Book You Look Like a Thing and I Love You

Download or read book You Look Like a Thing and I Love You written by Janelle Shane and published by Voracious. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As heard on NPR's "Science Friday," discover the book recommended by Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Daniel Pink, and Adam Grant: an "accessible, informative, and hilarious" introduction to the weird and wonderful world of artificial intelligence (Ryan North). "You look like a thing and I love you" is one of the best pickup lines ever . . . according to an artificial intelligence trained by scientist Janelle Shane, creator of the popular blog AI Weirdness. She creates silly AIs that learn how to name paint colors, create the best recipes, and even flirt (badly) with humans—all to understand the technology that governs so much of our daily lives. We rely on AI every day for recommendations, for translations, and to put cat ears on our selfie videos. We also trust AI with matters of life and death, on the road and in our hospitals. But how smart is AI really... and how does it solve problems, understand humans, and even drive self-driving cars? Shane delivers the answers to every AI question you've ever asked, and some you definitely haven't. Like, how can a computer design the perfect sandwich? What does robot-generated Harry Potter fan-fiction look like? And is the world's best Halloween costume really "Vampire Hog Bride"? In this smart, often hilarious introduction to the most interesting science of our time, Shane shows how these programs learn, fail, and adapt—and how they reflect the best and worst of humanity. You Look Like a Thing and I Love You is the perfect book for anyone curious about what the robots in our lives are thinking. "I can't think of a better way to learn about artificial intelligence, and I've never had so much fun along the way." —Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals

Book Handbook of International Research in Mathematics Education

Download or read book Handbook of International Research in Mathematics Education written by Lyn D. English and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This state-of-the-art Handbook brings together important mathematics education research that makes a difference in both theory and practice--research that: anticipates problems and needed knowledge before they become impediments to progress; interprets future-oriented problems into researchable issues; presents the implications of research and theory development in forms that are useful to practitioners and policymakers; and facilitates the development of research communities to focus on neglected priorities or strategic opportunities. The volume represents a genuine attempt by contributors from around the world to advance the discipline, rather than simply review what has been done and what exists. The Handbook was developed in response to a number of major global catalysts for change, including the impact of national and international mathematics comparative assessment studies; the social, cultural, economic, and political influences on mathematics education and research; the influence of progressively sophisticated and available technology; and the increasing globalization of mathematics education and research. From these catalysts have emerged specific priority themes and issues for mathematics education research in the 21st century. Three key themes were identified for attention in this volume: life-long democratic access to powerful mathematical ideas; advances in research methodologies; and influences of advanced technologies. Each of these themes is examined in terms of learners, teachers, and learning contexts, with theory development as an important component of all these aspects. Dynamic and forward looking, the Handbook of International Research in Mathematics Education is distinguished by its focus on new and emerging theoretical models, perspectives, and research methodologies; its uniformly high standard of scholarship; and its emphasis on the international nature of mathematics education research. It is an essential volume for all researchers, professionals, and students interested in mathematics education research in particular and, more generally, in international developments and future directions in the broad field of educational research.

This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your child interested in sci-fi, robots, or video games? Is your kid fascinated by smart home assistants and the prospect of self-driving cars? Time to turn that enthusiasm into action and engage with the exciting world of artificial intelligence! AI+Me is a series designed to introduce the 5 Big Ideas of Artificial Intelligence to young learners. Students take a deep dive into the Five Big Ideas of AI (Perception, Representation and Reasoning, Learning, Natural Interaction, and Societal Impact). This is the first book in the AI+Me series focused on Perception. The series is recommended for K-2 students. Why should children be educated about AI? Learning AI opens up a world of opportunities. As the fastest growing area of computer science, AI will become the most important change force when our children grow up so it is critical they learn about it early. AI is fun! The field of AI started with scientists making computers learn to play games. AI is an incredibly fun way to introduce kids to programming and pique their interest in advanced topics like deep learning. Lastly, a topic like AI naturally opens up discussions about our humanity. In our curriculum, we dig deep into questions like “does AI positively or negatively impact society?” In doing so we aim to develop critical thinking skills and encourage students to reflect deeply. Benefits of AI education: - Gets children interested in #STEM education - Improves their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills - Builds their understanding of the tech tools that’ll shape their future - Starts important conversations about the future of humanity What are educators saying: “I really love these books. I think they are absolutely beautiful and very visually engaging ways for students to learn about artificial intelligence. I like how they progress through the topic and terms related to artificial intelligence and help students to attach meaning to what they are learning by the different examples and step-by-step ways that students build their understanding through the book.” - Rachelle Dene Poth, Author of In Other Words, Unconventional, The Future is Now, and Chart a New Course. What are parents saying: “My 1st grader loves this book. She already is really interested in computers, but this book got her thinking about how we actually tell emotions. She started using her camera on her computer to record different expressions.” “My son learned ReadyAI courses before. I let his friend read AI+Me big idea 1. Surprisingly, both of them finished reading the book, with a lot of interest! I Will recommend this book for elementary school students.” “I have been looking for fun ways to introduce AI to my kid, and this definitely nailed it.”

