Book Lectures and Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures and Essays Classic Reprint written by Henry Nettleship and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Essays All the articles in the present volume have appeared in print already, except the lecture on Madvig. This lecture and a fragment of an edition of inonius Marcellus were the only unpublished materials left by Mr. Nettleship in a state ready to be printed as his work. The lecture on Madvig is accordingly printed below: the critical notes on Nonius will appear in the journal of Philology. In editing the papers I have verified all references and quota tions, added a few references and half a dozen notes in square brackets: further changes were obviously out of place. I have to thank Messrs. Rivington Percival, Messrs. Kegan Paul, Trench Co., Mr. Walter Scott, and the editors and publishers of the journal of Philology, the American journal of Philology, and the International journal of Ethics for leave to reprint various essays, as indicated at the commencement of each essay. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Lectures Many of my Shakesperian lectures recently, in some unaccountable way were lost, and I promptly resolved to publish those remaining to avoid a similar disaster. As all of them were published originally in a "weekly," they were rather ruthlessly compressed for reasons of space. Consequently in places the narrative is not as clear and connected as I could desire, but I could not afford the time now to recast them and I appeal to the clemency of the critics. The other articles, originally for the most part lectures, were written recently and deal with topics of the day. Whether there is anything in them of permanent value is for the reader to say. Combining Shakespeare and modern topics in one book may be considered bad taste, but I found it necessary and plead that for pardon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures, Essays, and Sermons Is not this a strange world that runs thoughtlessly on through all this living, speaking loveliness, which seems to point every moment toward the God whose hand is form ing and fashioning all before all eyes? How few there are who seem to have any but a theoretical belief that there is something at work around us besides the trees, the flowers, the clouds, and the sun! We see them at work, and ask no further; ask not who makes them work, who gives them all their loveliness and liberty and life. What should we do but fall down and adore before this visible creation of an invisible and all-pervading Being? Book Scientific Lectures and Essays Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Lectures and Essays I say - facts of any kind whatsoever. If any of my readers should be inclined to say to themselves Geology may be a very pleasant study, but I have no special fancy for it. I had rather learn something of botany, astronomy, chemistry, or what not - I shall answer: By all means. Learn any branch of Natural Science you will. It matters little to me which you learn, provided you learn one at least. But bear in mind, and settle it in your hearts, that you will learn no branch of science soundly, so as to master it, and be able to make use of it, unless you acquire that habit and method of mind which I am trying to teach you in this book. I have tried to teach it you by geology, because geology is, perhaps, the simplest and the easiest of all physical sciences. It appeals more than any to mere common sense. It requires fewer difficult experiments, and expensive apparatus. It requires less previous knowledge of other sciences, Whether pure or mixed; at least in its rudimentary stages. It is more free from long and puzzling Greek and Latin words. It is specially, the poor man's science. But if you do not like it, study something else. Only study that as you must study geology; proceeding from the known to the unknown by observation and experiment. Book Lectures and Essays on Irish and Other Subjects Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures and Essays on Irish and Other Subjects Classic Reprint written by Henry Giles and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Essays on Irish and Other Subjects It is now some years since I began to speak in Boston. Among the first of my efforts, Ireland was my theme. I endeavored, as best as I could, to tell her story. I was heard with generous interest, but it was the story, and not the teller, that inspired it. It was called for throughout the length and breadth of New England; it was repeated in city halls and in village lyceums. Old and young, grave and gay, listened to it with open ears and with eager hearts; and to many of them it seemed a new, and wild, and strange recital. It is no longer novel. It is now, not a story, but a drama; a black and fearful drama, which civilized nations gaze upon with a terrified astonishment, that has no power to weep. It was then gloomy and sad enough, and to those who know life only in its general comforts, it appeared a condition which it would be hard to render worse. But the presumptuousness of man is constantly rebuked by the vicissitude of events. It is but too surely so in this case. There was yet the vial of a deeper woe in store, and that vial is now open. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oberlin Thursday Lectures, Addresses and Essays Many of my pupils have asked that I would publish a small book containing such oi my lectures as were con nected with some of the more interesting experiences of my life. This volume is an attempt to comply, in part, with the wish so expressed. Most of these papers had their place in an institution knowntto all Oberlin students as the Thursday Lectfiy'ei'fi'rfiwd ar'e occasional addresses and for the privilege of reprinting'two others in this col lect'ion, I am indebted to the courtesy of Messrs. Hough ton, Miffiin and Company and the Bibliotheca Sacra Company. The obligation is specially acknowledged in the proper place. The lectures are not printed in the order in which they were delivered, but in the chrono logical order of the events described in them. In this way they become, in a measure and indirectly, auto biographical, which my pupils have expressed a desire that they should be. Some of these lectures were deliv ered as long ago as the early eighties, which will explain the occasional incompleteness in the account of men and events. It has been thought best to leave the lectures substantially as they were presented at the time. This book is dedicated to my pupils as a memorial of the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Series of Lectures Upon Locke's Essay The following Work has been undertaken with considerable reluctance. I have been repeatedly applied to by Dublin Publishers to furnish them with a contraction of Locke's Essay, and have received liberal offers of pecuniary remuneration. Hitherto I have uniformly declined the undertaking, and have been only induced to enter upon the present work, by having ascertained that a spurious contraction, in a catechetical form, is in circulation under my name, sold by the booksellers as mine, and bought as such by the Students. Finding the defects of my own works sufficiently numerous, without being stigmatised with the errors of others, I have, in self defence, attempted these Lectures upon the Essay. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitary and Social Lectures and Essays I have been asked to speak a few words to you on a lady's work in a country parish. I shall confine myself rather to principles than to details; and the first principle which I would impress on you is, that we must all be just before we are generous. I must, indeed, speak plainly on this point. A woman's first duties are to her own family, her own servants. Be not deceived: if anyone cannot rule her own household, she cannot rule the Church of Cod. If anyone cannot sympathise with the servants with whom she is in contact all day long, she will not really sympathise with the poor whom she sees once a week. I know the temptation not to believe this is very great. It seems so much easier to women to do something for tho poor, than for their own ladies' maids, and housemaids, and cooks. And why? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Political, Social, and Religious, and Historical Lectures, Vol. 3 Nora - I have quoted the words Dr. Congreve used in the Preface to the second volume, applying them to the contents of those two volumes: but if as I hope some account of his life, gathered from various sources - from his occasional entries in his diary and from his letters, from the letters of his friends both to him and about him, and from those yet living who were in earliest and closest relation to him - be published, it will be seen how little the purpose of his life changed from its first promise to his latest years. All Dr. Congreve wrote was historical, said one of his most valued friends. Certainly all was social - all was in the service of Man - of Humanity. It denounces the Union, it pleads for Repeal but it does not commit itself to any danger of legal prosecution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Essays The apology offered in the Preface to the first volume of this series for the occurrence of repeti tions, is even more needful here I am afraid. But it could hardly be otherwise with speeches and essays, on the same topic, addressed at intervals, during more than thirty years, to widely distant and different hearers and readers. The oldest piece, that On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences, contains some crudities, which I repudiated when the lecture was first reprinted, more than twenty years ago; but it will be seen that much of what I have had to say, later on in life, is merely a development of the propositions enunciated in this early and sadly imperfect piece of work.
