Book excerpt: I was voted "Least Likely to Succeed" by my high school. When my daughters and son heard about this, they were angry. But I explained that this prediction, albeit mean, was what motivated me to disprove my school's expectations. I certainly would not recommend imposing this negative prediction on students to motivate them. I understood that not everyone would use it as a challenge as I did and the impact could be very damaging. Back then, there wasn't as much focus on positive reinforcement and self-esteem. In those times, everyone had to have a very thick skin. Sensitivity could cost you your life, as keeping your emotions in check was critical to coexist with White America as an ADOS (American Descendant of Slavery) in the Jim Crow south. I consider it a badge of honor that not only have I been successful in life both personally and professionally but that I made it against all odds despite being grossly underestimated by my educators. Success is always sweeter for the underdog.

In this study, he demonstrates that ancient Israelite fathers were in fact free to choose their primary heirs. The Bible's propensity for younger offspring, Greenspahn shows, reflects neither a legally mandated norm nor a protest against the prevailing custom, but rather conforms to a widespread folk motif, evoking innocence, vulnerability, and destiny. Within the biblical context, this theme heightens God's role in supporting ostensibly unlikely heroes. Book excerpt: While coups drive a majority of regime changes and are responsible for the overthrow of many democratic governments, there has been very little empirical work on the subject. Seizing Power develops a new theory of coup dynamics and outcomes, drawing on 300 hours of interviews with coup participants and an original dataset of 471 coup attempts worldwide from 1950 to 2000. Naunihal Singh delivers a concise and empirical evaluation, arguing that understanding the dynamics of military factions is essential to predicting the success or failure of coups. Singh draws on an aspect of game theory known as a coordination game to explain coup dynamics. He finds a strong correlation between successful coups and the ability of military actors to project control and the inevitability of success. Examining Ghana’s multiple coups and the 1991 coup attempt in the USSR, Singh shows how military actors project an image of impending victory that is often more powerful than the reality on the ground. In addition, Singh also identifies three distinct types of coup dynamics, each with a different probability of success, based on where within the organization each coup originated: coups from top military officers, coups from the middle ranks, and mutinous coups from low-level soldiers.
