have not been consulted. Few, beyond those who have done similar work, can estimate the amount of reading, as well as of consideration, necessary to give anything like a digest of the Bible, and a judgment on all the criti cal problems which rise by the score, and even by the hundred.
