Book excerpt: Western fiction is the classic American genre. It is folklore. Looking for years at the great film products of Hollywood with respectful envy and fond admiration, I am aware that I will never be involved in making a movie. Liking literature, I decided to write this south Texas western to make up for this. Being a great fan of westerns, I wanted to create one of my own. This is a romance of a cowboy with a rancher's daughter. There are also small cow town people, Indians, a mysterious gang of bad men with a secret hideout, an illustrious Spanish padre, a stately elder Indian war chief, and many other colorful characters. The lore of the old west in is presented to add flavor to the scenery, speech, customs, time and place. The reader's entertainment was the goal of all of this.

Book Sun and Saddle Leather

Download or read book Sun and Saddle Leather written by Badger Clark and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1922 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rugged landscapes and hardy living of the Old West find vivid evocation in this superb anthology by the famed cowboy poet Charles Badger Clark. Many of the poems eloquently recall places famed for their role in old west life such as the rolling plains and farms host to great herds of livestock. Herding and driving cattle and other animals on horseback across the vast prairielands was the work of the cowboy; during evenings and breaks in the shade these men would sing songs about their daily life, the sights seen and tough jobs accomplished amid scenes of boundless nature. Charles Badger Clark was one of the most celebrated cowboy poets of his generation. Born in Iowa in 1883, from a young age he demonstrated a great knack for penning evocative verse. Much of his writing is treasured for depicting the slang and quirks of speech peculiar to the cowboys, offering readers authentic glimpses of a lifestyle lost to time. Decades after his death Clark was inducted into Oklahoma's revered Hall of Great Westerners for his contributions to the culture. This reprinting of Sun and Saddle Leather is based upon the expanded fifth edition, which dates to 1920.

Book United States Military Saddles 1812 1943

Download or read book United States Military Saddles 1812 1943 written by and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1988-09-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large part of American history was written from the seat of a military saddle. While the United States Army used horse-mounted fighting men from the very beginning, it was in the nineteenth century - from the decade before the Mexican War through the Indian wars - that the dashing cavalry units captured the American imagination. The horse solders remained part of the army until 1943, when the military converted them to mechanized forces. Even so, West Point did not tear down its stables and abandon its riding-proficiency requirement until 1947. The long retention of the cavalry was due to affection for the memory of the glorious role of the cavalry in American military history.
