Download or read book Lecture Notes On Empirical Software Engineering written by Natalia Juristo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-03-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical verification of knowledge is one of the foundations for developing any discipline. As far as software construction is concerned, the empirically verified knowledge is not only sparse but also not very widely disseminated among developers and researchers. This book aims to spread the idea of the importance of empirical knowledge in software development from a highly practical viewpoint. It has two goals: (1) Define the body of empirically validated knowledge in software development so as to advise practitioners on what methods or techniques have been empirically analysed and what the results were; (2) as empirical tests have traditionally been carried out by universities or research centres, propose techniques applicable by industry to check on the software development technologies they use.

Book Empirical Methods and Studies in Software Engineering

Download or read book Empirical Methods and Studies in Software Engineering written by Reidar Conradi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-08-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, societies crucially depend on high-quality software for a large part of their functionalities and activities. Therefore, software professionals, researchers, managers, and practitioners alike have to competently decide what software technologies and products to choose for which purpose. For various reasons, systematic empirical studies employing strictly scientific methods are hardly practiced in software engineering. Thus there is an unquestioned need for developing improved and better-qualified empirical methods, for their application in practice and for dissemination of the results. This book describes different kinds of empirical studies and methods for performing such studies, e.g., for planning, performing, analyzing, and reporting such studies. Actual studies are presented in detail in various chapters dealing with inspections, testing, object-oriented techniques, and component-based software engineering.

Book Perspectives on the Future of Software Engineering

Download or read book Perspectives on the Future of Software Engineering written by Jürgen Münch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependence on quality software in all areas of life is what makes software engineering a key discipline for today’s society. Thus, over the last few decades it has been increasingly recognized that it is particularly important to demonstrate the value of software engineering methods in real-world environments, a task which is the focus of empirical software engineering. One of the leading protagonists of this discipline worldwide is Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dieter Rombach, who dedicated his entire career to empirical software engineering. For his many important contributions to the field he has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award and the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is a Fellow of both the ACM and the IEEE Computer Society. This book, published in honor of his 60th birthday, is dedicated to Dieter Rombach and his contributions to software engineering in general, as well as to empirical software engineering in particular. This book presents invited contributions from a number of the most internationally renowned software engineering researchers like Victor Basili, Barry Boehm, Manfred Broy, Carlo Ghezzi, Michael Jackson, Leon Osterweil, and, of course, by Dieter Rombach himself. Several key experts from the Fraunhofer IESE, the institute founded and led by Dieter Rombach, also contributed to the book. The contributions summarize some of the most important trends in software engineering today and outline a vision for the future of the field. The book is structured into three main parts. The first part focuses on the classical foundations of software engineering, such as notations, architecture, and processes, while the second addresses empirical software engineering in particular as the core field of Dieter Rombach’s contributions. Finally, the third part discusses a broad vision for the future of software engineering.

Book Contemporary Empirical Methods in Software Engineering

Download or read book Contemporary Empirical Methods in Software Engineering written by Michael Felderer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents contemporary empirical methods in software engineering related to the plurality of research methodologies, human factors, data collection and processing, aggregation and synthesis of evidence, and impact of software engineering research. The individual chapters discuss methods that impact the current evolution of empirical software engineering and form the backbone of future research. Following an introductory chapter that outlines the background of and developments in empirical software engineering over the last 50 years and provides an overview of the subsequent contributions, the remainder of the book is divided into four parts: Study Strategies (including e.g. guidelines for surveys or design science); Data Collection, Production, and Analysis (highlighting approaches from e.g. data science, biometric measurement, and simulation-based studies); Knowledge Acquisition and Aggregation (highlighting literature research, threats to validity, and evidence aggregation); and Knowledge Transfer (discussing open science and knowledge transfer with industry). Empirical methods like experimentation have become a powerful means of advancing the field of software engineering by providing scientific evidence on software development, operation, and maintenance, but also by supporting practitioners in their decision-making and learning processes. Thus the book is equally suitable for academics aiming to expand the field and for industrial researchers and practitioners looking for novel ways to check the validity of their assumptions and experiences. Book Product Focused Software Process Improvement

