Book Lectures on Psychology for Teachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Psychology for Teachers Classic Reprint written by Arthur B. Morrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Psychology for Teachers As you will see from the outline I have placed on the blackboard, there are three phases of the work of teaching, namely, in struction, repetition or drill, and testing or recitations. Hearing a recitation is only one part of teaching. In many schools the teachers fail to do the more important parts of teaching, namely the instruction and drill parts. Now some truths of psychology are needed in order to realize when a teacher ought to instruct, and when she ought to drill. Some teachers are wasting time because they do not know this. I venture to say that when we go out into the schools and find a good teacher, she -is oftengood because she is an expert in drill. Some times we need to give instruction and some times we need to drill. It depends upon the subject we are teaching. Psychology will make plain to you when you must drill and when you must instruct. Now let me give you an illustration to make plain what I mean when I say that sometimes we should have a minimum amount of knowl edge and a maximum amount of drill, and sometimes a maximum amount of knowledge and a minimum amount of drill. Take for example riding a bicycle. How much knowl edge does it require? It is practice that it is needed here. In three minutes a person can tell all that is required to know how to ride a bicycle. The man who, when asked if he could play a violin said that he did not know, he had never tried, suggested this truth. The knowl edge part of playing the violin is not very great; it is necessary to repeat, - repetition is the important feature. Download or read book Practical Lessons in Psychology Classic Reprint written by William O. Krohn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Lessons in Psychology Within the past year the author has, at various institutes and other gatherings of teachers, delivered lectures on Psychology, chiefly on those phases that must and do come in for a large share of consideration on the part of every successful teacher. The speculative form which Psychology sometimes assumes found no place in those discussions, but only such features as are quite in touch with the ordinary experience of the average teacher in our common schools. The writer was surprised, and at the same time very much gratified, at the intense interest they evoked. At the solicitation of a large number of these same teachers, the lectures have accordingly been gathered together, and, with slight modifications and the advantage of much addi tional material, are now presented in book form. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Psychology for Teachers During the last decade a marked interest in the scientific study of education has developed. One of the results Of this increased interest and more intensive study is the addi tional requirement of educational psychology in all teacher training courses. Many laymen, indeed, have become inter ested in educational processes to a degree greater than ever before. Much that may be legitimately treated in a course in general psychology is Of purely academic interest and has no value for education. Therefore some topics that appear in works on general psychology are not included here. This book has been written for this ever-widening public the young teachers who wish to get a right start in their pro fession by becoming acquainted with the principles of the subject; the Older teachers who wish to have the results of experiment and research that have met with most favor; and that great number of persons interested in the subject of edu cation who have faith in the boys and girls of to-day and wish to have a part in making them the worthy Citizens of to-morrow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Psychology for Teachers: Revised Certain principles have been established as fundamental to good teaching. Theoretically, all psychologists are agreed that a course of study should proceed from the known to the unknown and from the concrete to the general; that students should learn by doing; that the problem or project method of teaching is superior to memorization of a textbook; that functional not faculty psychology should be taught; that individual differences in students should be taken into account; that a beginning course should be designed for the benefit of the great majority who never go farther; etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Talks on Psychology

Download or read book Talks on Psychology written by A. S. Welch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Psychology: Applied to Teaching for Teachers and Normal Institutes This little book on the elements of applied Psychology has been written for the sole purpose of helping the teacher in preparing for more effective work in the school-room. Many instructors in our common and graded schools are familiar with the branches they teach, but deficient in knowledge of the mental powers whose development they seek to promote. But no proficiency in science or art that does not include the study of mind, can ever qualify the student for the work of the teacher. He must comprehend fully not only the objects studied by the learner, but the efforts put forth in studying them, the effect of these efforts on the faculty exerted, and their results in the form of accurate knowledge. How can the teacher deal successfully with these fundamental facts of Psychology, without having first mastered them himself? Indeed, it is urged by eminent educators everywhere that a knowledge of the branches to be taught, and a knowledge of the mind to be trained thereby, are equally essential to successful teaching. Permit me to add a few suggestions as to the method you pursue in studying the subjects presented in this small volume. Download or read book Lessons in Psychology Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Helen Hannahs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Psychology Though it has not been customary to follow the plan of the lesson-unit in teaching above the grades, I have ventured to arrange my material according to it, since that material is for the most part elementary. And long experience has confirmed my Opinion that it is helpful in all work in the classroom to follow in Spirit, at least, each day the general plan Of the three steps of preparation, pre scutation, and application. In using the lessons in the classroom teachers will find many of them as given too long for one day's work. A week is not too much time to spend in reaching, for example, the law of associations here developed in the first lesson. For the formulation of this law pupils will be interested to trace in class and outside many trains of association and to talk about them familiarly as they do about the facts of nature or mathematics. And in most of the subjects, indeed, pupils may spend profitably a much longer time than one lesson in watching, giving, and discussing their experience before they are led to generalize. