Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 2 By spiritual death I mean the entire loss in the soul of those principles of holiness which fitted man originally for fellowship with God as his chief joy, his happiness, his life. It is death to all those spiritual sensibilities of holy love which constituted the blessedness of the paradisaical life while man remained in his innocence, and a consequent total incapacity for the functions and enjoyments of that life. By temporal death I mean, of course, the dissolution, by whatever means effected, of the soul and the body, and the corruption of the latter in the grave, its return to the dust from which it was taken. By death eternal, I understand what is called in Scripture "the second death," the everlasting misery of the future state. A few remarks will be necessary on each of these. I. Against the idea of spiritual death being included in the curse, two objections have been urged - (1.) It has been alleged that spiritual death is nothing more than sin, and that this is therefore to make sin its own penalty; and by supposing God to inflict it makes Him its author. But here there is a double mistake. Is there no difference between falling into sin, and being left, in consequence, to a permanently depraved state of soul, a state of alienation from God and of incapacity for enjoying Him? The only question is: - Whether, in consequence of the original transgression, the nature of man was left in this state? That it was, we formerly endeavoured at great length to prove, from Scripture and from facts. Now, if this was a consequence, what else could it be than a penal and judicial consequence? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 To a mind such as that of my late revered father, the epistle TO the romans could not fail to present peculiar attractions; and to the study of it he devoted a large measure of time and attention. Of such study these Lectures are a result. They were delivered to the people of his charge - most if not all of them twice - during the course of his ministry. It was his design to publish them, and they were in part prepared for the press. This is the main ground for their finding a place in this Series. The same law which renders the woman inseparable from the man as long as he lives, sets her free from this subjection as soon as he dies. In the first proposition the emphasis is on the word gay - n, living; in the second, on the words: if he be dead. The precept Deut. Xxiv. 2 expressly authorized the marriage of a woman put away by her first husband with a second and a fortiori, a new marriage after the first husband was dead. If, in the first proposition, the apostle does not speak of the ease of divorce, it is because he is referring to. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans, Vol. 4 Theology has its steeps and its altitudes - pin nacles far out of sight, or shooting upwardly to heaven till lost in the cloudy envelopment which surrounds them. Yet this does not hinder that there should be a most distinct and discernible path which winds around its basement, and by which the lowliest of Zion's travellers may find an ascending way, that at length when the toils of his pilgrimage are ended, will land him in a place of purest transparency, where he shall know even as he is known. There are some whose vision can carry them more aloft among the heights of ardu ous speculation. Yet let none be discouraged for there is a way of duty that may be practised and of doctrine that may be understood which is accessible to all - a way the entrance upon which requires but the union of a desirous heart with a doing hand - a union this that is often realized by the veriest babe in intellect; who, wholly unable though he be to scan the awful mysteries of a pre destinating God, yet can lift the prayer both of affection and confidence, while looking to Him in the more legible as well as more lovely aspect of a God that waiteth to be gracious. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 2: A Practical Exposition There would be no need for a preface to this second volume were it not that a very kindly and careful review of the first volume in The Guardian of May 24 last, requires a word of notice. The reviewer warns me off 'the dialogue system of exegesis.' Now no doubt this principle, like every other, may be abused. 'The Jewish objector' may, as the reviewer complains, be allowed to 'run riot.' Still I cannot doubt that the Jewish objector is a reality of an illuminative kind in the argument of such passages as Romans iii. 1-8, or the great passage (ix-xi), to which the first part of this volume is devoted. Of the other points of detail noticed by the reviewer - which a volume of this kind is not the place to discuss - many are confessedly doubtful, and some unimportant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures, Explanatory and Practical: On the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans The Epistle, which it is the object of the fol lowing Lectures to explain, may be regarded as forming, in some respects, the most important part of the Sacred Writings. For though all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and we are bound to acknowledge the same divine autho rity in every portion of the sacred volume; yet it by no means derogates, either from the perfection of the Scriptures, or from the honour of that Spirit under whose immediate influence they were writ ten, to ascribe to some parts a superior excellence and importance, and to conceive of others as hav ing only a subordinate use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exposition of the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 2: With Remarks on the Commentaries of Dr. Macknight, Professor Moses Stuart, and Professor Tholuck In reference to justification in particular, how wonderful is the contrast between the justifica tion of which this Apostle treats, and the justi fication which critical ingenuity has often ex torted from his epistles While Paul speaks of the believer as possessing a righteousness per fectly commensurate to all the demands of the law, and standing at the bar of God spotless and blameless, human wisdom has contrived to exhibit his doctrine as representing salvation to be the result of a happy combination of mercy and merit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures: Doctrinal and Practical on the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Romans The following Lectures are the result of a close and constant study of the epistle, during many years, and have been composed, not for any particular con gregation, but for the general use of the Christian public. The author is fully conscious, that, divest ing himself Of all manner of prepossession and undue bias, he has endeavoured to ascertain, and to give, the true meaning Of the apostle, by the most careful, persevering, and candid, critical examination of his words, in the language, m which he wrote. He has, of course, attentively and diligently perused the most approved critics, commentators, and other writers, on the epistle; and, while he has seen the clearest and most convincing reasons for deviating from the opinions Of some authors Of name and weight, he has the satisfaction to think, that, on all essential points, he agrees with the most learned, able, and candid, writers on the epistle, ancient and modern, that the Christian Church has produced. He has the' testimony of his heart, that his motive, in composing and publishing the Lectures, is, the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
