Book excerpt: "The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council called for an expansion of the Scripture readings available for the Holy Mass, so that the faithful who participate in the Eucharist might be nourished by a greater number and variety of biblical texts. In response, the Holy See issued the Ordo Lectionum Missae in 1969 and promulgated a revised and expanded second edition in 1981. The four volumes of the current Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, published between 1998 and 2002, are based on that Latin second typical edition. In 2001 and again in 2015, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued updates to the Ordo Lectionum Missae to account for recent changes to the Liturgy of the Roman Rite; an expanded Vigil Mass for Pentecost, celebrations of saints added to the General Roman Calendar, and the addition of new Votive Masses. Revisions to the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America have also taken place, necessitating further changes to the Lectionary. Therefore, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Divine Worship approved the publication of this Lectionary for Mass Supplement in June 2015. Until the publication of a future edition of the Lectionary for Mass, this Supplement will provide a convenient source for the texts of readings for the occasions listed above.
