In Germany men of science and theologians look upon one another with a mutual contempt, while in this country scientific men entertain respect for theologians, and the latter fortunately have a profound admiration for students of science, and (when properly educated) have not the effrontery to combat the teachings of pure inductive science. In Germany, too, science is used as a political engine to overthrow the arrogant assumptions of kingcraft and priestcraft, from the evil in uence of which we now in England suffer little.
