Book Elementary Lectures on Electric Discharges

Download or read book Elementary Lectures on Electric Discharges written by Charles Proteus Steinmetz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lectures on Electric Discharges: Waves and Impulses, and Other Transients In the following I am trying to give a short outline of those phenomenon which have become the most important to the electrical engineer, as on their understandings and control depends the further successful advance of electrical engineering. The art has now so far advanced that the phenomena of the steady flow of power are well understood. Generators, motors, transforming devices, transmission and distribution conductors can, with relatively little difficulty, be calculated, and the phenomena occurring in them under normal conditions of operation predetermined and controlled. Usually, however, the limitations of apparatus and lines are found not in the normal condition of operation, the steady flow of power, but in the phenomena occurring under abnormal though by no means unfrequent conditions, in the more or less transient abnormal voltages, currents, frequencies, etc.; and the study of the laws of these transient phenomena, the electric discharges, waves, and impulses, thus becomes of paramount importance. In a former work, "Theory and Calculation of Transient Electric Phenomena and Oscillations," I have given a systematic study of these phenomena, as far as our present knowledge permits, which by necessity involves to a considerable extent the use of mathematics. As many engineers may not have the time or inclination to a mathematical study, I have endeavored to give in the following a descriptive exposition of the physical nature and meaning, the origin and effects, of these phenomena, with the use of very little and only the simplest form of mathematics, so as to afford a general knowledge of these phenomena to those engineers who have not the time to devote to a more extensive study, and also to serve as an introduction to the study of" Transient Phenomena." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Calculation of Transient Electric Phenomena and Oscillations The following work owes its origin to a course of instruction given during the last few years to the senior class in electrical engineering at Union University and represents the work of a number of years. It comprises the investigation of phenomena which heretofore have rarely been dealt with in text-books but have now become of such importance that a knowledge of them is essential for every electrical engineer, as they include some of the most important problems which electrical engineering will have to solve in the near future to maintain its thus far unbroken progress. A few of these transient phenomena were observed and experimentally investigated in the early days of electrical engineering, for instance, the building up of the voltage of direct-current generators from the remanent magnetism. Others, such as the investigation of the rapidity of the response of a compound generator or a booster to a change of load, have become of importance with the stricter requirements now made on electric systems. Transient phenomena which were of such short duration and small magnitude as to be negligible with the small apparatus of former days have become of serious importance in the huge generators and high power systems of to-day, as the discharge of generator fields, the starting currents of transformers, the short circuit currents of alternators, etc. Especially is this the case with two classes of phenomena closely related to each other: the phenomena of distributed capacity and those of high frequency currents. Formerly high frequency currents were only a subject for brilliant lecture experiments; now, however, in the 6 wireless telegraphy they have found an important industrial use. Book Transients for Electrical Engineers

Download or read book Transients for Electrical Engineers written by Paul J. Nahin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a concise introduction to the analysis of electrical transients aimed at students who have completed introductory circuits and freshman calculus courses. While it is written under the assumption that these students are encountering transient electrical circuits for the first time, the mathematical and physical theory is not ‘watered-down.’ That is, the analysis of both lumped and continuous (transmission line) parameter circuits is performed with the use of differential equations (both ordinary and partial) in the time domain, and the Laplace transform. The transform is fully developed in the book for readers who are not assumed to have seen it before. The use of singular time functions (unit step and impulse) is addressed and illustrated through detailed examples. The appearance of paradoxical circuit situations, often ignored in many textbooks (because they are, perhaps, considered ‘difficult’ to explain) is fully embraced as an opportunity to challenge students. In addition, historical commentary is included throughout the book, to combat the misconception that the material in engineering textbooks was found engraved on Biblical stones, rather than painstakingly discovered by people of genius who often went down many wrong paths before finding the right one. MATLAB® is used throughout the book, with simple codes to quickly and easily generate transient response curves.

Book Electric Transients

Download or read book Electric Transients written by Carl Edward Magnusson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Transients Transient electric phenomena generally increase in commercial importance with the size and complexity of electric systems, and a knowledge of the fundamental principles of electric transients and their application to the solution of quantitative problems is as essential to the successful operation of large power and communication systems as a mastery of the basic laws of direct and alternating currents. This work is an outline of an introductory lecture and laboratory course given during the past twelve years to electrical engineering students in the University of Washington. The purpose of the book is to aid the student in gaining clear concepts of the fundamental principles of electric transient phenomena and their application to quantitative problems. The course as outlined is professedly of an elementary character with emphasis placed on the physical properties of electric transients. The text is illustrated and supplemented by a large number of oscillograms of transients that occur in the various types of machines and electric circuits in common use in electrical engineering laboratories. The problems are based on quantitative data obtained from laboratory experiments under circuit conditions that may easily be reproduced by the student. Quantitative laboratory work is essential in order to readily gain insight into the physical nature of transient electric phenomena. It is advisable to require the student to devote at least two-thirds of the time allotted to a course in electric transients to the taking of oscillograms. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Calculation of Transient Electric Phenomena and Oscillations A second variable, distance, also enters into many of these phenomena; and while the theory of alternating-current appara tus and phenomena usually has to deal only with functions of one independent variable, time, which variable is eliminated by the introduction of the complex quantity, in this volume we have frequently to deal with functions of time and of distance. We thus have to consider alternating functions and transient functions of time and of distance. The theory of alternating functions of time is given in Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena. Transient functions of time are studied in the first section of the present work, and in the second section are given periodic transient phenomena, which have become of industrial importance, for instance, in rectifiers, for circuit control, etc. The third section gives the theory of phenomena which are alternating in time and transient in distance, and the fourth and last section gives phenomena transient In time and In distance. Download or read book General Lectures on Electrical Engineering written by Charles Proteus Steinmetz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Lectures on Electrical Engineering In the eight years since the earlier editions of "General Lectures on Electrical Engineering" appeared, material changes have taken place in the electrical industry. Electricity has made enormous forward strides, until it now seems destined to become the universal medium of the world's energy, through the agency of huge power generating systems. The small electric generating stations and the machinery used in them, arc rapidly disappearing before the substations of the unified power system. The carbon-filament incandescent lamp, after holding sway for a quarter of a century, has become of mere historical interest, and the mazda lamp has taken not only the place of the carbon-filament incandescent lamp, but to a great extent of the arc lamp as well, so that the industrial importance of arc lighting has greatly decreased as compared with that of incandescent lighting. As a result of these and many other developments, the preparation of the fifth edition required material changes and additions to the previous text. A large part of the book has been entirely rewritten, so that as it now stands it differs materially from the previous editions.
