Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Painting and Design Finding in early life, the great want of a concise course of anatomical investigation by a painter, and fit only for a painter's use, I have endeavoured in these lectures to supply that deficiency, taking John Bell's admirable work on the bones and muscles as my guide, and adding all I had ascertained from dissection and reference to the' antique, rejecting what belongs ex elusively to the surgeon, and omitting no internal muscle which affects the external shape. It is hoped the student will be pleased to have his road shortened; for, although my own pupils have always had the advantage of this method, it is only now for the first time placed before the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Painting: Delivered at the Royal Academy The following six Lectures of Fuseli, who held for many years the situations of Professor of Painting and Keeper of the Royal Academy, now published for the first time, are printed verbatim from his manuscripts. I considered that (as Executor to his Will), in doing this, I should best meet the views of the deceased and the wishes of the Public, rather than in acting upon any opinions of my own, by using the pruning knife; for I am well aware that a few of the notions and some of the expressions may be found, from his pen, in other places. But to have omitted these would have injured the general argument, and severed the chain of his reasoning. With such feelings, the Lectures now appear without any omission or emendation on my part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interdependence of the Arts of Design: A Series of Six Lectures, Delivered at the Art Institute of Chicago Take an extreme instance, -the works of James Whistler, who died a few months ago. It was my business to obtain such analysis of his work as could be had by artists, especially by painters. We have in the United States a number Of painters who write admirably well on matters of painting. Seven or eight names arise at once in the memory of one who is conversant with the whole field, names Of men who are simply excellent critics in this, the most approved and most popular form of the arts of design. And those men, though they feel themselves unable to speak of a brother painter while he is yet alive, - Of him or of his works, will yet consent to write or speak about the works of him who has gone, and who is beyond the reach of injury by any possible jealousy or personal disapproval. But in the case of Whistler there was this insuperable difficulty to be met on the threshold - the difficulty that not one of the painters whom I consulted had seen enough of Whistler's work to dare to Speak of it. His black and-white productions, his etchings, his. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interdependence of the Arts of Design: A Series of Six Lectures Delivered at the Art Institute of Chicago; Being the Scammon Lectures for 1904 There is constant demand for critical treatment of contemporary fine art, - a demand which takes strange forms and is sometimes peremptory. Writers on the prin ciples of fine art are continually asked to stop discussing the arts of old times and to consider those of the present day. There is, however, a very serious hindrance to one who would gratify that demand, and here lies the difficulty: very recent works of fine art have not yet become well known to any one. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... VI TECHNIQUE Technique--I dislike the word but can find no precise equivalent for it--is that element of the art of painting which has the least reliance upon the observation of nature. The subject of a picture may be some place or event actually seen by the artist; the design may be suggested by something in nature or may even be wholly copied from some felicitous natural arrangement; the drawing, the light and shade, the coloring, however modified by the artistic intention, must be more or less imitative or representative. Nature may decide for the artist what he shall paint, but she has no voice in determining how he shall paint it. The means at the artist's disposal, the tools he uses and his methods of employing them, are decided by the history and traditions of his art. On the purely technical side a piece of painting is good or bad as any other piece of craftsmanship is good or bad, according as it employs its tools and materials to the best advantage and for the intrinsic beauty of the material result, making a skin of oil paint as beautiful as it can be made. But modern art has almost entirely lost the feeling for beautiful workmanship, as well as the knowledge of how to produce it. Of all the traditions of painting which were destroyed by the pseudo-classic revolution the technical tradition was the most thoroughly annihilated; and the modern artist has had to experiment and guess in the effort to rediscover the admirable methods of the older masters, or to muddle through without any method at all, relying upon the closeness of his observation of nature to take the place of any mastery of his materials. We have even so far forgotten what real technical beauty is, that if any man paints with a big brush and a certain swagger of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to paint more like Manet and less like Jackson Pollock? Students of art hailed Classical Drawing Atelier, Juliette Aristides’s first book, as a dynamic return to the atelier educational model. Ateliers, popular in the nineteenth century, teach emerging artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. The educational process begins as students copy masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. The many artists at every level who learned from Classical Drawing Atelier have been clamoring for more of this sophisticated approach to teaching and learning. In Classical Painting Atelier, Aristides, a leader in the atelier movement, takes students step-by-step through the finest works of Old Masters and today’s most respected realist artists to reveal the principles of creating full-color realist still lifes, portraits, and figure paintings. Rich in tradition, yet practical for today’s artists, Classical Painting Atelier is ideal for serious art students seeking a timeless visual education.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of England: Lectures Given in Oxford I am now alike comforted in having left you, and encouraged in return; for on all grounds it was most desirable that to the imperfect, and yet in many points new and untried code of practice which I had instituted, the foundations of higher study should have been added by Mr. Richmond, in connection with the methods of art-education recognized in the Academies of Europe. And although I have not yet been able to consult with him on the subject, I trust that no interruption of the courses of figure study, thus established, may be involved in the completion, for what it is worth, of the system of subordinate exercises in natural history and landscape, indicated in the schools to which at present, for convenience' sake, my name is attached; but which, if they indeed deserve encouragement, will, I hope, receive it ultimately, as presenting to the beginner the first aspects of art, in the widest, because the humblest, relation to those of divinely organized and animated Nature.
