Book Lectionary Based Gospel Dramas for Lent and the Easter Triduum

Download or read book Lectionary Based Gospel Dramas for Lent and the Easter Triduum written by Sheila O'Connell-Roussell and published by Saint Mary's Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What better way to bring the Gospel alive for teens than through drama? Using reproducible scripts, the dramas in Lectionary-Based Gospel Dramas for Lent and the Easter Triduum "break open" the Gospels for Lent, Holy Week, and Easter, moving the hearts and minds of youth and adults alike. By engaging in these dramas, participants act as catechist, lector, Gospel players, improv artists, small-group leaders, and audience--a unique learning environment that allows young people to be catechists for themselves and for one another. The dramas are powerful yet easy to stage. The leader's role is purposefully minimal, allowing teens to take the leading roles in the production. These dramas have been used successfully in school classrooms, parish religious education programs, youth groups, RCIA catechesis, homiletic reflections at Mass, and retreats. This book contains everything you need to produce ten dramas, including 10 reproducible scripts and 10 full-page icons by Vicki Shuck, which are an essential component for visual learners. Imagine the excitement and learning your teens will experience as they live the Gospel through drama!

Download or read book Imaging the Gospels written by Timothy Ayers and published by CSS Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagining the Gospels: Cycle B Sermons for Lent and Easter Based on the Gospel Texts is the latest from Rev. Timothy W. Ayers. As a pastor who writes his messages while also writing novels, children's books, and short dramas, Rev. Ayers found himself working hard to visually create the picture of what was hap-pening in the gospel accounts. Why? These were people lis-tening to Jesus. They would have had emotions about the topics. They would have had little things they recognized when Jesus spoke about lambs, shepherds, and vines. Much like our congregants, there would be nods of recognition toward experiences in their lives. His goal was to get the listener to imagine themselves, with their feelings, and their rea-sons for being in church, to better use their cognitive skills, inside the stories. At other times, Ayers sought to take them on a week by week journey through the Easter season. He didn't assume they have a relationship with Christ. He didn't assume they are vibrant, serving members of the congregation. He only assumed that the listener is seeking something they do not have. He was attempting to take them one step further on a journey from week to week. At times Rev. Ayers brings humor to the scene in order to lighten the mood of the listener. The body relaxes when we laugh and that helps us to hear the message. Imagining the Gospels hopefully will achieve this. This book will make life easier for any busy pastor during the Lent and Easter season, by providing a sermon for each and every Sunday, when attendance is likely to be at its highest. This book has several intended uses: Sermon ideas Inspirational reading Bible study with individuals or groups Some Sermon Titles Include: Beginning The Lenten Journey (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21) Tearing The Sky To Get To You (Mark 1:9-15) Did I Say That Out Loud? (Mark 8:31-38, Mark 9:2-9) The Road To The Passover (John 2:13-22) A Nod Of Recognition (John 3:14-21) Rev. Timothy W. Ayers recently pastored a small church in western New York. It was his first time working with a smaller body of Christians. After planting churches and working with several larger congregations, he felt the call to minister in a completely different setting. He learned a lot about the limitations of a small congregation. Tim merged two of his past literary mediums of short plays for contemporary churches and children's literature. He combined the styles of his short plays, Living Parables, written to illustrate the Sunday service messages (published by CSS Publishing), and his middle reader series, Spinechillers Mysteries. From these two loves came Five Little Christmas Dramas for Today's Kids. It is Ayers' desire that churches around the world can tell this marvelous story of the birth of our Savior through relevant, fun, and easy-to-produce holiday plays.

Other characters include the Centurion, Simon of Cyrene, the disciples John and Peter, as well as Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus. An additional monologue for Easter sunrise worship dramatizes the angel at the empty tomb waiting for the women to arrive, reflecting on the week's events. How does a pastor open up the story of the Passion of our Lord so that the Holy Spirit might create new and renewed faith in the hearers? Pastor Maurer utilizes the Gospel narratives and imaginative thinking to develop the characters, inviting hearers to ask, "Where am I in this story?" and "What does this crucified Jesus have to do with me?" Book The View from the Cross

Download or read book The View from the Cross written by John W. Clarke and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the enduring legacies of the Revised Common Lectionary is its ability to draw different parts of scripture together to form a coherent narrative, drawing congregations from around the world into the life-changing message of faith in Jesus Christ. Each element of the lectionary brings its own point of view into this message, giving us insights into its origins, the impact on its original hearers, as well as its relevance for our lives today. In the gospel message, we see the drama of Jesus' life and ministry and are challenged to join in it. "The View from the Cross" brings us back to the central image of our faith, the death of Jesus on the cross followed by his victorious resurrection. Drawing on the gospel readings in the Lent and Easter seasons, Dr. Clarke offers a new perspective on the journey of Jesus to Jerusalem and ultimately to Golgotha and the cross. In examining the words and deeds of Christ during this season, we as the church of today can grow in our faith and set out to fulfill the plan God has for us today. This collection of sermons is a valuable resource for: - Sermon starters and illuminating illustrations - Gaining a new homiletical perspective to the lectionary - Offering a newer, deeper understanding and appreciation of scripture - Using as a starter for adult Bible study groups or personal devotions This sermon collection includes: Expectations and a Crown The Gardens of Life Living a Joyful Life ... and many more! Rev. Dr. John W. Clarke is the pastor of the First Congregational Church of Meriden, Connecticut. Book Tears of Sadness Tears of Gladness

Download or read book Tears of Sadness Tears of Gladness written by Albert G. Butzer and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Butzer believes that "sermons should speak to the real and immediate lives of listeners and be grounded in the everyday events of their lives." This collection of sermons for Lent and Easter based on gospel texts definitely achieves that goal; Butzer's messages consistently and creatively deliver a ringing proclamation of the good news. They are outstanding examples of the homiletical art that bring together several elements of the classic sermon: biblical text, theological tradition, life of the world, life and experience of a particular congregation, and faith and experience of the preacher. This is a delightful collection of compassionate, no-nonsense sermons. They may be read as devotional literature by lay people or as models for thoughtful, literate preaching by clergy. Above all, this book is well-honed for Lenten reflection by any Christian group looking for provocative conversation. Joseph M. Webb Associate Professor of Homiletics Claremont School of Theology Butzer's sermons are precisely what thinking preachers want in a lectionary resource -- scholarship with a soul. To the testimonies of the four Evangelists, he engages professors and poets alike: Douglas John Hall, Raymond Brown, Annie Dillard, and Frederick Buechner, to name a few. Butzer's pastoral heart also ensures that one other vital group is engaged: his listeners. Mike Graves Associate Professor of Homiletics and Worship Central Baptist Theological Seminary These sermons represent Butzer's weekly offering of his faith, experience, hope, and passion to his people. As such, they are an act of devotion. And they are an example of preaching at its most basic and most classic. (from the Preface) John M. Buchanan Pastor, Fourth Presbyterian Church Chicago, Illinois Albert G. Butzer III has been pastor of Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, Virginia (a suburb of Washington DC) since 1994. A graduate of Tufts University and Princeton Theological Seminary, Butzer previously served congregations in Illinois and New Jersey. He was the 1992 Moderator of the Chicago Presbytery and was a commissioner to his denomination's General Assembly in 1992 and 1999. Butzer's sermons, essays, and book reviews have appeared in The Christian Ministry, Pulpit Digest, Presbyterian Outlook, and The Journal Of Stewardship. Two of his sermons have received awards in national sermon competitions.
