Book Lectures on Efficiency

Download or read book Lectures on Efficiency written by Herbert N. Casson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Efficiency: A Series of Six Lectures Delivered The Lectures on Efficiency here printed were delivered by Mr. Herbert N. Casson, an undoubted authority on this subject, with a wide experience in two Continents, to the members of our staff of both works and offices at Newton Heath. I hope they will be carefully read and considered by those who heard them, as well as by those who were unable to be present. Mr. Casson deals with various problems on broad principles, principles which underlie all manufacturing and commercial enterprises. He presents to us facts in connection with our every-day activities which are often ignored or considered unimportant factors of efficiency. Little or no attempt is made to indicate the precise application of these principles to the details of our own business, that being left to the initiative of each individual member of the staff according to the needs of his particular case. Most of us are probably aware of the facts- many of them axioms-which Mr. Casson lays down, but there will still remain for all of us new methods of application from which we cannot fail to obtain lasting benefit. Book Computer Architecture Techniques for Power efficiency

Download or read book Computer Architecture Techniques for Power efficiency written by Stefanos Kaxiras and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, power dissipation has become an important design constraint, on par with performance, in the design of new computer systems. Whereas in the past, the primary job of the computer architect was to translate improvements in operating frequency and transistor count into performance, now power efficiency must be taken into account at every step of the design process. While for some time, architects have been successful in delivering 40% to 50% annual improvement in processor performance, costs that were previously brushed aside eventually caught up. The most critical of these costs is the inexorable increase in power dissipation and power density in processors. Power dissipation issues have catalyzed new topic areas in computer architecture, resulting in a substantial body of work on more power-efficient architectures. Power dissipation coupled with diminishing performance gains, was also the main cause for the switch from single-core to multi-core architectures and a slowdown in frequency increase. This book aims to document some of the most important architectural techniques that were invented, proposed, and applied to reduce both dynamic power and static power dissipation in processors and memory hierarchies. A significant number of techniques have been proposed for a wide range of situations and this book synthesizes those techniques by focusing on their common characteristics.

Book God s Hotel

Download or read book God s Hotel written by Victoria Sweet and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria Sweet's new book, SLOW MEDICINE, is on sale now! For readers of Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air, a medical “page-turner” that traces one doctor’s “remarkable journey to the essence of medicine” (The San Francisco Chronicle). San Francisco’s Laguna Honda Hospital is the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God’s hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves—“anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times” and needed extended medical care—ended up here. So did Victoria Sweet, who came for two months and stayed for twenty years. Laguna Honda, relatively low-tech but human-paced, gave Sweet the opportunity to practice a kind of attentive medicine that has almost vanished. Gradually, the place transformed the way she understood her work. Alongside the modern view of the body as a machine to be fixed, her extraordinary patients evoked an older idea, of the body as a garden to be tended. God’s Hotel tells their story and the story of the hospital itself, which, as efficiency experts, politicians, and architects descended, determined to turn it into a modern “health care facility,” revealed its own surprising truths about the essence, cost, and value of caring for the body and the soul.
