Book excerpt: A style is any pattern we see in a person's way of accomplishing a particular type of task. The "task" of interest in the present context is education-learning and remembering in school and transferring what is learned to the world outside of school. Teachers are expressing some sort of awareness of style when they observe a particular action taken by a particular student and then say something like: "This doesn't surprise me! That's just the way he is. " Observation of a single action cannot reveal a style. One's impres sion of a person's style is abstracted from multiple experiences of the person under similar circumstances. In education, if we understand the styles of individual students, we can often anticipate their perceptions and subsequent behaviors, anticipate their misunderstandings, take ad vantage of their strengths, and avoid (or correct) their weaknesses. These are some of the goals of the present text. In the first chapter, I present an overview of the terminology and research methods used by various authors of the text. Although they differ a bit with regard to meanings ascribed to certain terms or with regard to conclusions drawn from certain types of data, there is none theless considerable agreement, especially when one realizes that they represent three different continents and five different nationalities.

Book excerpt: This monograph reviews several approaches for describing learning styles and the instructional implications of an emphasis on learning styles for teachers. Several reasons for the importance of understanding individual learning styles are provided; such understanding leads to: (1) reduction of teacher and student frustration; (2) higher student achievement and an improved self-concept; (3) accommodation of a variety of learners in a classroom; (4) the versatility that is crucial to learning; and (5) improved communication with administrators, parents, counselors, and other staff. Cognitive, affective, and physiological learning styles are considered. Approaches for describing cognitive styles include brain theories, conceptual tempo, field dependence/field independence, mind styles, modalities, and multiple intelligences. Approaches for describing affective styles include conceptual systems theory and psychological types. Finally, approaches for describing physiological styles revolve around elements of learning styles which have been classified into four kinds of stimuli: environmental, emotional, sociological, and physical. Six approaches for incorporating instruction that takes learning styles into account in the classroom are provided. They are: (1) pedagogical intelligence; (2) Carol Hall's Living Classroom; (3) whole language; (4) Foxfire activities; (5) the 4MAT System; and (6) the DICSIE (Describe, Interact, Control, Select, Instruct, Evaluate) Model. It is concluded that teachers pass through several stages in their understanding of children's learning styles, and it is emphasized that administrative support, staff development, peer coaching, parent education, and personal determination and commitment are crucial in a positive learning styles classroom. There are many different theories and models of learning styles with varying dimensions and variables (Evans & Graff, 2008). They focus on different aspects of cognitive processes, skills, sensory modalities, the process of learning, and thinking styles. Theories of learning styles assume that anyone can learn, albeit in different ways and on different levels. In this book, Chapter One sets out to explore research and outcomes into learning styles, which refer to the broadest range of preferred modes and environment for learning. Chapter Two identifies, describes, and examines the need for structure among teachers and students, as well as to understand students perceptions of this need. Chapter Three analyses the way students explain their academic results, by ordering six factors (effort, luck, knowledge bases or previous necessary knowledge, abilities, studying methods, and teacher) according to their degree of importance. Chapter Four combines knowledge from pedagogy and recommendation systems, and analyzes how combining four different learning style models (cognitive styles, epistemic styles, hemispheric styles, and perceiving styles) influences the choosing of preferred types of multimedia materials. Chapter Five investigates whether learning using clicker technology with learning styles encourages academic performance and increases pass rate in mathematics. Chapter Six reanalyzes previous research on learning styles in the Scandinavian context in relation to international research.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to: (1) determine the cognitive abilities of students enrolled in occupational Home Economics courses; and, (2) relate cognitive abilities to selected students characteristics as age, gender, GPA, and Learning Style. The population for the study was the Home Economics students enrolled in occupational courses in San Juan and Bayamon Regions, Puerto Rico (N = 191). The response rate was 71% (n = 135). Of the 135 students, 103 were females, and 32 were males. The ages ranges from 15 to 25 years old and the students were from ninth to twelfth grade. The study was descriptive and correlational. Three instruments were used to measure the dependent variable cognitive abilities and the independent variables age, gender, GPA, and learning style. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, simultaneous multiple regression was used to explain variance in the dependent variable through a linear combination of the independent variables. Descriptors recommended by Davis (1971) were used. The major findings of the study were: (1) Home Economics students lack application and critical thinking abilities skills; (2) Home Economics students tend to be field dependent learners; (3) there was a negligible relationship between learning style and gender; and, (4) there was a low positive relationship between learning styles and the academic achievement of the students. The major recommendations for practice were: (1) reevaluate the curriculum of the Home Economics program to include experiences in the problem solving approach to enhance the higher order thinking capabilities of learners; (2) teachers must become knowledgeable about learning styles of students; (3) teachers must use a variety of teaching methods and strategies to reach every student in the classroom; and, (4) in-service training must be developed to help teachers identify teaching methods and strategies that fulfill the weakest areas and strengthen areas related to cognitive abilities and learning styles of students. Recommendation for further research included: (1) replication of this study with a larger sample of Home Economics students; (2) replication of this study with other vocational programs; (3) the learning styles of students and the relationship with performance in the occupation; and, (4) the effects of using problem solving approach on cognitive abilities of students.
