Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Atonement The Atonement is certainly the greatest topic that can occupy our thoughts, because it is the central feature of God's Fatherhood, the central purpose of the life of Jesus Christ, the central object of the ceaseless and unsleeping energy of God the Holy Spirit in the Church. We will begin with the plain meaning of the word. I know no cause to doubt the simple derivation that Atonement is At-one-ment - the removal of all hindrances to perfect unity. That is the problem God has set before Himself to solve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Atonement: Six Lectures Given in Westminster Abbey The investigation Will be found to exhibit one frequent principle of revelation - that a spiritual idea is first given to mankind in a very simple and, perhaps, a material shape then, as religious insight quickens, it is challenged and discussed and repudiated, and, in consequence, this and that part of it is spiritualised and lifted to a higher plane, until at last the old idea is re established, only not in its first material form, but in a form altogether spiritual. We shall find this principle illustrated in regard to certain great ideas Which underlie the doctrine of Atone ment. The first is the solidarity of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement: Viewed in the Light of Certain Modern Difficulties, Being the Hulsean Lectures for 1883, 1884 It has also appeared probable that intelligent laymen who have not much acquaintance with the Classics, might be glad to meet with a hand-book on the subject which demanded no very deep acquaintance with the dead languages, or the technicalities of theology. With this view the majority of passages cited from early authors (those who wrote in Greek especially) have been trans lated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anselm's Theory of the Atonement: The Bohlen Lectures, 1908 Not all the varying formulations of theology can claim to express the essential and ultimate truth, and we are forced to separate these historical varia tions from the truth itself. In different ages, differ ent aspects and understandings of truth come to be emphasised and made prominent, owing sometimes to their denial and the subsequent controversy, and sometimes to the prevalence of ideas which inhere in the intellectual conditions of the age. When we discern the contemporary causes for a particular state ment, we are led to inquire whether it be a natural and inevitable inference from truths hitherto awaiting. Coordination; as, for example, in the Nicene defini tions concerning the deity of our Lord. At other times, however, we are compelled to discriminate be tween the original and permanent essence of a truth and the temporary and imperfect interpretation of it. The mere systematic statement of a doctrine, therefore, is of little value until the formula has been subjected to the criticism based upon the history of its successive stages. The scholastic spirit is the exact opposite of the critical and historical spirit but the latter is the spirit of our time, and its method is our accepted method of arriving at the truth. Download or read book Lectures on the Doctrine of Atonement written by J. Scott Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Doctrine of Atonement: With an Appendix The following passages from the Sacred Scriptures will form a fitting introduction to the consideration of the Scripture Doctrine of Atonement: - Exodus xxxiv., 4-7. And Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto Mount Sinai, as Jehovah had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. And Jehovah descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of Jehovah. And Jehovah passed by before him, and proclaimed, "Jehovah! Jehovah is a God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity, and transgression, and sin." Isaiah Iv., 6, 7. Seek ye Jehovah while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto Jehovah, and He will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. Jeremiah xxvi., 2, 3. Thus saith Jehovah - "Stand in the court of the house of Jehovah, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the house of Jehovah, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word: if so be that they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way: that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them, because of their evil doings." Ezekiel xviii., 21-23. If the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. Have I any pleasure at all that tho wicked should die? saith the Lord Jehovah; and not that he should return from his ways, and live? Xviii., xxxii. Etc. God's Name, or revealed Nature, the hope of sinful men. (3) It is incompatible with the teachings and actions of Christ. The command to forgive imperative, a refusal unpardon able. God's actions must accord with His commands. Anselm's evasive reply. Human forgiveness confirmed in heaven, Matt. Xviii. 18, 20; John xx. 23. Christ's attitude towards Sinners a revelation of God's. (4) It fails to do justice to God's inexorable hatred of sin. Extermination stronger term' than punishment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Day of Atonement, Levitious XVI: With an Appendix on the Chief Errors Recently Current on Atonement But the Day of Atonement necessarily had a temporal and imperfect character; the law made nothing perfect. It was, beyond question, the most solemn act in the whole Jewish year; but the fact of its renewal every year was conclusive evidence, as the Epistle to the Hebrews declares, of its ineffi cacy for conscience as well as for God in view of eternity. It was therefore provisional, as all the institutions of the law were. Is this any impeachment of God's law P It is H is own word that pronounces it. If so, you will allow God to be a better judge than you are, or I, or all men. If God declares that the law made nothing perfect - and such is His expressed and irrevocable sentence (heb. Vii. 19) - who with the least reverence for God can question it for a moment Therefore the provisional atonement year by year for Israel on its face had what did not rise up to the perfection of God's nature, character, and mind. At best it could be but a shadow of the grace and truth that came by Jesus Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Idea of Atonement in Christian Theology

