Download or read book Lectures on the Geometry of Position Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Theodor Reye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Geometry of Position, Vol. 1 It has been my aim to present in fair readable English the geometric ideas contained in the text, rather than to hold myself, at all points, to a literal translation yet I trust that I have not alto gether destroyed the charm of the original writing. Some changes have been made; the articles have been numbered, the examples set at the end of the lectures to which they are related and a few new ones added, explanatory notes have been inserted where they seemed necessary or helpful, and an index has been compiled. I have not deemed it advisable to omit from this edition any part of the original prefaces or introduction, even though, at this distance from their first publication, they might not be demanded in their entirety. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Geometry of Position, Vol. 1 In preparing this translation of Professor Reye's Geometric der Lage, my sole object has been to place within easy reach of the English-speaking student of pure geometry an elementary and systematic development of modern ideas and methods. The increasing interest in this study during recent years has seemed to demand a text-book at once scientific and sufficiently comprehensive to give the student a fair view of the field of modern pure geometry, and also sufficiently suggestive to incite him to investigation. The recognized merit of Professor Reye's work in all these regards is my only apology for offering this translation as an attempt to satisfy our present needs. It has been my aim to present in fair readable English the geometric ideas contained in the text, rather than to hold myself, at all points, to a literal translation; yet I trust that I have not altogether destroyed the charm of the original writing. For the most part I have endeavoured to hold rigorously to well-established terminology. A few instances of deviation from this principle, however, may be mentioned. Book Descriptive Geometry Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Descriptive Geometry Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Laban Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 1 Descriptive geometry as taught in the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology is intended to lead to the solution of the graphical problems which ordinarily arise in engineering and architecture; to train the imagination as necessary in these professions; to cultivate the sense of accuracy; and to give facility in drafting and the ability to read working drawings with ease. Consequently this book, an outgrowth of printed notes, treats the subject from the standpoint of the drafts man rather than from that of the mathematician, placing reliance on graphical methods, and omitting analytical methods. Great importance is attached to the drafting exercises which supplement, at the Institute, the use of the book; in these the student works out a set of study plates which give printed data for a large number of original problems and applications. Considerable work in the projection of solids is given in Chapter VII., since the author believes better results will be obtained if, from time to time, some of this work be combined with the study of the problems on the line and plane. It has also been thought best to give problems in all four quadrants, but the book contains a much larger number of examples in the first and third for the benefit of students in architecture and engineering. The author desires to express his obligations for general sug gestions regarding method and scope to Professor Burton, head of the Department of Drawing in the Institute, who has recently studied abroad the methods of teaching descriptive geometry in the Ecole des Beaux - Arts and other French schools. Mr. Harry C. Bradley, of the Institute, has assisted in the many details of preparation; the selection of data for the examples and the making of the drawings are largely his work. Book Lectures on the Geometry of Position

Download or read book Lectures on the Geometry of Position written by Theodor Reye and published by Jackson Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book The Geometry and Topology of Three Manifolds

Download or read book The Geometry and Topology of Three Manifolds written by William P. Thurston and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Thurston's work has had a profound influence on mathematics. He connected whole mathematical subjects in entirely new ways and changed the way mathematicians think about geometry, topology, foliations, group theory, dynamical systems, and the way these areas interact. His emphasis on understanding and imagination in mathematical learning and thinking are integral elements of his distinctive legacy. This four-part collection brings together in one place Thurston's major writings, many of which are appearing in publication for the first time. Volumes I–III contain commentaries by the Editors. Volume IV includes a preface by Steven P. Kerckhoff. Volume IV contains Thurston's highly influential, though previously unpublished, 1977–78 Princeton Course Notes on the Geometry and Topology of 3-manifolds. It is an indispensable part of the Thurston collection but can also be used on its own as a textbook or for self-study.

Book Lecture Notes on Motivic Cohomology

Download or read book Lecture Notes on Motivic Cohomology written by Carlo Mazza and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of a motive is an elusive one, like its namesake "the motif" of Cezanne's impressionist method of painting. Its existence was first suggested by Grothendieck in 1964 as the underlying structure behind the myriad cohomology theories in Algebraic Geometry. We now know that there is a triangulated theory of motives, discovered by Vladimir Voevodsky, which suffices for the development of a satisfactory Motivic Cohomology theory. However, the existence of motives themselves remains conjectural. This book provides an account of the triangulated theory of motives. Its purpose is to introduce Motivic Cohomology, to develop its main properties, and finally to relate it to other known invariants of algebraic varieties and rings such as Milnor K-theory, etale cohomology, and Chow groups. The book is divided into lectures, grouped in six parts. The first part presents the definition of Motivic Cohomology, based upon the notion of presheaves with transfers. Some elementary comparison theorems are given in this part. The theory of (etale, Nisnevich, and Zariski) sheaves with transfers is developed in parts two, three, and six, respectively. The theoretical core of the book is the fourth part, presenting the triangulated category of motives. Finally, the comparison with higher Chow groups is developed in part five. The lecture notes format is designed for the book to be read by an advanced graduate student or an expert in a related field. The lectures roughly correspond to one-hour lectures given by Voevodsky during the course he gave at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton on this subject in 1999-2000. In addition, many of the original proofs have been simplified and improved so that this book will also be a useful tool for research mathematicians. Book Lectures on Curves Surfaces and Projective Varieties

Download or read book Lectures on Curves Surfaces and Projective Varieties written by Mauro Beltrametti and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2009 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a wide-ranging introduction to algebraic geometry along classical lines. It consists of lectures on topics in classical algebraic geometry, including the basic properties of projective algebraic varieties, linear systems of hypersurfaces, algebraic curves (with special emphasis on rational curves), linear series on algebraic curves, Cremona transformations, rational surfaces, and notable examples of special varieties like the Segre, Grassmann, and Veronese varieties. An integral part and special feature of the presentation is the inclusion of many exercises, not easy to find in the literature and almost all with complete solutions. The text is aimed at students in the last two years of an undergraduate program in mathematics. It contains some rather advanced topics suitable for specialized courses at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level, as well as interesting topics for a senior thesis. The prerequisites have been deliberately limited to basic elements of projective geometry and abstract algebra. Thus, for example, some knowledge of the geometry of subspaces and properties of fields is assumed. The book will be welcomed by teachers and students of algebraic geometry who are seeking a clear and panoramic path leading from the basic facts about linear subspaces, conics and quadrics to a systematic discussion of classical algebraic varieties and the tools needed to study them. The text provides a solid foundation for approaching more advanced and abstract literature.

Book Three dimensional Geometry and Topology

Download or read book Three dimensional Geometry and Topology written by William P. Thurston and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every mathematician should be acquainted with the basic facts about the geometry of surfaces, of two-dimensional manifolds. The theory of three-dimensional manifolds is much more difficult and still only partly understood, although there is ample evidence that the theory of three-dimensional manifolds is one of the most beautiful in the whole of mathematics. This excellent introductory work makes this mathematical wonderland remained rather inaccessible to non-specialists. The author is both a leading researcher, with a formidable geometric intuition, and a gifted expositor. His vivid descriptions of what it might be like to live in this or that three-dimensional manifold bring the subject to life. Like Poincaré, he appeals to intuition, but his enthusiasm is infectious and should make many converts for this kind of mathematics. There are good pictures, plenty of exercises and problems, and the reader will find a selection of topics which are not found in the standard repertoire. This book contains a great deal of interesting mathematics.
