Book excerpt: This thin volume contains three sets of lecture notes, representing recent developments in differential scales, o-minimality, and tame convergence theory. The first lecture outlines the basics of differential fields, and then addresses topics like differential varieties and tangent bundles, Kolchin's logarithmic derivative, and Manin's construction. The second describes added exponentation, T-convexity and tame extensions, piecewise linearity, the Wilkie inequality, and the valuation property. And the third considers the structure and varieties of finite algebra. No index. c. Book News Inc.

Download or read book Lectures on Algebra written by Shreeram Shankar Abhyankar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a timely survey of much of the algebra developed during the last several centuries including its applications to algebraic geometry and its potential use in geometric modeling. The present volume makes an ideal textbook for an abstract algebra course, while the forthcoming sequel. Lectures on Algebra II, will serve as a textbook for a linear algebra course. The author's fondness for algebraic geometry shows up in both volumes, and his recent preoccupation with the applications of group theory to the calculation of Galois groups is evident in the second volume which contains more local rings and more algebraic geometry. Both books are based on the author's lectures at Purdue University over the last few years.

Book Lectures on Infinitary Model Theory

Download or read book Lectures on Infinitary Model Theory written by David Marker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infinitary logic, the logic of languages with infinitely long conjunctions, plays an important role in model theory, recursion theory and descriptive set theory. This book is the first modern introduction to the subject in forty years, and will bring students and researchers in all areas of mathematical logic up to the threshold of modern research. The classical topics of back-and-forth systems, model existence techniques, indiscernibles and end extensions are covered before more modern topics are surveyed. Zilber's categoricity theorem for quasiminimal excellent classes is proved and an application is given to covers of multiplicative groups. Infinitary methods are also used to study uncountable models of counterexamples to Vaught's conjecture, and effective aspects of infinitary model theory are reviewed, including an introduction to Montalbán's recent work on spectra of Vaught counterexamples. Self-contained introductions to effective descriptive set theory and hyperarithmetic theory are provided, as is an appendix on admissible model theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their inception, the Perspectives in Logic and Lecture Notes in Logic series have published seminal works by leading logicians. Many of the original books in the series have been unavailable for years, but they are now in print once again. In this volume, the fifth publication in the Lecture Notes in Logic series, the authors give an insightful introduction to the fascinating subject of the model theory of fields, concentrating on its connections to stability theory. In the first two chapters David Marker gives an overview of the model theory of algebraically closed, real closed and differential fields. In the third chapter Anand Pillay gives a proof that there are 2א non-isomorphic countable differential closed fields. Finally, Margit Messmer gives a survey of the model theory of separably closed fields of characteristic p > 0.

Book Lectures on the Theory of Algebraic Numbers

Download or read book Lectures on the Theory of Algebraic Numbers written by E. T. Hecke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . if one wants to make progress in mathematics one should study the masters not the pupils. N. H. Abel Heeke was certainly one of the masters, and in fact, the study of Heeke L series and Heeke operators has permanently embedded his name in the fabric of number theory. It is a rare occurrence when a master writes a basic book, and Heeke's Lectures on the Theory of Algebraic Numbers has become a classic. To quote another master, Andre Weil: "To improve upon Heeke, in a treatment along classical lines of the theory of algebraic numbers, would be a futile and impossible task. " We have tried to remain as close as possible to the original text in pre serving Heeke's rich, informal style of exposition. In a very few instances we have substituted modern terminology for Heeke's, e. g. , "torsion free group" for "pure group. " One problem for a student is the lack of exercises in the book. However, given the large number of texts available in algebraic number theory, this is not a serious drawback. In particular we recommend Number Fields by D. A. Marcus (Springer-Verlag) as a particularly rich source. We would like to thank James M. Vaughn Jr. and the Vaughn Foundation Fund for their encouragement and generous support of Jay R. Goldman without which this translation would never have appeared. Minneapolis George U. Brauer July 1981 Jay R.

Book Lectures on Algebraic Topology

Download or read book Lectures on Algebraic Topology written by Sergeĭ Vladimirovich Matveev and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2006 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic topology is the study of the global properties of spaces by means of algebra. It is an important branch of modern mathematics with a wide degree of applicability to other fields, including geometric topology, differential geometry, functional analysis, differential equations, algebraic geometry, number theory, and theoretical physics. This book provides an introduction to the basic concepts and methods of algebraic topology for the beginner. It presents elements of both homology theory and homotopy theory, and includes various applications. The author's intention is to rely on the geometric approach by appealing to the reader's own intuition to help understanding. The numerous illustrations in the text also serve this purpose. Two features make the text different from the standard literature: first, special attention is given to providing explicit algorithms for calculating the homology groups and for manipulating the fundamental groups. Second, the book contains many exercises, all of which are supplied with hints or solutions. This makes the book suitable for both classroom use and for independent study.

Book Advances in Algebra and Model Theory

Download or read book Advances in Algebra and Model Theory written by M Droste and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains 25 surveys in algebra and model theory, all written by leading experts in the field. The surveys are based around talks given at conferences held in Essen, 1994, and Dresden, 1995. Each contribution is written in such a way as to highlight the ideas that were discussed at the conferences, and also to stimulate open research problems in a form accessible to the whole mathematical community. The topics include field and ring theory as well as groups, ordered algebraic structure and their relationship to model theory. Several papers deal with infinite permutation groups, abelian groups, modules and their relatives and representations. Model theoretic aspects include quantifier elimination in skew fields, Hilbert's 17th problem, (aleph-0)-categorical structures and Boolean algebras. Moreover symmetry questions and automorphism groups of orders are covered. This work contains 25 surveys in algebra and model theory, each is written in such a way as to highlight the ideas that were discussed at Conferences, and also to stimulate open research problems in a form accessible to the whole mathematical community.
