Book Low Carbon Energy in Africa and Latin America

Download or read book Low Carbon Energy in Africa and Latin America written by Ricardo Guerrero-Lemus and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of energy sectors in emerging African and Latin American nations, providing a one-stop source of information and analysis of energy sectors that differ radically from those of developed countries. It focuses on how indigenous energy sources can be used within a systems framework to enhance each nation’s economic prosperity, secure their energy future and reduce global carbon emissions. It begins by examining the current energy trends in Africa and Latin America, and the constraints that current practices place on meeting future energy needs. Further chapters present a deeper analyses of each technology adapted to these regions and a description of 94 selected case examples recently published in the scientific literature (2014-2016) and covering almost all countries to highlight energy experiences that could serve as engines for developing low-carbon energy technologies across the two regions. These issues are elucidated by a large number of illustrations and tables to offer valuable insights into the topics and technologies discussed. The book enables students, researchers and professionals in energy to better understand the energy context in Africa and Latin America, and helps define strategies for supporting these regions in introducing low-carbon energy technologies that supplement indigenous sources in a manner that enhances long-term economic prosperity. It is also intended for consulting companies and government agencies involved in the energy sector, as well as environmental science and energy management students.

Book Sustainable Development in Africa

Download or read book Sustainable Development in Africa written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves the purpose of documenting and promoting African experiences on sustainable development, which encompasses both, formal and non-formal education. Sustainable development is very important to Africa, but there is a paucity of publication which documents and promotes experiences from African countries. Due to their complexity, the interrelations between social, economic and political factors related to sustainable development, especially at universities, need to be better understood. There is also a real need to showcase successful examples of how African institutions are handling their sustainability challenges. It is against this background that this book has been produced. It is a truly interdisciplinary publication, useful to scholars, social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies and private companies, undertaking research and/or executing projects focusing on sustainability from across Africa. As African nations strive to pursue the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it is imperative to cater for the information needs seen across the continent and foster the dissemination of experiences and case studies, which may support both, on-going and future efforts. The scope of the book is deliberately kept wide, and we are looking for contributions across the spectrum of sustainable development from business and economics, to arts and fashion, administration, environment, languages and media studies.

Book Narratives of Low Carbon Transitions Open Access

Download or read book Narratives of Low Carbon Transitions Open Access written by Susanne Hanger-Kopp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the uncertainties underlying various strategies for a low-carbon future. Most prominently, such strategies relate to transitions in the energy sector, on both the supply and the demand side. At the same time they interact with other sectors, such as industrial production, transport, and building, and ultimately require new behaviour patterns at household and individual levels. Currently, much research is available on the effectiveness of these strategies but, in order to successfully implement comprehensive transition pathways, it is crucial not only to understand the benefits but also the risks. Filling this gap, this volume provides an interdisciplinary, conceptual framework to assess risks and uncertainties associated with low-carbon policies and applies this consistently across 11 country cases from around the world, illustrating alternative transition pathways in various contexts. The cases are presented as narratives, drawing on stakeholder-driven research efforts. They showcase diverse empirical evidence reflecting the complex challenges to and potential negative consequences of such pathways. Together, they enable the reader to draw valuable lessons on the risks and uncertainties associated with choosing the envisaged transition pathways, as well as ways to manage the implementation of these pathways and ultimately enable sustainable and lasting social and environmental effects. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars, and practitioners of environmental and energy policy, low-carbon transitions, renewable energy technologies, climate change action, and sustainability in general.

Book Independent Power Projects in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Independent Power Projects in Sub Saharan Africa written by Anton Eberhard and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inadequate electricity services pose a major impediment to reducing extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity in Sub-Saharan Africa. Simply put, Africa does not have enough power. Despite the abundant low-carbon and low-cost energy resources available to Sub-Saharan Africa, the region s entire installed electricity capacity, at a little over 80 GW, is equivalent to that of the Republic of Korea. Looking ahead, Sub-Saharan Africa will need to ramp-up its power generation capacity substantially. The investment needed to meet this goal largely exceeds African countries already stretched public finances. Increasing private investment is critical to help expand and improve electricity supply. Historically, most private sector finance has been channeled through privately financed independent power projects (IPP), supported by nonrecourse or limited recourse loans, with long-term power purchase agreements with the state utility or another off-taker. Between 1990 and 2014, IPPs have spread across Sub-Saharan Africa and are now present in 17 countries. Currently, there are 125 IPPs, with an overall installed capacity of 10.7 GW and investments of $24.6 billion. However, private investment could be much greater and less concentrated. South Africa alone accounts for 67 IPPs, 4.3 GW of capacity and $14.4 billion of investments; the remaining projects are concentrated in a handful of countries. The objective of this study is to evaluate the experience of IPPs and identify lessons that can help African countries attract more and better private investment. At the core of this analysis is a reflection on whether IPPs have in fact benefited Sub-Saharan Africa, and how they might be improved. The analysis is based primarily on in depth case studies, carried out in five countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda, which not only have the most numerous but also among the most extensive experience with IPPs.

Book Energy Subsidy Reform in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Energy Subsidy Reform in Sub Saharan Africa written by Mr.Trevor Serge Coleridge Alleyne and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reform of energy subsidies is an important but challenging issue for sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. There is a relatively large theoretical and empirical literature on this issue. While this paper relies on that literature, too, it tailors its discussion to SSA countries to respond to the following questions: Why it is important to reduce energy subsidies? What are the difficulties involved in energy subsidy reform? How best can a subsidy reform be implemented? This paper uses various sources of information on SSA countries: quantitative assessments, surveys, and individual (but standardized) case studies.
