Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Elementary Mathematics The present work, which is a translation of the Leçons élémentaires sur les mathematiques of Joseph Louis Lagrange, the greatest of modern analysts, and which is to be found in Volume VII. of the new edition of his collected works, consists of a series of lectures delivered in the year 1795 at the Ecole Normale, - an institution which was the direct outcome of the French Revolution and which gave the first impulse to modern practical ideals of education. With Lagrange, at this institution, were associated, as professors of mathematics, Monge and Laplace, and we owe to the same historical event the final form of the famous Géométrie descriptive, as well as a second course of lectures on arithmetic and algebra, introductory to these of Lagrange, by Laplace. With the exception of a German translation by Niedermüller (Leipsic, 1880), the lectures of Lagrange have never been published in separate form; originally they appeared in a fragmentary shape in the Séances des Ecoles Normales, as they had been reported by the stenographers, and were subsequently reprinted in the journal of the Polytechnic School. From references in them to subjects afterwards to be treated it is to be inferred that a fuller development of higher algebra was intended, - an intention which the brief existence of the Ecole Normale defeated. With very few exceptions, we have left the expositions in their historical form, having only referred in an Appendix to a point in the early history of algebra. The originality, elegance, and symmetrical character of these lectures have been pointed out by DeMorgan, and notably by Dühring, who places them in the front rank of elementary expositions, as an exemplar of their kind. Book excerpt: Lectures on Elementary Mathematics: Large Print By Joseph Louis Lagrange One of the eighteenth century's greatest mathematicians, Lagrange made significant contributions to all fields of analysis and number theory. He survived the French Revolution to deliver these lectures in 1795 at the École Normale, a training school for teachers. An exemplar among elementary expositions, Lagrange's talks feature both originality of thought and elegance of expression. The five lectures begin with discussions of arithmetic that focus on fractions and logarithms as well as theory and applications. Subsequent talks consider algebra, with emphasis on the resolution of equations of the third and fourth degree, the resolution of numerical equations, and the employment of curves in the solution of problems. Students, teachers, and others with an interest in mathematics will find this volume a unique reading book in mathematics, with fascinating historical and philosophical remarks by a distinguished mathematician. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book Elementary Mathematics from a Higher Standpoint

Download or read book Elementary Mathematics from a Higher Standpoint written by Felix Klein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes constitute the first complete English translation of Felix Klein’s seminal series “Elementarmathematik vom höheren Standpunkte aus”. “Complete” has a twofold meaning here: First, there now exists a translation of volume III into English, while until today the only translation had been into Chinese. Second, the English versions of volume I and II had omitted several, even extended parts of the original, while we now present a complete revised translation into modern English. The volumes, first published between 1902 and 1908, are lecture notes of courses that Klein offered to future mathematics teachers, realizing a new form of teacher training that remained valid and effective until today: Klein leads the students to gain a more comprehensive and methodological point of view on school mathematics. The volumes enable us to understand Klein’s far-reaching conception of elementarisation, of the “elementary from a higher standpoint”, in its implementation for school mathematics./div This volume II presents a paradigmatic realisation of Klein’s approach of elementarisation for teacher education. It is shown how the various geometries, elaborated particularly since the beginning of the 19th century, are revealed as becoming unified in a new restructured geometry. As Klein liked to stress: “Projective geometry is all geometry”. Non-Euclidean geometry proves to constitute a part of this unifying process. The teaching of geometry is discussed in a separate chapter, which provides moreover important information on the history of geometry teaching and an international comparison.
