The eight lectures are an "anticipation" of my magnum opus-I guess when one has passed into his sixties he can be forgiven for saying this! a much larger volume (or volumes) to be titled Toward an Abstract Performance Grammar. The book in your hands is an anticipation of this work in at least three senses: for one thing, it doesn't pretend to cover the burgeoning literature relevant to the comparatively new field of psycholinguistics (my study at home is literally overflowing with reference materials, aU coded for various sections of the planned vol ume(s»; for another, both the style and the content of these Lectures were tailored to a very broad social science audience -including students and teachers in anthropology, linguistics, philosophy and psychology (as well as in various applied fields like second language learning and bilingualism); and for yet another thing, many sections of the planned magnum opus are hardly even touched on here-for example, these lectures do not "anticipate" major sections to be devoted to Efficiency vs.

Adams argues that these tours were a central aspect of nineteenth-century authorship, at a time when authors were becoming celebrities and celebrities were international. Spanning the years from 1834 to 1904, Adams’s book examines the British lecture tours of American authors such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Mark Twain, and the American lecture tours of British writers that include Harriet Martineau, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, and Matthew Arnold. Adams concludes her study with a discussion of Henry James, whose American lecture tour took place after a decades-long absence. In highlighting the wide range of authors who participated in this phenomenon, Adams makes a case for the lecture tour as a microcosm for nineteenth-century authorship in all its contradictions and complexity.

Our over riding impression is that the field has come a long way since the earlier work of the 1950s and 1960s, and that the field has emerged with a renewed strength from a difficult period in the 1970s. Not only are the theoretical issues more sharply defined and integrated with existing issues from other domains ("modularity" being one such example), but the experimental techniques employed are much more sophisticated, thanks to the work of numerous psychologists not necessarily interested in psycholinguistics, and thanks to improving technologies unavailable a few years ago (for instance, eye-trackers). We selected papers that provide a coherent, overall picture of existing techniques and issues. The volume is organized much as one might organize an introductory linguistics course - beginning with sound and working "up" to mean ing. Indeed, the first paper, Rebecca Treiman's, begins with considera tion of syllable structure, a phonological consideration, and the last, Alan Garnham's, exemplifies some work on the interpretation of pro nouns, a semantic matter. In between are found works concentrating on morphemes, lexical structures, and syntax. The cross-section represented in this volume is by necessity incom plete, since we focus only on experimental work directed at under standing how adults comprehend and produce language. We do not include any works on language acquisition, first or second.
