Book excerpt: Would humans evolve in Dystopia? Would humans devolve in Utopia? There’s no happiness without sadness; there’s no learning without strife. What’s the destination for humanity? An unending cycle of conflicts and peace? It’s going to be a long journey, a winding journey, where we do not crave for sufferings, but opportunities to be the best of ourselves and to face the worst of ourselves, so we can be complete. The ending may be frightening, but we all have an innocent beginning. Dying Innocence is the first Act of Desperia Zero, which is the first book of Desperia Saga. In an era so far in the future that the name of the planet has been forsaken and the calendar of humanity has been reset, an alien cybercity is founded on an artificial island as vast as sky and surrounded by ocean. The citizens of this place are not “born” but wake up, in their synthetic bodies. They call themselves “Human Beings”. And this place is introduced to them as Desperia. Powered by otherworldly technology, Desperia is a Utopia, where food and water and energy will run out, but a Dystopia, as everyone must play a "Game", to reach the heart of this artificial land, where the Ultimate Prize: Truth or Freedom awaits. Only one prize can be claimed...

His shaman, Rayloc, fears the strangers are servants of evil determined to destroy his way of life. Meanwhile, Sotif, History Man of the Alliance between Earth People and Sun People, tries to guard his culture against changes that could induce Mother Earth to withdraw her blessings-while Warlog focuses on severing that alliance, which has lasted for hundreds of generations, by subjugating the Sun People and destroying the Earth People. Faced with this threat, Sotif races to find the Spirit Fire to help his people defeat Warlog. But the key to success lies in the hands of Tincolad, one of Warlog's warriors who has been captured by the Alliance. Book Alberta Oil Sands

Download or read book Alberta Oil Sands written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 170 billion barrels, Canada's Oil Sands are the third largest reserves of developable oil in the world. The Oil Sands now produce about 1.6 million barrels per day, with production expected to double by 2025 to about 3.7 million barrels per day. The Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in northeastern Alberta is the largest of the three oil sands deposits. Bitumen in the oil sands is recovered through one of two primary methods – mining and drilling. About 20 per cent of the reserves are close to the surface and can be mined using large shovels and trucks. Of concern are the effects of the industrial development on the environment. Both human-made and natural sources emit oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, trace elements and persistent organic compounds. Of additional concern are ground level ozone and greenhouse gases. Because of the requirement on operators to comply with the air quality regulatory policies, and to address public concerns, the not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA) has since 1997 been closely monitoring air quality in AOSR. In 2008, WBEA assembled a distinguished group of international scientists who have been conducting measurements and practical research on various aspects of air emissions and their potential effects on terrestrial receptors. This book is a synthesis of the concepts and results of those on-going studies. It contains 19 chapters ranging from a global perspective of energy production, measurement methodologies and behavior of various air pollutants during fossil fuel production in a boreal forest ecosystem, towards designing and deploying a multi-disciplinary, proactive, and long-term environmental monitoring system that will also meet regulatory expectations. - Covers measurement of emissions from very large industrial sources in a region with huge international media profile - Validation of measurement technologies can be applied globally - The new approaches to ecological monitoring described can be applied in other forested regions

Book Innovations in Swarm Intelligence

Download or read book Innovations in Swarm Intelligence written by Chee Peng Lim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-10-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, swarm intelligence has emerged as a powerful approach to solving optimization as well as other complex problems. Swarm intelligence models are inspired by social behaviours of simple agents interacting among themselves as well as with the environment, e.g., flocking of birds, schooling of fish, foraging of bees and ants. The collective behaviours that emerge out of the interactions at the colony level are useful in achieving complex goals. The main aim of this research book is to present a sample of recent innovations and advances in techniques and applications of swarm intelligence. Among the topics covered in this book include: particle swarm optimization and hybrid methods, ant colony optimization and hybrid methods, bee colony optimization, glowworm swarm optimization, and complex social swarms, application of various swarm intelligence models to operational planning of energy plants, modeling and control of nanorobots, classification of documents, identification of disease biomarkers, and prediction of gene signals. The book is directed to researchers, practicing professionals, and undergraduate as well as graduate students of all disciplines who are interested in enhancing their knowledge in techniques and applications of swarm intelligence.

Book Comparison of Chemical Analyses of Refractory Alloys

Download or read book Comparison of Chemical Analyses of Refractory Alloys written by D. L. Chase and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the activities of the Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Subpanel on Analytical Methods in a program initiated in 1960. The panel was formed to study the problems involved in determining interstitial and alloying elements in alloys of tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, and columbium. The objectives of the Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Subpanel on Refractory Metals were (1) to ascertain the agreement between laboratories one could expect in the determinations of interstitial and alloying elements in FS-85, TZM, T-111, and unalloyed tungsten; (2) to establish methods, through close control of variables, which would give results approximating certain goals for agreement between laboratories; and (3) to offer a forum for the interchange of information on techniques, apparatus, etc. The subpanel membership, the participating laboratories, and the complete results of the chemical analyses are presented in this report.
