Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Pastoral Theology There is danger, however, that in our theological seminaries, both the study and the practice of pastoral duties will be compara tively n.eglected In the ardor of their literary and theological pur suits, there IS danger that young men will overlook those important lessons on this subject which they will be called so soon to reduce to practice. The teachers in our seminaries should-be' aware of this danger, that they may the more effectually guard against it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures in Pastoral Theology The general subject of the course of lectures in Pastoral Theology the present year will be: The Pastor in Relation to the Activities of the Church. A congregation is to be viewed as a band of work ers in the Lord's vineyard with the pastor at the head. In the upbuilding of the Kingdom of God, the pastor is to be not only a builder, but a wise master-builder whose business it is to lay out the work and direct the efforts of the workmen. For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. (mark xiii, There is a vast amount of unused moral power in the church to - day, and the minister who can call out this latent talent and direct it into channels of useful service confers an immense bless ing on the workers and gives a mighty impulse to the work. Book Six Lectures on Pastoral Theology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Lectures on Pastoral Theology: With an Appendix on the Influence of Scientific Training on the Reception of Religious Truth The following Lectures were written for, and delivered to, young University laymen who were contemplating Holy Orders. The Appendix is a dissertation, not a lecture, on a different but kindred subject on which I had been requested to write. The Lectures and Appendix have been written piecemeal, amid the stress of varied and constant work, and this must be the apology for their style. The selection of subjects was partly made for me, as will be seen by reference to the footnote on p. 4. But the treatment of them has been mainly determined by conversation and correspondence for years past with young laymen and clergy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastoral Theology of the New Testament MY object in these lectures is not only to furnish you with definite rules and directions for the discharge of pastoral duty, but more especially to show you how you ought. Yourselves to study and use the Scriptures, in the service of which you are called one day to labour, in the interests of your calling and from its point of view. This is the more important because otherwise theological study moves in the sphere of the abstract, training neither the spiritual nor the mental powers for the life-work of the ministry - that is, for a real and not merely a formal discharge of it. Owing to this defect in their training we find that ministers in the discharge of their professional duty get into habits of work which very often do not go beyond a mechanical routine; alongside of a lifeless theology there arises a. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastors and Teachers: Six Lectures on Pastoral Theology; Delivered in the Divinity School, Cambridge, in the Year 1902I. They recall us to the principle involved in the practice of infant baptism. The Church does not baptise infants indiscriminately. She requires sponsors for their religious education; and the sponsors represent the responsibility of the Church for the infants who are being baptised. It is not too much to say that to baptise infants without real provision for their being brought up to know what their religious profession means, tends to degrade a sacrament into a charm. On this point we need the most serious reflection.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country Clergyman and His Work: Six Lectures on Pastoral Theology Delivered in the Divinity School, Cambridge, May Term, 1889 I Have been asked to speak to you on the subject of Pastoral Work in the Country, in other words, on the Country Clergyman, and his Work. It has been thought, and not without reason, that the towns have had their full share of attention throughout these Lectures on Pastoral Theology. For most assuredly the town clergyman of the present day, young or old, has no lack of external helps in the way of "Pastoralia." These have been given in full measure from the lips, and hearts, and lives, of my predecessors. It may not even now be a fulness unto satiety, but there need be no complaint of starvation. I am here then to contribute what I may towards making the scale even. Not indeed that there is any antagonism between the two great ministerial provinces. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Christian Theology This was a state of things which Spener de plored. Others before him, especially pious lay men, had noticed these evils, but had withdrawn, like the mystics of a former period, and sought in private contemplation that satisfaction of their spiritual wants which they could not obtain from the learned jargon of the pulpit; or if, like An dreas and Arndt, they had lifted up a voice of rem onstrance against the prevailing disorders, it had been drowned in the noise of angry pole mics. But the reputation and influence of Spener were too great to allow his remonstrances to pass unnoticed. Without aiming at the name, he performed the work of a reformer. In the unpretending form of a preface to an edition of Arndt's Sermons, he published in 1675 his Pia Desidert'a, in which he urged the necessity of amending the prevailing mode of instruction and preaching. It was his great object to divert attention from the symbols, and direct it to the scriptures. He wished every student to derive his system for himself directly from the Bible; and to feel and enjoy the truths thus learned, rather than contend about them; and especially he wished the teachers in the universities, and the preachers in the desk, abandoning for ever their foolish questions and subtle dialectics, to labour to promote the solid instruction and the true piety of those committed to their charge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 2 of 4 When we speak of truth as one of his perfections, we as sume, that the communications which have been made by him to men accord with the nature of things, and are genuine ex pressions of his views and intentions. Falsehood consists in designed misrepresentation of the subject of discourse, and in creating expectations which we do not mean to realize, in affirming that that is which is not, and that we will do what we have resolved not to do. There are different ways in which God has made declarations to us; by our senses, by reason, and by revelation. On each of these we shall bestow some observations and with respect to the last, in which we are so deeply concerned, I shall consider the doctrines which it proposes to our faith, the promises which awaken our hopes, the threatenings which are addressed to our fears, and shew that these, as well as the invitations, entreaties, and expostu lations with which the Scriptures abound, are characterised by veracity and sincerity. Book The Public Ministry and Pastoral Methods of Our Lord Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Public Ministry and Pastoral Methods of Our Lord Classic Reprint written by William Garden Blaikie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Ministry and Pastoral Methods of Our Lord The present volume bears on a department of the life of our Lord to which, amid all that has been written lately, very little attention has been given I trust therefore it will be found to supply a want, and will prove useful not only to ministers of the Gospel, but to all who take part in Christian service. A considerable portion of the volume has formed part of the author's lectures on Homiletical and Pastoral Theology, delivered to the students of the New College, Edinburgh. Coming in as that subject does at the very close of a four years' theological course, my aim there is not so much to impart knowledge, as to communicate to the students a tone and practical impulse. For this purpose one of the best means is the study of the Public Ministry and Pastoral Methods of our Lord. I have found the subject grow in my hands from year to year, till it has come to be out of proportion to the other parts of the course; and though the present volume has a measure of completeness, I know well that there are many other parts of the life of Christ that may yield similar lessons. This volume is in some sense a sequel to my book, For the Work of the Ministry: a Manual of Homiletical and Pastoral Theology. 'on another side it has a connection with my Glimpses of the Inner Life of our Lord. May the three prove a threefold cord, each adding to the effect of the other two, and all contributing, under the Divine blessing, to build up the kingdom of God.
