Book Bacteria and the Germ Theory of Disease

Download or read book Bacteria and the Germ Theory of Disease written by Henry Gradle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bacteria and the Germ Theory of Disease: Eight Lectures Delivered at the Chicago Medical College The invariable presence of bacteria in all putrefying material suggests their close relation to that process, but whether cause or result - can only be decided by experiment, not by observation alone. The experi mental 'proof, ' however, is so conclusive that it must be accepted as an axiom, that no putrefaction can occur without the presence of bacteria, and that bacteria are the sole and only cause of such decomposition. In order to demonstrate this truth, it has been found most convenient to make use of clear solutions. Of organic substances, for instance infusions of animal or vegetable tissues. All that has been learned in this manner applies equally to the decomposition of the original solid substances, but it is not so con venient to demonstrate it. For in transparent solutions. Bacteria can be detected more readily than on the surface of solids. Moreover the occurrence, or absence, of a turbidity in the previously clear fluid, is so sug gestive of the presence of, or freedom from, bacteria, that the microscope need not be appealed to in every' case. The first and most demonstrative result of such observations has been that putrefaction is arrested by any and all means, which arrest the development of bacteria. For the present let us merely consider the employment of heat for that purpose. Like all other living beings bacteria are killed by a sufficient heat. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. Book The Horace Dobell Lectures on Insect Porters of Bacterial Infection

Download or read book The Horace Dobell Lectures on Insect Porters of Bacterial Infection written by Charles James Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horace Dobell Lectures on Insect Porters of Bacterial Infection: Delivered at the Royal College of Physicians of London, November, 1912 Mr. President, - I would first of all express to you, Sir, and the Censors of the College my appreciation of the honour you have done me in electing me to deliver the Horace Dobell lecture. I feel, however, that it will be impossible for me to do justice to the fine spirit which actuated the founders of the lectureship during their lives' work. To successfully interfere in bacterial diseases of man and animals it is most important to know accurately the life history of the parasite outside the host - how it leaves the old host, how it enters a new host, and where and how it passes the intervening period. If we are in possession of these facts our efforts in the struggle can at any rate be intelligently directed and concentrated against the most vulnerable point of the enemy. The exercise of an adverse influence upon bacteria, once they have gained a footing in the body, has hitherto not been generally successful, although recent developments in chemotherapy have shown that there is ground for Optimism in this direction also. Book On the Relations of Micro Organisms to Disease

Download or read book On the Relations of Micro Organisms to Disease written by William Thomas Belfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Relations of Micro-Organisms to Disease: The Cartwright Lectures, Delivered Before the Alumni Association of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, February 19, 21, 24 and 27, 1883 Fungi - plants which, because devoid of chlorophyll and therefore unable to fabricate the necessary hydro carbons, are usually parasitic upon animal or vegetable tissues, living or dea d - may be divided into three general Classes: 1, the mould fungi (aspergillus varieties, for example), 2, the budding fungi (e. G. The yeast plant); and, 3, bacteria, or dividing fungi. Bacteria were defined in 1875 by Cohn as cells de void Of chlorophyll, of spherical, Oblong, or cylindrical, sometimes twisted or sinuous form, which reproduce themselves exclusively by transverse division and live either isolated or in families. This definition requires to-day but one modification; reproduction, namely, is known to occur in several species, at least by the forma tion and liberation of sp'ores as well as by fission. The bacteria consist of anitrogenous, highly refractive, usually colorless substance, protoplasm or mycoprotein (n enck1) imbedded In which glistening, Oily looking granules can sometimes be Observed. The bacterium exhibits a power Of resistance toward acids and alkalies which could not be possessed by a nitrogenous substance hence it was assumed by Cohn that the external layer is a Sheath of cellulose or similar hydrocarbonaceous material, such as the mould-fungi are known to possess. Although there has been as yet no decisive ocular demonstration Of the existence of this membrane, the reactions of certain spe cies toward straining fluids corroborate the assumption. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Systematic Bacteriology: History, Nomenclature, Groups of Bacteria The present volume is the first of a series of monographs in the general field of systematic bacteriology. The data presented have been collected, compiled and annotated largely in connection with courses of lectures in systematic bacteriology given to graduate students dents in bacteriology at the Iowa State College during the past fif teen years. It is an attempt to bring together material which may prove of value to those who are desirous of knowing the probable nomenclatural status of the various names which have been used in bacterial terminology. If science is to be defined as a system of classified knowledge, the subject of bacteriology is laboring under a serious handicap in lack ing, probably more than any other branch of science, the advantages conferred by a satisfactory system of terminology or of nomenclature. It would seem that systematic bacteriology is deserving of even more recognition at the hands of teachers and investigators than has been accorded to it in the past. Systematic bacteriology has two principal aims or functions which are of importance to the teacher and to the investigator. The first of these aims has to do with the presentation in graphic form of our present conception of the phylogeny and of the relationships of various groups of bacteria. The second is to give a greater degree of stability to the names used for particular groups of organisms and to prevent unnecessary nomenclatural confusion in literature. These aims are thoroughly scientific, their accomplishment will prove useful, we must therefore accord them careful consideration if our nomenclature is to be stabilized. Book Lectures on Biology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Biology Classic Reprint written by Curt Thesing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Biology This book consists of Lectures which were given by me during the winter terms of 1905 to 1907 at the Humboldt Academy and the Urania in Berlin. My object in delivering them was to show that it is no longer possible, having regard to the advances of modern research, to find complete satisfaction in being an out-and-out believer in the Darwinian or Lamarckian or any other theory. Each of these doctrines has rendered important service in promoting our knowledge, but the marks of their limitations have of recent years become increasingly distinct. The factors which the different doctrines assume to be at work in the genesis and evolution of the organic world are, however, not exclusive, for the Theory of Selection, the Doctrine of Adaptation and of Use and Non-use, and finally de Vries' Theory of Mutations, offer each for a certain section of organic evolution a sufficient and satisfactory explanation. That, on the other hand, a vast field of vital processes remains still hidden and unexplained only dogmatic prejudice will venture to deny. If I have succeeded in conveying to a wider circle this conception of conflicting theories, and if I have further succeeded in showing that incomprehensible does not mean impossible to comprehend, my object in publishing these Lectures in book form has been attained. Book Physiology of Bacteria Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physiology of Bacteria Classic Reprint written by Otto Rahn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of Bacteria By confining the discussion to the indispensable functions of the simplest forms of life, I hope to arouse an inter est for this kind of work not only among bacteriologists, but among plant and animal physiologists as well. While practically all the discussion in the book refers to bacteria, the principles developed reach beyond the domain of bacteriology, and apply to biology generally. More than that, I believe that some of the principles of biology can be found and studied only with the simplest forms of life, and that general physiology has much to learn from the physiology of bacteria. This book is not intended to be a review of literature on the subject. Such compilations exist already in the books mentioned above. It contains a number of unpublished experiments made with the object of deciding certain doubtful points in physiology. The work is meant to be critical. I have tried to present all theories, and to mention their strong and weak points. To counterbalance any personal view point, each chapter and subchapter contains a summary, usually separated according to facts and theories.
