Book excerpt: Wilford Woodruff (1807-1898) was the fourth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Woodruff joined the Church in late 1833. Within six months, he had moved to Kirtland and joined the Prophet Joseph Smith and others in Zion's Camp. Over the next few years, he served several missions. He was ordained an Apostle in 1839 and became President of the Church two years after John Taylor's death in 1887. Woodruff was an indefatigable diarist. His numerous journals are among the most important primary sources for LDS Church history from the Kirtland era through Utah statehood. This book was released on 2023-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Leaves from My Journal" is a well-known textual content authored via Wilford Woodruff, a pivotal parent within the records of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The tale of this book affords an attractive firsthand account of Wilford Woodruff's experiences, spiritual insights, and critical occasions within the LDS Church's early records. Wilford Woodruff's diary entries, collected and edited on this volume, provide an in depth and intimate point of view on the LDS Church's increase and development over the 19th century. His works element his very own non-secular experience, related to his conversion to Mormonism, missionary movement, and conferences with extra considerable church leaders that consist of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. One of the most giant parts of "Leaves from My Journal" is Woodruff's account of the church's migration to the American West, specifically the perilous experience of the pioneers to Utah. His testimonies of these experiments, in particular the unwell-fated Willie and Martin Handcart Companies, are heartbreaking and substantial in history. Woodruff also provides insights on early Mormon non-secular beliefs and practices, which encompass the significance of temple ordinances and revelations acquired by church leaders, at some point of the book.

Book excerpt: For the first time in a single volume, Jennifer Mackley chronicles the development of temple doctrine and ceremonies over the course of the nineteenth century: from washings and anointings to proxy baptisms, the endowment to plural marriage sealings, the first rebaptism to the last priesthood adoption. After Wilford Woodruff's conversion in 1833, he enthusiastically participated in the ordinances the Prophet Joseph Smith introduced in Kirtland and Nauvoo. However, Joseph was murdered before the implications of the "higher ordinances" could be fully understood, and before their administration in the temple could begin. Learn why Wilford believed that if revelation had ceased with Joseph Smith's death, the mission of Elijah would have failed. Through Wilford's own words--as preserved in his letters, discourses, and journals--find out what led him to seek additional revelation, make changes to some ordinances, and suspend or discontinue others. What did Wilford announce in 1894 that rewrote the nature of temple work? The temple ordinances were central to Wilford Woodruff's faith in the restored Church. Are they still important today?

Book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days

Download or read book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days written by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 1683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1820, a young farm boy in search of truth has a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ. Three years later, an angel guides him to an ancient record buried in a hill near his home. With God’s help, he translates the record and organizes the Savior’s church in the latter days. Soon others join him, accepting the invitation to become Saints through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. But opposition and violence follow those who defy old traditions to embrace restored truths. The women and men who join the church must choose whether or not they will stay true to their covenants, establish Zion, and proclaim the gospel to a troubled world. The Standard of Truth is the first book in Saints, a new, four-volume narrative history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fast-paced, meticulously researched, Saints recounts true stories of Latter-day Saints across the globe and answers the Lord’s call to write history “for the good of the church, and for the rising generations” (Doctrine and Covenants 69:8).
