Book Lectures on the History of Christian Dogmas Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the History of Christian Dogmas Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by August Neander and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Christian Dogmas, Vol. 1 of 2 Neander's Lectures on the History of Christian Dogmas were among those to which he attached peculiar importance, and which he felt special pleasure in delivering. His hearers will recollect with interest his vivid delineation of the great men whose forms he summoned to pass before them, and how, inspired by the power of Christian life in them, he described sympathetically the course of their development. Elevated himself by the truth and greatness of his ideas, he attracted his hearers into an admiration of their sublimity, and infused into them something of the love for those great minds which filled his own heart. When obliged to animadvert on their defects, he did it earnestly, yet as one who was fully conscious of his own. Neander, in all he performed, ever kept the Ethical in closest connexion with the Scientific. Deep truthfulness was a leading feature of his character; it held him back from wishing to advance Truth itself by disingenuous methods. Of this he gave proof, frequently and plainly, when his conduct was censured (as was often the case, down to a recent period) by those who were imperfectly acquainted with his position, or less scruprdous than himself about the means they employed. It was the truthfulness, also, stamped on his works which inspired confidence, for few Historians were so well qualified to receive and to communicate the Historical with unalloyed receptivity. Book History of Dogma Vol 1

Download or read book History of Dogma Vol 1 written by Adolf von Harnack and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dogma, Vol. 1: Library Adolph Harnack, Ordinary Prof. Of Church History in the University, and Fellow or the Royal Academy of Science, Berlin, Translated Bruce, the Third German Edition The task of describing the genesis of ecclesiastical dogma which I have attempted to perform in the following pages, has hitherto been proposed by very few scholars, and properly speaking undertaken by one only. I must therefore crave the indulgence of those acquainted with the subject for an attempt which no future historian of dogma can avoid. At first I meant to confine myself to narrower limits, but I was unable to carry out that intention, because the new arrangement of the material required a more detailed justification. Yet no one will find in the book, which presupposes the knowledge of Church history so far as it is given in the ordinary manuals, any repertory of the theological thought of Christian antiquity. The diversity of Christian ideas, or of ideas i closely related to Christianity, was very great in the first centuries. For that very reason a selection was necessary; but it was required, above all, by the aim of the work. The history of dogma has to give an account, only of those doctrines of Christian writers which were authoritative in wide circles, or which furthered the advance of the development; otherwise it would become a collection of monographs, and thereby lose its proper value. Book A Manual of the History of Dogmas Vol 1

Download or read book A Manual of the History of Dogmas Vol 1 written by Bernard J. Otten and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the History of Dogmas, Vol. 1: The Development of Dogmas During the Patristic Age, 100-869 The purpose of the present book is indicated by its title - A Manual of the History of Dogmas. The work strives to present as briefly as the subject matter permits what is usually dwelt upon at length by the Professor of the History of Dogmas in his class-lectures. It is intended primarily for ecclesiastical students, who follow a course of lectures on this important subject; but it is expected to provide useful reading for those others also, and they surely are many, who are interested in the matter of Doctrinal Development. In the author's opinion the crying need there is of a compendious History of Dogmas amply justifies the book's publication. No Manual of this kind has as yet appeared in English. It is true, the first three volumes of Tixeront's excellent work in French have been issued in an English translation, but that work is too voluminous to serve as a handbook. Hence the need of a compendious History of Dogmas still remains, and to supply this need the author offers the present Manual. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dogmas, Vol. 1: The Antenicene Theology There are some, perhaps, who would prefer to see the texts quoted exclusively from Migne's Greek and Latin Patrology, with the indication of the page and column, where they are to be found. Such a constraint I did not think it wise to impose on myself. For, in the first place, however useful and valu able Migne's editions are, they are not always faultless nor even sufficiently complete. Secondly, there are instances in which the works I referred to are divided into rather short sections, and then, the indication of the pages was thought superfluous. Still, such an indication is sometimes really use ful or even necessary, and when that is so, it will be given. Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of God Vol 1 written by Emil Brunner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God, Vol. 1: Dogmatics Dogmatics is not the Word of God. God can make His Word prevail in the world without theology. But at a time when human thought is so often confused and perverted by fantastic ideas and theories, spun out of men's own minds, it is evident that it is almost impossible to preserve the Divine Word with out the most passionate intellectual effort to te-think its mean ing and its content. The simple Christian may, it is true, under stand and preserve God's Word without theology; but for those Christians who are involved in the thinking of their own day, and who, as children of their own day, are deeply influenced by these currents of thought, an all-inclusive and thorough effort to re-think what has been given' 'to faith ls absolutely indis pensable. This is particularly true for those whose calling it is to proclaim this faith to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-08 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics and Notes on the History of Dogma Space forbids mention of the leading books in general Theology, Dogmatics and History Of Dogma studied during more than half a century Of reading in four languages. In the preparation of this handbook original sources have been used as far as available, but it has not been found desirable to encumber the text with a great mass Of notes and references. The book is not based upon another, but with the exception of terms and quoted definitions it is an attempt at presenting the result Of assimilation and investigation with the Object previously stated. It is my earnest hope that this manual of Christian Dogmatics may serve as a guide for devoted students of Scripture and Of our Lutheran Confessions, and an aid in the faithful exposition of both.