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks to Teachers, on Psychology: And to Students Dents on Some of Ideals I wish I were able to make the second, 'on a Cer tain Blindness in Human Beings, ' more impressive. It is more than the mere piece Of sentimentalism which it may seem to some readers. It connects itself with a definite View Of the world and Of our moral relations to the same. Those who have done me the honor Of reading my volume Of philosophic essays will recognize that I mean the pluralistic or individualistic philosophy. According to that philos Ophy, the truth is too great for any one actual mind, even though that mind be dubbed 'the Absolute, ' to know the whole Of it. The facts and worths Of life need many cognizers to take them in. There is no point Of view absolutely public and universal. Pri vate and uncommunicable perceptions always remain over, and the worst Of it is that those who look for them from the outside never know where. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Childhood and Youth: Outlines of Thirty Lectures The basal subject of study for teachers must always be children. They are to pedagogy what anatomy and physiology are to medicine, or what soils, plants, and ani mals are to agriculture. But the genesis of children's minds must also interest parents and all those who care for the development of human nature. The object of this course of lectures is to outline the results of the more re cent individual and group studies on the physical, mental, moral, social, aesthetic, and religious life of childhood and youth. The lectures will also seek to make educational applications of the generalizations reached, to the home, the school, and to society at large. Book Notes in Psychology on Lectures Supplementary to James Psychology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes in Psychology on Lectures Supplementary to James Psychology Classic Reprint written by Joseph Jastrow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes in Psychology on Lectures Supplementary to James' Psychology The presentation to large classes in a limited period of a survey of topics in Psychology most important for introductory study requires all the pedagogical aids that can be made available. The instructor must select his material, bringing to the teaching an indi vidual emphasis, and inevitably supplementing the text in the process. The generous use of demonstra tions and charts and diagrams Within the lecture hour makes large draughts upon the student's attention and interferes With his notes. The present notes are the result of these conditions. The problems of Sense Perception are considered the standard ones for the beginning student; a comprehension of principles is regarded as fundamental. It seems better to carry a few problems to a fair degree of completeness than to attempt too broad a survey. Moreover, as these notes are supplementary to James' Psychology, they must be considered along With the text, to restore the proper perspective. Points satisfactorily covered by the text receive no comment or restatement. It has been found impracticable to include in lectures (twice a week for one semester) much of the material of the latter half of the text. The notes will be used by the author in an introductory manual in preparation, the Copyright of Which is held by Henry Holt co. Book Psychology for Teachers Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology for Teachers On the comments of another critic I may be allowed to say a few words, since they may serve to elucidate my point of View. The child when he comes under the discipline of the teacher, even in the kindergarten, has already reached a certain level of mental develop ment; he has gained some experience; he behaves in more or less appropriate ways under given circum stances; he already possesses a good deal of intelligence although he has but little systematic knowledge. Why not start with him as he then stands? Why trouble to inquire how this practical and serviceable experience had its origin in the early months or years of life? The teacher, as such, it may be said, has little concern with it. He may take its existence for granted. Such is the contention of my critic. I think it not im probable that others may, in some degree, share his views. They may feel some impatience with my genetic treatment of the initial stages of the dawn of child consciousness, and the very beginnings of the mental life. But it must be remembered that the process of develop ment is one and continuous. It is impossible adequately to understand its later phases if the earlier stages are merely taken for granted. If once the principle of taking things for granted is admitted, we, so far, depart from the more rational principle of explaining matters. In every branch of inquiry which deals with continuity of process it has been found that the initial stages cannot be disregarded if the develop ment as a whole is to be rendered clear. If we just accept the child as he is when he comes to school, without inquiring how he came to be what he already is, we shall not be in a position to understand how best to graft the systematic knowledge with which we are chie y concerned on the naive experience with which it should be in vital touch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology for Teachers: With Suggestions on Method for Use in High Schools and Teachers Institutes The work is presented to the educational public in the belief that it is a clearer and simpler statement of the principles or laws which govern mental develop ment than is found in the elementary texts now before the public. The book, however, is not a series of baby-talks on psychology and. Method. The presenta tion of a subject which requires no thinking on the part of the reader is worthless for educational pur poses. As often as the limits of the book would per mit, the writer has quoted from psychologists and educators to reinforce his convictions.
