Book excerpt: The following Lectures, delivered in the Cathedral of Louisville, were intended to exhibit, in a plain and straightforward manner, the principal Evidences of the Catholic Church. To every lover of the Christian Religion it must be apparent, on sufficient examination, that the Evidences which sustain Catholicity are substantially identical with those which establishChristianity itself. The scope of these Lectures is to establish this identity. In point of fact, Catholicity and Christianity werethe same thing during the first fifteen centuries of the Christian era; and to every one who will carefully and candidly examine the question in all its bearings, it must become manifest that this identity has continued down to our own day, and that it will continue to the end of time.

Book excerpt: Professor Holifield locates the southern theologians in their broader American setting and in the context of European debates about reason, revelation, science, and moral philosophy. He thus explores a wide range of topics that clarify the history of southern--and American--religion: the presuppositions of liberalism and the logic of conservatism; the influence of Scottish Common-Sense Philosophers, British theologians, and German Biblical critics; the foundations and functions of southern social ethics; the didactic uses of ritual; and the continuing effort of nineteenth-century theologians to demonstrate the reasonableness of both the Christian religion and the whole natural order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chance of Salvation offers a history of conversions in the United States which shows how religious identity came to be a matter of choice. Shortly after the American Revolution, people in the United States increasingly encountered an expanded array of religious options. Evangelical Protestants began an effort to convert Americans, while developing new practices that emphasized conversion as an immediate choice. Their missionary effort extended to Native American nations such as the Cherokee in the Southeast, who received Christianity on their own terms. Enslaved and newly freed African Americans likewise created a variety of Christian conversion that was centered on religious hope and eschatological expectation. Mormons, drawing on earlier Protestant practices and beliefs, enthusiastically proselytized for a new tradition that emphasized individual choice and free will. By uncovering the way that religious identity is structured as an obligatory decision, this book explains why Americans change their religions so much, and why the United States is both highly religious in terms of religious affiliation and very secular in the sense that no religion is an unquestioned default.--
