Book excerpt: The Indian National Science Academy on the occasion ofthe Golden Jubilee Celebration (Fifty years of India's Independence) decided to publish a number of monographs on the selected fields. The editorial board of INS A invited us to prepare a special monograph in Number Theory. In reponse to this assignment, we invited several eminent Number Theorists to contribute expository/research articles for this monograph on Number Theory. Al though some ofthose invited, due to other preoccupations-could not respond positively to our invitation, we did receive fairly encouraging response from many eminent and creative number theorists throughout the world. These articles are presented herewith in a logical order. We are grateful to all those mathematicians who have sent us their articles. We hope that this monograph will have a significant impact on further development in this subject. R. P. Bambah v. C. Dumir R. J. Hans-Gill A Centennial History of the Prime Number Theorem Tom M. Apostol The Prime Number Theorem Among the thousands of discoveries made by mathematicians over the centuries, some stand out as significant landmarks. One of these is the prime number theorem, which describes the asymptotic distribution of prime numbers. It can be stated in various equivalent forms, two of which are: x (I) K(X) '" -I - as x --+ 00, ogx and Pn '" n log n as n --+ 00. (2) In (1), K(X) denotes the number of primes P ::s x for any x > O.

Book excerpt: The New York Number Theory Seminar was organized in 1982 to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent advances in higher arithmetic and its applications. Papers included in this volume are based on the lectures presented by their authors at the Seminar at the Graduate Center of C.U.N.Y. in 1985-88. Papers in the volume cover a wide spectrum of number theoretic topics ranging from additive number theory and diophantine approximations to algebraic number theory and relations with algebraic geometry and topology.

Book Modular Forms and Hecke Operators

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. N. Andrianov
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 2016-01-29
  • ISBN : 1470418681

Download or read book Modular Forms and Hecke Operators written by A. N. Andrianov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: he concept of Hecke operators was so simple and natural that, soon after Hecke's work, scholars made the attempt to develop a Hecke theory for modular forms, such as Siegel modular forms. As this theory developed, the Hecke operators on spaces of modular forms in several variables were found to have arithmetic meaning. Specifically, the theory provided a framework for discovering certain multiplicative properties of the number of integer representations of quadratic forms by quadratic forms. Now that the theory has matured, the time is right for this detailed and systematic exposition of its fundamental methods and results. Features: The book starts with the basics and ends with the latest results, explaining the current status of the theory of Hecke operators on spaces of holomorphic modular forms of integer and half-integer weight congruence-subgroups of integral symplectic groups.Hecke operators are considered principally as an instrument for studying the multiplicative properties of the Fourier coefficients of modular forms. It is the authors' intent that Modular Forms and Hecke Operators help attract young researchers to this beautiful and mysterious realm of number theory.

Book Mathematical Constants II

Download or read book Mathematical Constants II written by Steven R. Finch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famous mathematical constants include the ratio of circular circumference to diameter, π = 3.14 ..., and the natural logarithm base, e = 2.718 .... Students and professionals can often name a few others, but there are many more buried in the literature and awaiting discovery. How do such constants arise, and why are they important? Here the author renews the search he began in his book Mathematical Constants, adding another 133 essays that broaden the landscape. Topics include the minimality of soap film surfaces, prime numbers, elliptic curves and modular forms, Poisson-Voronoi tessellations, random triangles, Brownian motion, uncertainty inequalities, Prandtl-Blasius flow (from fluid dynamics), Lyapunov exponents, knots and tangles, continued fractions, Galton-Watson trees, electrical capacitance (from potential theory), Zermelo's navigation problem, and the optimal control of a pendulum. Unsolved problems appear virtually everywhere as well. This volume continues an outstanding scholarly attempt to bring together all significant mathematical constants in one place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 25-27, 1989, over a hundred mathematicians, including eleven from abroad, gathered at the University of Illinois Conference Center at Allerton Park for a major conference on analytic number theory. The occa sion marked the seventieth birthday and impending (official) retirement of Paul T. Bateman, a prominent number theorist and member of the mathe matics faculty at the University of Illinois for almost forty years. For fifteen of these years, he served as head of the mathematics department. The conference featured a total of fifty-four talks, including ten in vited lectures by H. Delange, P. Erdos, H. Iwaniec, M. Knopp, M. Mendes France, H. L. Montgomery, C. Pomerance, W. Schmidt, H. Stark, and R. C. Vaughan. This volume represents the contents of thirty of these talks as well as two further contributions. The papers span a wide range of topics in number theory, with a majority in analytic number theory.
