Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pre-Raphaelitism: Lectures on Architecture and Painting, &C To debate as to which artists have been really faithful to the original principles of the Brotherhood is a sterile exercise. But it may be of use and interest to examine the history of the movement, and to see which of its inspiring ideas were of most value in that renewal of English painting it admittedly achieved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Painting and Design Finding in early life, the great want of a concise course of anatomical investigation by a painter, and fit only for a painter's use, I have endeavoured in these lectures to supply that deficiency, taking John Bell's admirable work on the bones and muscles as my guide, and adding all I had ascertained from dissection and reference to the' antique, rejecting what belongs ex elusively to the surgeon, and omitting no internal muscle which affects the external shape. It is hoped the student will be pleased to have his road shortened; for, although my own pupils have always had the advantage of this method, it is only now for the first time placed before the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Painting: Delivered at the Royal Academy The following six Lectures of Fuseli, who held for many years the situations of Professor of Painting and Keeper of the Royal Academy, now published for the first time, are printed verbatim from his manuscripts. I considered that (as Executor to his Will), in doing this, I should best meet the views of the deceased and the wishes of the Public, rather than in acting upon any opinions of my own, by using the pruning knife; for I am well aware that a few of the notions and some of the expressions may be found, from his pen, in other places. But to have omitted these would have injured the general argument, and severed the chain of his reasoning. With such feelings, the Lectures now appear without any omission or emendation on my part. Download or read book The Classic Point of View Six Lectures on Painting Delivered on the Scammon Foundation at the Art Institute of Chicago in the Year 1911 written by Kenyon Cox and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... VI TECHNIQUE Technique--I dislike the word but can find no precise equivalent for it--is that element of the art of painting which has the least reliance upon the observation of nature. The subject of a picture may be some place or event actually seen by the artist; the design may be suggested by something in nature or may even be wholly copied from some felicitous natural arrangement; the drawing, the light and shade, the coloring, however modified by the artistic intention, must be more or less imitative or representative. Nature may decide for the artist what he shall paint, but she has no voice in determining how he shall paint it. The means at the artist's disposal, the tools he uses and his methods of employing them, are decided by the history and traditions of his art. On the purely technical side a piece of painting is good or bad as any other piece of craftsmanship is good or bad, according as it employs its tools and materials to the best advantage and for the intrinsic beauty of the material result, making a skin of oil paint as beautiful as it can be made. But modern art has almost entirely lost the feeling for beautiful workmanship, as well as the knowledge of how to produce it. Of all the traditions of painting which were destroyed by the pseudo-classic revolution the technical tradition was the most thoroughly annihilated; and the modern artist has had to experiment and guess in the effort to rediscover the admirable methods of the older masters, or to muddle through without any method at all, relying upon the closeness of his observation of nature to take the place of any mastery of his materials. We have even so far forgotten what real technical beauty is, that if any man paints with a big brush and a certain swagger of...

Book A Text Book of the History of Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of the History of Painting Classic Reprint written by John C. Van Dyke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of the History of Painting The object of this series of text-books is to provide concise teachable histories of art for class-room use in schools and colleges. The limited time given to the study of art in the average educational institution has not only dictated the condensed style of the volumes, but has lim ited their scope of matter to the general features of art history. Archaeological discussions on special subjects and aesthetic theories have been avoided. The main facts of history as settled by the best authorities are given. If the reader choose to enter into particulars the bibliography cited at the head of each chapter will be found helpful. Illustrations have been introduced as sight-help to the text, and, to avoid repetition, abbreviations have been used wherever practicable. The enumeration of the principal extant works of an artist, school, or period, and where they may be found, which follows each chapter, may be service able not only as a summary of individual or school achieve ment, but for reference by travelling students in Europe.
