This book was released on 2008 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper outlines proposals to improve the quality of alternative This white paper outlines proposals to improve the quality of alternative provision for young people who are permanently excluded from school or who are otherwise without a school place. Around 135,000 pupils a year, mostly of secondary age, spend some time in alternative provision. About one third are placed in pupil referral units, the rest in a range of places including in further education and the private and voluntary sectors. About half the children are excluded for bad or disruptive behaviour; the rest are in alternative provision for a variety of reasons. 75 per cent of pupils in pupil referral units have special educational needs, 91 per cent are aged 11-15, and 69 per cent are boys. Performance outcomes in GCSEs from alternative provision are very poor, though the data is limited. The strategy is based on core principles: starting with what works best for each person, taking account of needs and in consultation with parents and carers; securing a core educational entitlement for young people; better planning and commissioning of alternative provision; local authorities should be held accountable for outcomes; better professional support, accommodation and facilities; partnership working between alternative provision, other parts of the education sector and other agencies; learning from best practice and supporting innovation. A central aim is for schools to be able to get pupils back on track, and make more use of high quality alternative provisions as an early intervention for their pupils who are at risk of permanent exclusion. The term "Pupil Referral Unit" is considered outdated and unhelpful, and will be changed in the legislation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the potential of school dining halls as spaces of social learning through interactions between students and teachers. Schools, Food and Social Learning highlights the neglect of school dining halls in sociological research and the fact that so much can be gained from fostering interpersonal relations with other students and the school staff over meals. The book focuses primarily on social and life skills that students develop during lunch-hour meetings, modelling behaviors while eating and conversing in the school space known as the ‘restaurant’. With case studies based in the UK, the book takes a social constructivist approach to dealing with the tensions and challenges between the aims of the school – creating an eating space that promotes social values and encourages the development of social skills, and the activities of teachers and catering assistants of managing and providing food for many students daily. The book carries snippets of interviews with children, dining hall attendants, teachers, parents and the school leadership team, offering a new way of thinking about social learning for both scholars and students of Social Anthropology, Sociology, Social Policy, Food Policy, Education Studies and Childhood Studies.

This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Ethical Dilemmas in Educational Research is a valuable resource for both researchers and supervisors. Having myself sat on a university ethics committee, I appreciate not only the considerations needed when approving applications but also the controversy around what could be viewed as undue restrictions on research. The real-life and hypothetical dilemmas presented in this book should help guide researchers towards effective but ethically sensitive designs." Dr Katy Smart CPsychol AFBPsS, Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford, UK Ethical Dilemmas in Educational Research is an invaluable guide for educational researchers around the world, helping to develop best practices and make informed decisions. This book demonstrates how a careful balance must be struck between the needs of participants, increasing regulatory guidelines and the academic freedom of the educational researcher. The authors discuss an array of issues arising in the field of educational research, including: ethical dilemmas in action, issues of agency and privacy, and researcher reflexivity. With a foreword by Professor Ian Menter, this book goes beyond the guidelines and focuses on the specific dilemmas that educational researchers face, illustrated with real-life and inclusive examples. The book: ● Focuses on the resolution of ethical dilemmas in educational research, and not just the dilemmas themselves ● Highlights the role of committees and guidelines, with an emphasis on misunderstandings and common purposes ● Is written by academics from differing theoretical and methodological perspectives and disciplines across the spectrum of educational research ● Presents specific dilemmas encountered during research in the early years, schools and universities The authors use these ideas to build on the foundations of an ethical approach and find new ways of working together and learning from one another, to ensure best practice in the educational research field and forge a more united forward path. Carol Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology and Education Faculty Research Ethics Officer at Oxford Brookes University, UK. Mary Wild is Professor in Education and former Head of the School of Education at Oxford Brookes University, UK.

Book Student Voice Behaviour and Resistance in the Classroom Environment

Download or read book Student Voice Behaviour and Resistance in the Classroom Environment written by Thomas Ralph and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel volume investigates the motivations behind disruptive pupil behaviour and offers practical guidance through discussion of a novel theoretical framework that explores how students perceive schooling, uncovering what their behaviour can tell us about how to adjust the school environment. Drawing on cutting-edge research and internationally relevant themes, chapters argue that non-compliant behaviour by students is not mindlessly reactive but is purposeful – a means to make themselves heard. The book explores a dynamic understanding of the processes of placemaking and offers insights on how students create 'student-friendly' places by re-appropriating spaces within schools and why they might behave in certain ways. Arguing that the wider implications of a failure in educational policy is detrimental to student retainment and success, the book will ultimately have ramifications across disciplines and classroom contexts in improving student engagement. This book will be of interest to researchers, practitioners and policy makers working in the fields of the sociology of education, teaching and teacher education, educational change and reform more broadly. Those looking into behaviour management, youth studies, and education policy will also find this book of interest.