Book The Role of Communication in Learning To Model

Download or read book The Role of Communication in Learning To Model written by Paul Brna and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a number of experts from various disciplines take a look at three different strands in learning to model. They examine the activity of modeling from disparate theoretical standpoints, taking into account the individual situation of the individuals involved. The chapters seek to bridge the modeling of communication and the modeling of particular scientific domains. In so doing, they seek to throw light on the educational communication that goes on in conceptual learning. Taken together, the chapters brought together in this volume illustrate the diversity and vivacity of research on a relatively neglected, yet crucially important aspect of education across disciplines: learning to model. A common thread across the research presented is the view that communication and interaction, as fundamental to most educational practices and as a repository of conceptual understanding and a learning mechanism in itself, is intimately linked to elaborating meaningful, coherent, and valid representations of the world. The editors hope this volume will contribute to both the fundamental research in its field and ultimately provide results that can be of practical value in designing new situations for teaching and learning modeling, particularly those involving computers.

Book Artificial Unintelligence

Download or read book Artificial Unintelligence written by Meredith Broussard and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to understanding the inner workings and outer limits of technology and why we should never assume that computers always get it right. In Artificial Unintelligence, Meredith Broussard argues that our collective enthusiasm for applying computer technology to every aspect of life has resulted in a tremendous amount of poorly designed systems. We are so eager to do everything digitally—hiring, driving, paying bills, even choosing romantic partners—that we have stopped demanding that our technology actually work. Broussard, a software developer and journalist, reminds us that there are fundamental limits to what we can (and should) do with technology. With this book, she offers a guide to understanding the inner workings and outer limits of technology—and issues a warning that we should never assume that computers always get things right. Making a case against technochauvinism—the belief that technology is always the solution—Broussard argues that it's just not true that social problems would inevitably retreat before a digitally enabled Utopia. To prove her point, she undertakes a series of adventures in computer programming. She goes for an alarming ride in a driverless car, concluding “the cyborg future is not coming any time soon”; uses artificial intelligence to investigate why students can't pass standardized tests; deploys machine learning to predict which passengers survived the Titanic disaster; and attempts to repair the U.S. campaign finance system by building AI software. If we understand the limits of what we can do with technology, Broussard tells us, we can make better choices about what we should do with it to make the world better for everyone.

Book excerpt: Harmless artificial life forms are on the loose on the Internet. Computer viruses and even robots are now able to evolve like their biological counterparts. Telecommunications companies are sending small packets of software to go forth and multiply to cope with ever-increasing telephone traffic. Protein-based computers are on the agenda, and a team in Japan is building an organic brain as clever as a kitten. Welcome to the startling world of Artificial Life. Artificial Life scientists are taking inanimate materials such as computer software and robots and making them behave just like living organisms. In the process they are discovering much about what drives evolution and just what it means to say that something is alive. Virtual Organisms traces the origins of this field from the days when it was practiced by a few maverick scientists to the present and the current boom in Alife research. Leading technology correspondent Mark Ward presents a fascinating survey of current ideas about the origins of life and the engines of evolution. Through interviews with leading developers of Artificial Life, and through his own compelling research, Ward shows how the convergence of technology with biology has enormous implications. In an accessible, entertaining manner, Virtual Organisms reveals an unexplored avenue in predicting the future of Artificial Life, and whether new forms of Alife may be evolving beyond their designer's control.

Book Advances in Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Download or read book Advances in Intelligent Tutoring Systems written by Roger Nkambou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May the Forcing Functions be with You: The Stimulating World of AIED and ITS Research It is my pleasure to write the foreword for Advances in Intelligent Tutoring S- tems. This collection, with contributions from leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence in education (AIED), constitutes an overview of the many challenging research problems that must be solved in order to build a truly intel- gent tutoring system (ITS). The book not only describes some of the approaches and techniques that have been explored to meet these challenges, but also some of the systems that have actually been built and deployed in this effort. As discussed in the Introduction (Chapter 1), the terms “AIED” and “ITS” are often used int- changeably, and there is a large overlap in the researchers devoted to exploring this common field. In this foreword, I will use the term “AIED” to refer to the - search area, and the term “ITS” to refer to the particular kind of system that AIED researchers build. It has often been said that AIED is “AI-complete” in that to produce a tutoring system as sophisticated and effective as a human tutor requires solving the entire gamut of artificial intelligence research (AI) problems.
