Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System: Especially in Women The case to which I drew your attention at my last clinic is here again, a girl, rather wanting in the signs of sexual ripeness, although sixteen years old. You will recall the fact that she lost the use of the right arm because of having been alarmed. The scare brought on what every woman knows as an attack of hysterics - our ancestors called it the vapors. The girl cried and laughed by turns, and then had a slight fit, on coming out of which she could no longer lift her right arm, or rather she could lift it but a few inches. On finding this to be the case, she grew much concerned, and by and by could not lift it at all, the idea that it could not be raised helping, as is apt to be the case, to make the trouble worse. Book Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System Psychology Revivals

Download or read book Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System Psychology Revivals written by J-M. Charcot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991 as part of the Tavistock Classics in the History of Psychiatry series, this re-edition of J-M. Charcot’s Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System provides a unique opportunity to examine the work of one of the last century’s most controversial and admired physicians. Widely esteemed for his work in neuropathology, Charcot was also an innovator in the study of hysteria, making important contributions to its study in both women and men. The Clinical Lectures reproduced here are especially important for two key reasons. First, they provide insight into Charcot’s often neglected study of male hysteria, especially traumatic shock, as well as, hysteria among children. Secondly, they give an opportunity to examine his clinical method and style. His presentations and scholarly compilations greatly influenced an entire generation of French and other physicians interested in the study of the ‘unconscious’ during the turn of the century. The introduction, which precedes the work, places the volume in its social, political and historical context. It highlights the key features of the historiographical debate surrounding Charcot, which ranges in scope from the social and intellectual history of the Third Republic through that of early psychoanalysis. It then proceeds with an examination of the key themes – both substantive and methodological – underlying Charcot’s researches, providing both a general entrée into the history of medicine and society in this period, as well as an explication du texte which carefully analyses the lectures themselves.

THE TREATMENT OF OBSTINATE CASES OP NERVOUS EXHAUSTION AND HYSTERIA BY SECLUSION, REST, MASSAGE, ELECTRICITY, AND FULL FEEDING. The lessons I have here gathered together would be incomplete, were I not to add some more detailed statement of my views as to the general treatment of the conditions out of which arise the varied phenomena of hysteria. Nothing, I think, can be more melancholy than an honest survey of the amount of good done in hysteria by the host of drugs which go to form the so-called therapeutics of this disease. In disorders where time is valuable we may find a happy resource in the famous class of antispasmodics, but as a rule they are swiftly disappearing from the apothecary's prescription files, and the physician of our day who is called upon to treat hysteria, or general nervousness or neurasthenia, wisely contents himself with a careful estimate of causes, and an effort to deal with these by patient treatment Perhaps no cases are more common in general practice, none more annoying, and none more dreaded than those of hysteria, in its infinite number of forms and its infinite variety of masquerade. The lighter troubles, the spasms, rigors, nervousness, and curious mental states, which haunt the times of sexual changes in a woman's life, and especially her passage into womanhood, are more or less easily dealt with. A careful study of the girl's character, of her home surroundings, of the incidents ot social life, which come with the development of possible passion, will be the best guide to treatment, and with the obvious indications given us by distinct physical ailments, local or general, constitute our chief resources. But besides these every-day manifestations of hysteria, we meet in practice with a...

Book Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System

Download or read book Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System written by Samuel Wilks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System: Delivered at Guy's Hospital IN presenting this work to my readers, I may fairly be expected to preface it with a few words of explanation. In the year 1868 a part of my course on Medicine delivered at Guy's Hospital relating to nervous diseases was published in a periodical form. Ever since that time the lectures have been frequently perused by my pupils, who have constantly demanded of me their reprint in a separate form. To this appeal, so often made, I now respond in the present volume. It contains my original lectures with the additional matter which a subsequent ten years has enabled me to accumulate. Much of this has already appeared in the Guy's Hospital Reports, ' but its repetition in this volume was inevitable, since it is evident that the cases which have been thought of sum cient importance to publish separately would necessarily be the most valuable ones with which to illustrate my lectures. The order of the subjects which I have found useful for lecture cannot be justified on scientific grounds, but I may console myself with the conviction that with our present existing nomenclature it is impossible to frame a systematic view of nervous diseases on any rational basis whatever, be it anatomical, pathological, or clinical. I have therefore endeavoured to make the best of a heterogeneous system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
