Book Learning with Trade Unions

Download or read book Learning with Trade Unions written by Moira Calveley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection provides an understanding of the range of learning that is enabled by trade unions, and the agendas around that learning. It comes at an important time as, in the UK, recent years have seen significant new opportunities for unions' involvement in the government's learning and skills policy. At the same time, trade unions have had to cope with declining membership and changing employment patterns, and thus have a keen interest in defining their role in contemporary employment relations and in pursuing strategies for union renewal. Therefore, in order to explore these dynamics, a strong feature of the book is its drawing together of informed, research-based contributions from the fields of training, skills and education, and of industrial relations. International and historical perspectives are included in order to better understand the contemporary issues. There are important conclusions for policy-makers, practitioners and researchers.

Book Understanding European Trade Unionism

Download or read book Understanding European Trade Unionism written by Richard Hyman and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2001-05-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `As one would expect, this is a well-crafted, literate and absorbing account of European trade union development. Established scholars and advanced students will enjoy the discussion of theory and cases′ - The Journal of Industrial Relations `[A] detailed and fascinating history of trade unions in the three countries [Britain, Germany, Italy]... considers how the unions could recover from the intense disarray of recent years′ - Labour Research `Everyone concerned over the construction of a truly social Europe will learn much from this thoughtful and probing study′ - Professor Colin Crouch, Istituto Universitario Europeo In this comprehensive overview of trade unionism in Europe and beyond, Richard Hyman offers a fresh perspective on trade union identity, ideology and strategy. He shows how the varied forms and impact of different national movements reflect historical choices on whether to emphasize a role as market bargainers, mobilizers of class opposition or partners in social integration. The book demonstrates how these inherited traditions can serve as both resources and constraints in responding to the challenges which confront trade unions in today′s working world.

Book Partnerships for Learning

Download or read book Partnerships for Learning written by John Payne and published by . This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on trade unions in Britain as negotiators for and providers of education and training, either alone or in partnership with employers and educational institutions. Section 1 introduces the report's aims. Section 2 gives an overview of union involvement in education and training. It also introduces the tensions within current union approaches to education and training that reflect uncertainties in both workplace education and training and in plans for the University for Industry (UfI) initiative. Section 3 explains the rationale behind UfI, takes an inclusive view of UfI, summarizes the contents of the UfI prospectus, and explains how information and technologies can encourage and inhibit participation in lifelong learning. Section 4 looks at recent experiences of the Trades Union Congress and individual unions in negotiating for skills development in the workplace. It suggests how these can form a springboard from which unions can inform, influence, and contribute to the development of UfI. The section considers the following: different aspects of the skills agenda; motivation, guidance, and learning; negotiating for learning in the context of changing working practices; and priorities for trade unions. Section 5 looks at unions as providers of lifelong learning opportunities. Section 6 develops proposals for specific trade union roles within the UfI concept. Appendixes contain 18 references and resources and a glossary. (YLB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade union education is in the doldrums. It generally lacks modern ways of teaching and is full of outdated content and avoids history, economics and politics. This book demonstrates clearly that what is delivered in trade union education, and how it is delivered, have to be reformed and modernised. It successfully shows also how all trade unionists all over the world are educators in one way or another. Chapters cover the history, context and challenges in trade union education, the power of popular education techniques, trade union activism, community and social movements, practical examples of transformative new work and learning tips, learning materials and all those areas relevant to delivering impactful education.
