Excerpt: ... lecture ii sensation and affection: the criteria of affection the psychology of feeling, as I said in the introduction to the preceding Lecture, is in a notoriously unsettled state. We have psychologists of the first rank who posit an elementary affective process alongside of sensation; we have psychologists of the first rank who deny the distinction. Wundt and Lipps stand over against Brentano and Stumpf.1 I propose, now, in the present hour, to examine the principal arguments that have been urged in favour of an independent feeling element, and the arguments that have been brought forward in reply. I shall use the term 'affection' for the elementary process in question, and for the sake of clearness I shall speak only of the qualities of pleasantness and unpleasantness. These, of course, are recognised by all psychologists alike, --by those who hold a plural as well as by those who hold a dual theory of affective processes at large. What we may call the gross reason, the obvious reason, for assuming an affective element is, I suppose, the gross and obvious difference between the intellectual processes of the adult mind, on the one hand, and the emotive processes, on the other. As thought differs from emotion, so must the element of thought, the sensation, differ from the element of emotion, the affection. Personally, I attach more weight to this argument than its formal expression might seem to warrant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Experimental Psychology of the Thought-Processes In a course of lectures on the elementary psychology of Feeling and Attention, published last year, I remarked that "the system of psychology rests upon a threefold foundation: the doctrine of sensation and image, the elementary doctrine of feeling, and the doctrine of attention." This statement, which formed the basis of my whole discussion, was promptly challenged by reviewers. I was misled, they affirmed, by a sensationalistic bias; I should have taken account of current experimental work upon the thought-processes; I had no right to assume that all intellection is imaginal in character. I could not but acknowledge the essential justice of this criticism, although I could not either accept my critics' point of view. I was, indeed, engaged in writing a brief defence of psychological sensationalism, when I received an invitation to deliver a series of lectures at the University of Illinois. Here was an opportunity, of which I gladly availed myself, to treat in some little detail of the recent experimental contributions to the psychology of thought. The present volume is the result. He argues that doxastic sentimentalism, therefore, is considerably more central to modern epistemology than philosophers have recognized. When the empirical psychology of overconfidence and attention is brought to bear on the history of philosophy and the phenomenology of believing, all point toward belief as fundamentally affective. Understanding believing as feeling has the potential to make us better believers, both by encouraging suspicion of unexamined certainties and by focusing attention on credulity. Hickerson argues that believing is typically felt but not given attention by the believer, and he suggests that virtuous believers are those who pay careful attention to their own sentiments-- who attempt to raise their beliefs to the level of judgments.