Download or read book Product Focused Software Process Improvement written by Frank Bomarius and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-03-09 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On behalf of the PROFES organizing committee we are proud to present to you the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Product Focused Software Process Improvement (PROFES 2004), held in Kansai Science City, Japan. Since 1999, PROFES has established itself as one of the recognized international process improvement conferences. In 2004 the conference left Europe for the first time and moved to Japan. Japan and its neighboring countries are intensifying their efforts to improve software engineering excellence, so it was a logical step to select Japan as the venue for PROFES 2004. The purpose of the conference is to bring to light the most recent findings and results in the area and to stimulate discussion between researchers, experienced professionals, and technology providers. The large number of participants coming from industry confirms that the conference provides a variety of up-to-date topics and tackles industry problems. The main theme of PROFES is professional software process improvement (SPI) motivated by product and service quality needs. SPI is facilitated by software process assessment, software measurement, process modeling, and technology transfer. It has become a practical tool for quality software engineering and management. The conference addresses both the solutions found in practice and the relevant research results from academia. This is reflected in the 41 full papers, which are a balanced mix of academic papers as well as industrial experience reports.

Download or read book Extreme Programming and Agile Processes in Software Engineering written by Jutta Eckstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software development is being revolutionized. The heavy-weight processes of the 1980s and 1990s are being replaced by light-weight, so called agile processes. Agile processes move the focus of software development back to what really matters: running software. This is only made possible by accepting that software developmentisacreativejobdoneby, with, andforindividualhumanbeings. For this reason, agile software development encourages interaction, communication, and fun. This was the focus of the Fifth International Conference on Extreme P- grammingandAgileProcessesinSoftwareEngineeringwhichtookplacebetween June 6 and June 10, 2004 at the conference center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the foot of the Bavarian Alps near Munich, Germany. In this way the conference provided a unique forum for industry and academic professionals to discuss their needs and ideas for incorporating Extreme Programming and Agile Metho- logies into their professional life under consideration of the human factor. We celebrated this year’s conference by re?ecting on what we had achieved in the last half decade and we also focused on the challenges we will face in the near future.

Book Software Process Improvement

Download or read book Software Process Improvement written by T. Dingsøyr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-01-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the first year that the European Software Process Improvement Conference - EuroSPI - had a separate research track with its own proceedings. The EuroSPI conference is in its eleventh year, and has become the main meeting place in Europe for the software industry and academia to discuss software process improvement. The conference deals with software process improvement in a broad sense, investigating organizational issues as well as methods and tools for software process improvement. Euro SPI is an initiative financed by a consortium of Nordic research centers and user networks(SINTEF, DELTA and STTF), ASQF, a German quality assurance association, and ISCN in Ireland, the coordinating network partner. The research papers describe innovative and significant work in software process improvement, which is relevant to the software industry. The papers are readable for a scientific and industrial audience, and support claims with appropriately described evidence or references to relevant literature. Thirty-one papers were submitted in this year's research track, and each paper was sent to three or four members of the program committee or additional reviewers. Papers were evaluated according to originality, significance of the contribution, quality of the written and graphical presentation, research method applied, and appropriateness of comparison to relevant research and literature. Almost 100 reviews were received and 18 papers were selected for presentation in the research track, giving a rejection rate of 42%. Many high-quality submissions had to be rejected because of limited space in the conference program. The selected papers cover a wide area in software process improvement, from - proving agile development methods, techniques for software process improvement, and knowledge management in software companies to effort estimation and global software development

Book Metrics for Software Conceptual Models

Download or read book Metrics for Software Conceptual Models written by Marcela Genero and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-01-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that “measuring quality is the key to developing high-quality software systems” is gaining relevance. Moreover, it is widely recognised that the key to obtaining better software systems is to measure the quality characteristics of early artefacts, produced at the conceptual modelling phase. Therefore, improving the quality of conceptual models is a major step towards the improvement of software system development. Since the 1970s, software engineers had been proposing high quantities of metrics for software products, processes and resources but had not been paying any special attention to conceptual modelling. By the mid-1990s, however, the need for metrics for conceptual modelling had emerged. This book provides an overview of the most relevant existing proposals of metrics for conceptual models, covering conceptual models for both products and processes. Contents:Towards a Framework for Conceptual Modelling Quality (M Piattini et al.)A Proposal of a Measure of Completeness for Conceptual Models (O Dieste et al.)Metrics for Use Cases: A Survey of Current Proposals (B Bernárdez et al.)Defining and Validating Metrics for UML Class Diagrams (M Genero et al.)Measuring OCL Expressions: An Approach Based on Cognitive Techniques (L Reynoso et al.)Metrics for Datawarehouses Conceptual Models (M Serrano et al.)Metrics for UML Statechart Diagrams (J A Cruz-Lemus et al.)Metrics for Software Process Models (F García et al.)
