Book excerpt: Behavioral economics is a field of study aimed at understanding why people make economically irrational decisions. Rational choice theory holds that consumers make choices that maximize their utility. Behavioral economics combines elements of economics and psychology to understand how and why people behave the way they do in the real world. It differs from neoclassical economics, which assumes that most people have well-defined preferences and make well-informed, self-interested decisions based on those preferences. Behavioral economics (BE) uses psychological experimentation to develop theories about human decision making and has identified a range of biases as a result of the way people think and feel. BE is trying to change the way economists think about people's perceptions of value and expressed preferences. Download or read book The Economics of Artificial Intelligence written by Ajay Agrawal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely investigation of the potential economic effects, both realized and unrealized, of artificial intelligence within the United States healthcare system. In sweeping conversations about the impact of artificial intelligence on many sectors of the economy, healthcare has received relatively little attention. Yet it seems unlikely that an industry that represents nearly one-fifth of the economy could escape the efficiency and cost-driven disruptions of AI. The Economics of Artificial Intelligence: Health Care Challenges brings together contributions from health economists, physicians, philosophers, and scholars in law, public health, and machine learning to identify the primary barriers to entry of AI in the healthcare sector. Across original papers and in wide-ranging responses, the contributors analyze barriers of four types: incentives, management, data availability, and regulation. They also suggest that AI has the potential to improve outcomes and lower costs. Understanding both the benefits of and barriers to AI adoption is essential for designing policies that will affect the evolution of the healthcare system.

Download or read book Organizational Learning from Performance Feedback written by Henrich R. Greve and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisiting Cyert and March s classic 1963 Behavioral Theory of the Firm , Henrich Greve offers an intriguing analysis of how firms evolve in response to feedback about their own performance. Based on ideas from organizational theory, social psychology, and economics, he explains how managers set goals, evaluate performance, and determine strategic changes. Drawing on a range of recent studies, including the author s own analysis of the Japanese shipbuilding industry, he reports on how theory fits current evidence on organizational change of risk-taking, research and development expenses, innovativeness, investment in assets, and in market strategy. The findings suggest that high-performing organizations quickly reduce their rates of change, but low-performing organizations only slowly increase those rates. Analysis of performance feedback is an important new direction for research and this book provides valuable insights in how organizational learning interacts with other influences on organizational behaviour such as competitive rivalry and institutional influences.

Rotter emphasized that the psychological situation is an extremely important determinant of sharp contrast to those positions that once the basic elements of personality are identified, reliable prediction follows (rotter et al, 1972, p. Experiences with one particular situation, particularly those involving social interaction with other people. Are often generalized to other, similar situations. Slt calls this generalized expectancies, which Rotter terms the basis for socialattitudes. The distinction between specific and generalized expectancies is an important one in slt. Specific expectancies result from one's previous experiences with reinforcement in the same situation. This expectancy is subject to change and manipulation. Given a sufficient number of replications, changes in specific situational expectancies can lead to changes in generalized expectancies, which are part of one's personality. A major role of socialization is the development of generalized expectancies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Organizational Learning

Download or read book Organizational Learning written by Linda Argote and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some organizations learn at faster rates than others? Why do organizations "forget"? Could productivity gains acquired in one part of an organization be transferred to another? These are among the questions addressed in Organizational Learning: Creating, Retaining and Transferring Knowledge. Since its original publication in 1999, this book has set the standard for research and analysis in the field. This fully updated and expanded edition showcases the most current research and insights, featuring a new chapter that provides a theoretical framework for analyzing organizational learning and presents evidence about how the organizational context affects learning processes and outcomes. Drawing from a wide array of studies across the spectrum of management, economics, sociology, and psychology, Organizational Learning explores the dynamics of learning curves in organizations, with particular emphasis on how individuals and groups generate, share, reinforce, and sometimes forget knowledge. With an increased emphasis on service organizations, including healthcare, Linda Argote demonstrates that organizations vary dramatically in the rates at which they learn—with profound implications for productivity, performance, and managerial and strategic decision making.
