Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 3, 1979, in the Morningside neighborhood of Greensboro, North Carolina, a caravan of Ku Klux Klan and Nazi Party members arrived on the scene of an anti-Klan protest. After a scuffle, some of the Klan and Nazis opened fire on the mostly unarmed, racially mixed gathering of political activists, labor organizers, and children. While news cameras filmed, five protesters were killed and ten were wounded. Police officers were notably absent at the time of the attack. State and federal criminal trials resulted in acquittals of the shooters by all-white juries. The City of Greensboro consistently denied any responsibility for the events. In 2001, Greensboro took its first groundbreaking steps toward confronting the past through an independent Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Inspired by South Africa's efforts to tackle injustice and seek reconciliation on a larger scale, Greensboro explicitly and controversially connected its experience to other contexts of injustice and launched a novel undertaking for a U.S. community. Learning from Greensboro provides an insider's look at the truth and reconciliation process, including how it worked, the challenges it faced, and the local context in which it existed. The book offers valuable practical insights into the process of truth-telling and gives testimony to the possibility that denial, indifference, and hidden histories can be made to yield to a deeper and lasting justice.

It suggests that we need to understand more about the distinctiveness of teaching and learning in post-compulsory education, and what it is that matters about the design of its spaces. Starting from contemporary educational and architectural theories, it suggests alternative conceptual frameworks and methods that can help map the social and spatial practices of education in universities and colleges; so as to enhance the architecture of post-compulsory education.

Book excerpt: Almost all managers regard job experiences and the lessons they provide essential for their development as leaders. But not all of those managers are successful at learning those lessons. That difficulty is often related to a manager ’s relying too much on one preferred learning tactic—a tactic that might not be suited for gleaning the lessons of a particular job experience. By increasing the number of learning tactics and becoming a more versatile learner, managers can better position themselves to take advantage of the lessons that job experiences offer and contribute to their leadership development.

Book The Power of Paideia Schools

Download or read book The Power of Paideia Schools written by Terry Roberts and published by ASCD. This book was released on 1998 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1982 philosopher Mortimer Adler led a group of educators and scholars in publishing a trilogy of books on what they called "Paideia" educational reform. The first book, The Paideia Proposal, had a profound effect on most of the major reform efforts that followed, and Paideia principles--including the then radical notion that "all children can learn"--eventually permeated the educational dialogue. Merging the conservative idea of a classical education with progressive ideas about teaching and learning, Paideia educators strive to provide all children with a rigorous and meaningful education--one that respects cultural diversity while equipping students with the knowledge and skills required for full participation in a united, democratic society. Since 1988 the National Paideia Center (NPC) at The University of North Carolina has encouraged and supported a dramatic resurgence in Paideia education. In The Power of Paideia Schools: Defining Lives Through Learning, NPC Director Terry Roberts and his coauthors cite schools throughout the United States as they provide a blueprint for the Paideia school. Readers will learn about the "three-column" approach to instruction, the core curriculum, scheduling options, and meaningful assessment from the Paideia perspective. Combining thoughtful educational philosophy with real-world results, the authors offer a persuasive argument for a classical education that meets contemporary challenges.

Download or read book Slow Looking written by Shari Tishman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slow Looking provides a robust argument for the importance of slow looking in learning environments both general and specialized, formal and informal, and its connection to major concepts in teaching, learning, and knowledge. A museum-originated practice increasingly seen as holding wide educational benefits, slow looking contends that patient, immersive attention to content can produce active cognitive opportunities for meaning-making and critical thinking that may not be possible though high-speed means of information delivery. Addressing the multi-disciplinary applications of this purposeful behavioral practice, this book draws examples from the visual arts, literature, science, and everyday life, using original, real-world scenarios to illustrate the complexities and rewards of slow looking.

Download or read book Learning to Win written by Pamela Grundy and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century, high school and college athletics have grown into one of America's most beloved--and most controversial--institutions, inspiring great loyalty while sparking fierce disputes. In this richly detailed book, Pamela Grundy examines the many meanings that school sports took on in North Carolina, linking athletic programs at state universities, public high schools, women's colleges, and African American educational institutions to social and economic shifts that include the expansion of industry, the advent of woman suffrage, and the rise and fall of Jim Crow. Drawing heavily on oral history interviews, Grundy charts the many pleasures of athletics, from the simple joy of backyard basketball to the exhilaration of a state championship run. She also explores conflicts provoked by sports within the state--clashes over the growth of college athletics, the propriety of women's competition, and the connection between sports and racial integration, for example. Within this chronicle, familiar athletic narratives take on new meanings, moving beyond timeless stories of courage, fortitude, or failure to illuminate questions about race, manhood and womanhood, the purpose of education, the meaning of competition, and the structure of American society.
