Even when we do not see them, we depend on them to build our computers, mobile phones, cars and more. They are also been used for organizing stocks in warehouses. And, with the growth of autonomous cars, we see them driving autonomously on highways and cities. Another area of growth is social robotics. We can see a lot of studies such as robots helping children with autism. Other robots are being used to receive people in hotels or to interact with people in shopping centers. In the latter examples, robots need to understand people behavior. In addition, in the case of mobile robots, they need to know how to navigate in human environments. In the context of human environments, this thesis explores socially acceptable navigation of robots towards people. To give an example, when a robot approaches one person, the robot shall by no means treat people as an obstacle because the robot get really close to the human and interfere with her personal space. The human is an entity that needs to be considered based on social norms that we (humans) use on a daily basis. In a first time, we explore how a robot can approach one person. A person is an entity that can be bothered if someone or something approaches invading her personal space. The person also will feel distressed when she is approached from behind. These social norms have to be respected by the robot. For this reason, we decided to model the behavior of the robot through learning algorithms. We manually approach a robot to a person several times and the robot learns how to reproduce this behavior. In a second time, we present how a robot can understand what is a group of people. We, humans, have the ability to do this intuitively. However, for a robot, a mathematical model is essential. Lastly, we address how a robot can approach a group of people. We use exemplary demonstrations to teach this behavior to the robot. We evaluate then the robot's movements by for example, observing if the robot invades people's personal space during the trajectory.

The field of LfD has grown into an extensive body of literature over the past 30 years, with a wide variety of approaches for encoding human demonstrations and modeling skills and tasks. Additionally, we have recently seen a focus on gathering data from non-expert human teachers (i.e., domain experts but not robotics experts). In this book, we provide an introduction to the field with a focus on the unique technical challenges associated with designing robots that learn from naive human teachers. We begin, in the introduction, with a unification of the various terminology seen in the literature as well as an outline of the design choices one has in designing an LfD system. Chapter 2 gives a brief survey of the psychology literature that provides insights from human social learning that are relevant to designing robotic social learners. Chapter 3 walks through an LfD interaction, surveying the design choices one makes and state of the art approaches in prior work. First, is the choice of input, how the human teacher interacts with the robot to provide demonstrations. Next, is the choice of modeling technique. Currently, there is a dichotomy in the field between approaches that model low-level motor skills and those that model high-level tasks composed of primitive actions. We devote a chapter to each of these. Chapter 7 is devoted to interactive and active learning approaches that allow the robot to refine an existing task model. And finally, Chapter 8 provides best practices for evaluation of LfD systems, with a focus on how to approach experiments with human subjects in this domain.

Book excerpt: As robots transition from industrial and research settings into everyday human environments, robots must be able to (1) learn from humans while benefiting from the full range of the humans' knowledge and (2) learn to interact with humans in safe, intuitive, and social ways. This thesis describes a series of compelling robot behaviors, where human perception and interaction are foregrounded in a variety of tasks. Supervised learning is incorporated in three projects to improve robots' capabilities in dynamic, changing environments. In the first project, robots learned a door opening task from human teleoperators. In the process of data collection, many failure modes would occur, such as the human teacher using the robot to apply too much force to the door handle or experiencing uncertainty about when the robot was contacting the door. In order to improve this, we wrote software to map the robot's force-torque sensor data to real-time haptic feedback for the human demonstrator. We found that when haptic feedback was provided to the human during the data collection process, performance improved for both human data collection (efficiency of learning from demonstration teacher examples) and autonomous robot door opening (successful deployment of the learned policy on the robot). In the second project, robots learned to navigate in response to human gestures by using imitation learning paired with model predictive control. Humans and the environment were observed through a series of images, which were fed to a neural network that outputted navigation points. These navigation points were fed to a model predictive control algorithm. This was a novel combination of a high-level neural network with a low-level navigation planner. We observed that trained policies correctly responded to human gestures in the majority of cases during different gesture scenarios. Thus, visual imitation learning paired with model predictive control effectively resulted in gesture-aware navigation. In the third project, robots' movement generated music in real time through software. Through two experiments, we showed that augmenting a robot with motion-generated music increased robot likeability and perceived intelligence. In the fourth project, robots learned to move in groups based on a choreographer's preferences while running the music generation software from the third project. In an experiment for the fourth project, we demonstrated that our multi-robot flocking system with gesture and musical accompaniment effectively engaged and enthralled humans. We trained a model to select between different navigation modes, based on how a human choreographer made selections. We observed that humans' perceptions of the robots and their overall experience are not significantly altered by the method (human choreographer selection, model prediction, or a control condition) in which the robots' behaviors were modulated. The compelling robot behaviors described in this thesis elucidate how teaching interfaces and interactions with robots in everyday settings can be appealing, effective, and delightful.

Book excerpt: Powerful and economic sensors such as high definition cameras and corresponding recognition software have become readily available, e.g. for face and motion recognition. However, designing user interfaces for robots, phones and computers that facilitate a seamless, intuitive, and apparently effortless communication as between humans is still highly challenging. This has shifted the focus from developing ever faster and higher resolution sensors to interpreting available sensor data for understanding social signals and recognising users' intentions. Psychologists, Ethnologists, Linguists and Sociologists have investigated social behaviour in human-human interaction. But their findings are rarely applied in the human-robot interaction domain. Instead, robot designers tend to rely on either proof-of-concept or machine learning based methods. In proving the concept, developers effectively demonstrate that users are able to adapt to robots deployed in the public space. Typically, an initial period of collecting human-robot interaction data is used for identifying frequently occurring problems. These are then addressed by adjusting the interaction policies on the basis of the collected data. However, the updated policies are strongly biased by the initial design of the robot and might not reflect natural, spontaneous user behaviour. In the machine learning approach, learning algorithms are used for finding a mapping between the sensor data space and a hypothesised or estimated set of intentions. However, this brute-force approach ignores the possibility that some signals or modalities are superfluous or even disruptive in intention recognition. Furthermore, this method is very sensitive to peculiarities of the training data. In sum, both methods cannot reliably support natural interaction as they crucially depend on an accurate model of human intention recognition. Therefore, approaches to social robotics from engineers and computer scientists urgently have to be informed by studies of intention recognition in natural human-human communication. Combining the investigation of natural human behaviour and the design of computer and robot interfaces can significantly improve the usability of modern technology. For example, robots will be easier to use by a broad public if they can interpret the social signals that users spontaneously produce for conveying their intentions anyway. By correctly identifying and even anticipating the user's intention, the user will perceive that the system truly understands her/his needs. Vice versa, if a robot produces socially appropriate signals, it will be easier for its users to understand the robot's intentions. Furthermore, studying natural behaviour as a basis for controlling robots and other devices results in greater robustness, responsiveness and approachability. Thus, we welcome submissions that (a) investigate how relevant social signals can be identified in human behaviour, (b) investigate the meaning of social signals in a specific context or task, (c) identify the minimal set of intentions for describing a context or task, (d) demonstrate how insights from the analysis of social behaviour can improve a robot's capabilities, or (e) demonstrate how a robot can make itself more understandable to the user by producing more human-like social signals.