Download or read book The Idea of Atonement in Christian Theology written by Hastings Rashdall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of Atonement in Christian Theology: Being the Bampton Lectures for 1915 For all or most educated clergymen and laymen, in our own Church at least, a fundamental revolution has been effected by the abandonment of the older theories of biblical inspiration and an entirely altered attitude towards the biblical account of creation and the early history of the Jewish people. These changes cannot be without their influence upon our interpretation of dogmas and doctrines which grew up under the influence of the earlier conceptions. And yet it is quite possible that the old formulae may be re interpreted without more violence to their original meaning than they have suffered over and over again during the past history of doctrinal development. Indeed in many cases, the kind of re-interpretation that is needed is simply a return to some earlier stage in the development of the traditional theology, though in others it will involve a continuation of some line of development to which the Church is already more or less deeply committed. The present work deals only with one department, or (better) one aspect, of the traditional theology - with what is technically known as the doctrine of the work of Christ as distinct from the doctrine of His Person. My object has been to examine the traditional doctrine of "salvation" through Christ - in particular of salvation through the sufferings and death of Christ - and the closely connected theories as to the way in which the salvation brought into the world by Christ is to be appropriated by the individual soul. This has involved some treatment of the "doctrine of grace," and, indeed, has occasionally led me into various other departments of theology; but I have tried to confine myself as much as possible to the questions which centre round the doctrine of the atonement. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Doctrine of the Atonement This brief history of the doctrine of the Atonement is an attempt to fill a gap in a literature already voluminous. It is the outcome of a series of lectures given to theological students, in the course of which I found the difficulty of referring my pupils to any book which made the sources accessible in a systematic manner. I have tried to meet this need by using quotation as far as possible, and by giving the zlosissima verba of the original Greek or Latin in footnotes throughout. The quotations are usually taken from current translations, but I have sometimes made my own version. There is no pretence at completeness, which would demand a far larger treatise, but it is hoped that no considerable development has been ignored, and that sufficient comment has been introduced to make the history both readable and consecutive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Holy Scripture: Respecting the Atonement The Atonement is a pure matter of revelation. Whether as regards the truths which it embodies, the principles on which it rests, or the ends to which it is conducive, we have no reliable means of in formation beyond what God has been pleased to give us in His word. In approaching such a subject our question ought ever to be, What is written in the Scriptures How readest thou Nor can we be too careful lest we advance any position but such as, on full and fair inquiry, has been found to be either expressly set down in the Holy Scriptures, or by good and necessary consequence deducible from them. Accordingly, I have chosen the inductive in pre ference to the ordinary dogmatic method of dis cussing this important subject, believing the former method to be not only the more satisfactory to an intelligent inquirer, but at the same time the more consistent with that reverence which is due to the oracles of God. Download or read book The Spiritual Principle of the Atonement written by John Scott Lidgett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Principle of the Atonement: As a Satisfaction Made to God for the Sins of the World, Being the Twenty-Seventh Fernley Lecture, Delivered in Leeds, July, 1897 In sending forth this volume, a word of apology is necessary. Those who know the constant pressure and the unceasing round of practical duties which are inseparable from the headship of a Settlement among the poor will be aware under what difficulties this book has been produced. I can hardly hope to have altogether avoided falling into mistakes which greater leisure would have enabled me to detect. The treatment of the subjects dealt with in chapters vi. and vii. is necessarily incomplete. To have attempted an exhaustive consideration would have been to transgress the limits imposed upon the writer. But some discussion both of our Lord's ethical perfection and of His relationship to the human race was demanded, if only to exhibit clearly the general point of view from which, throughout this Lecture, the Atonement has been regarded. I cannot refrain from expressing here my sense of the great debt which, under God, I owe to Dr. W. B. Pope for any light that has been given to me upon the meaning of our Lord's death. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief.
